Curiosity, acceptance, family, honor, idealism, independence, order, physical activity, power, romance, saving, social contract, eating, status, tranquility, vengeance. These are sixteen basic human desires, that Professor Steven Reiss claims are present in every human (Reiss). For some people to achieve these desires, they turn to fellow groups of people who share the same morals and values. Religion is an outlet for these people to come together and support one another in their belief systems. Religion comes with the concept of deity, a higher power, who some believe to be a God. God comes in many shapes and sizes in many different religions. In defining religion, it is necessary to explore the basic beliefs and interpretations of God in the numerous religions and sects of the world. The different denominations of Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, and Buddhism will be the main aspects of this paper in order to define religion. ted and have the same core values that stem from early religious texts such as the “Old Testament”. The origin of Islam started with a man named Muhammed who lived in the city Mecca, in what is now known as Saudi Arabia around 600 AD. Muhammed told his followers that in the year 610 AD, he went to the Mount Hira, prayed and the angel Gabriel, from the Old Testament appeared to him and instructed him in many different teachings of the new religion he was about to start. Muhammed then had his teachings written down and recorded by his followers because he himself could not write, in what is now known as the Quran. Although Muslims call their God, Allah, which is simply the name of God in the Arabic language, they believe he is the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
