What is literature? Literature, to me, is written work that demonstrates a certain level of artistic value. In literature, a reader will often find a plot, a theme, and a setting. The way a writer chooses to compose these three main characteristics makes each piece of literature stand out. A literary piece also is determined by its characteristic. Literature should be determined by those who study the subject matter. Thus alluding to the mindset of people who do not fully understand the power of literature.
Students most often ask how does the book 1984 by George Orwell relate to me or what’s the purpose of learning The Odyssey by Homer. Well, the answer is history. Literature is a reflection of society. A reader can learn a lot about the
Greek Gods are known for, helping and fighting others, but is that really true, and do we really know their stories? In the book “Theseus” by Bernard Evslin, Theseus is a young man that lives a boring life, until one day, a seagull told him that Poseidon was Theseus’s father, and he wanted to find him. Theseus overcomes various obstacles, he finally reaches Athen and finds his father king Aegeus. Later on Aegeus ask Theseus’s to go on an important journey. Meanwhile, another, epic poem is The Odyssey by Homer. After ten years of the Fall of Troy, Odysseus was disregarding to the gods, and the gods were flustered that they set Odysseus and his men off course to where the cyclops lived. But luckily, Odyssey trick the cyclops into being
The current return on sales ratio for the Department & Discount Retail Industry is 4.96%. The Department & Discount Retail also currently has a return on sales sector ratio of 9.26%. Both JcPenney and Target fell into the negatives for this ratio at the end of 2014. JcPenney credits the low ratio from the bad sales they had in 2014. A few of JcPenney’s goals are to boost sales in 2015 and close underperforming stores. Target credits the negative return on sales ratio in 2014 to stopping its operation out of Canada and the massive data breach that they had at the end of 2013. To get JcPenney and Target back to positive return on sales ratios they need to generate more sales while cutting costs. I think both stores are on track to fixing their
Knowledge is the best weapon that Americans possess today. Without the knowledge of why and how things occur; the world would end up like the book “Fahrenheit 451”. The world where the citizens blindly follow those who are in power. Knowledge gives the people the ability to process information and find the lessons behind it. To be able to remember, understand, and apply the lessons learned from the reading into real life situations. Also, to understand the connections that the authors made between the book and the society that he/she resides in or a society in the future. Literature classes are important and are needed in schools because it gives people the freedom to learn and write what they
The Odyssey and The Penelopiad’s storyline are both based off the same social context as Homer recorded the epic poem during Homeric society (when he was alive) however when the story was composed the literary context is completely different in comparison to Atwood, as Atwood wrote her novella - The Penelopiad, in the 21’st century and homer recorded the epic poem during 8th C BCE. The difference between each time period meant there were societal differences which had different impacts on each of the stories literary context. The odyssey is a historical epic poem that was verbally told by bards around ancient Greece and recorded by homer in 8thC BCE, following the dark ages. During this time there was no real sense of freedom or self expression and people were not very opinionated. This was because during this time, Homeric society was overruled by patriarchal views and a hierarchy within their time, meaning some people were seen as much less than others. In contrast to Margaret Atwood where her fictional Novella the Penelopiad was crafted in 2005, during a modern society where freedom of speech was more or less accepted than in Homeric society. The Odyssey has a major influence on Margaret Atwood’s novella the Penelopiad, as she based her opinions and perspective off the facts and historical content from the Odyssey. The Penelopiad’s central theme consists of the double standards that occurred against the women within the Odyssey such as the maids and Penelope. Margaret
Homer’s “The Odyssey” takes place ten years after the events in “The Iliad”, to which the Odyssey is an indirect sequel, and the fall of Troy; even though the story is believed to have been composed some time during the eight century B.C.E. it is estimated to be set sometime between 1300 and 1000 B.C.E. in Mycenaean Greece during the Bronze age. In this novel all Greek heroes have returned home after the fall of Troy, except for Odysseus who after a three year journey has been held captive by the goddess Calypso, who has fallen in love with him, on her island, Ogygia. After the ten years have passed Odysseus is presumed dead, his wife Penelope is courted, and his estate is auctioned off by the Suitors, the young men of Ithaca who attempt to win Penelope’s favor and hand in marriage.
I was born in China, and my mom and dad are American," Amy explained. In 2001, one out of every four internationally adopted children in the United States was born in China, the leading country for foreign adoptions. It's a far cry from a decade earlier, when China allowed just 61 adoptions to the United States. An adoption law in 1992 opened up the country, however -- a natural outgrowth of China's population-control policy that resulted in more children being born than the Chinese government allowed families to keep.
The Greeks define nobility as a person who would go and fight for their country, a person who has values of bravery, intelligence, strength and keen judgment. He must also be a person who the gods respect. In Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey, Odysseus is portrayed as noble according to mythology legend. The American Heritage dictionary defines noble as a man often of divine ancestry, a man who is endowed with great courage and strength who is celebrated for his bold exploits and favored by the gods. (American Heritage dictionary) Odysseus was a noble man if he was being described by the Greeks, but in today’s society there probably would be some debate as to whether or not he was truly noble. Although, Odysseus did possess some of these
Literature is important to allow readers to escape reality within the pages of a book, and also to preserve the past by reading about personal experiences and understanding the norms of different time periods. It is beneficial to provide a new world for the reader, but it shows our history and how it has changed over the years. Many fiction writers hint at real-world experiences or topics and it is up to the reader to interpret the theme of the literature. Authors write to preserve our past and to show a common theme as well as open the door to allow the reader to delve into the words on the page.
Women have held many different roles in society throughout human history. Since the beginning of time men have always been viewed as superior. In Homer’s Iliad, a perfect example of the suppressive role of women is shown. Women are treated as property and are used for the mere purpose of reproduction within the household. Paralyzed by their unfortunate circumstances, they were taken and given as if they were material belongings. In Homer's Iliad, women are seen and introduce as rewards to the male heroines and usually the greatest fighters. They are depicted as being inferior to men both physically and intellectually. Throughout the epic poem, women play an important role that symbolizes their relative significance and the impact they
The debate on whether the Elgin Marbles should stay in Britain or be returned to their original home in Greece has been going on for a few decades now. As a curator of a Turkish museum that is the home to many Greek art works, I believe that the art work in Britain should remain there for multiple reasons, the main one being that if the British decide to give the marbles back to the Greeks, would the Greeks decide that they want the art work that we have here in Turkey back?
The two epics The Odyssey, by Homer, and The Inferno, by Dante, both works have two different perspectives of the character Ulysses. The Odyssey is told from the ancient Greek perspective around 700BC, and The Inferno is told from a Christian point of view in 1300AD. Both epics are written nearly 2000 years apart from each other. What set apart the ideals of both epics are the Pagan warrior perspective in Homer’s epic and the Christian Europe perspective in Dante’s epic. The controversial topic is what makes Ulysses a hero in The Odyssey and what makes him one of the world’s greatest sinners in The Inferno?
Everyone uses phones. Whether it’s for texting, calling, searching the web or looking at social media, phones, computers, radios, and televisions are essential to modern life. Of course, it wasn’t always like that. This technology hasn’t existed until very recently in time. Since the start of humanity, our goals have been to evolve our ways of living. How far has this strive for intelligence reached? In the ancient story of Homer’s The Odyssey, the hero Odysseus travels from Troy to Ithica through an adventure of obstacles and strife. Since the setting takes place thousands of years ago, much of the technology is outdated and obsolete. The Odyssey’s technology is more underdeveloped than the accomplishments of modern times, showing humanity’s progress with transportation, communication, and weaponry.
When a text is first being dissected it is important to walk in to the situation prepared. To be prepared you must go into the situation equipped with your own interpretation as to what constitutes literature. The definition of literature isn’t very concise. Like art the definition of literature can vary from one individual to another and before studying these subjects the audience should establish their own definition so that they can look for themes and symbols in the piece. In my opinion I believe that literature should be defined as any fictitious work that implements symbols, and other literary devices, to convey different themes and messages below the surface of the text. With this interpretation of literature I think that its purpose is to give the audience insight into the lives of others and make statements about our society. When readers study literature in this manner they are able to view our society from an outside perspective and
The definition of literature has been discussed and argued over time and there is no precise answer to be given. Any reader or author can define literature as whatever they wish it to be defined as. This is more of an opinion of how one views certain pieces of work or writings and whether or not they feel that is actually literature or not. Literature is any type of creative writing such as fiction or poetry, for example. Literature is also any form of body of written works of language, which could be from the English era or even as far back as the Shakespearean or Elizabethan era. It is also work from a specific period or culture defining key elements or somehow relating to and/or expressing how it is exactly from that time. The
Literature is an autonomous verbal art, independent from the context. A novel is “a fictitious prose narrative of considerable length and complexity, portraying characters and
