English was born in Texas and grew up in Sandy Spring, Georgia. He went to Guilford College in North Carolina on a baseball scholarship, then he quit and went to the Culinary Institute of America. He graduated from the institute in 1982. He worked at a restaurant in New York called La Cote Basque under Jean-Jacques Rachou. Later he moved to Italy and worked at many restaurants there. When he was 25 he moved back to the United States. He started working at an Italian restaurant called Michela’s as an executive chef. He worked in that restaurant for three years before opening his own restaurant in 1989.

He was married once to his classmate at the institute her name was Olivia Disch English. They had three children together. He was engaged to Erica Wang but the wedding was called off. He has co-authored and authored many books. Some of the books names are, The Olives Table, The Figs Table, and The Olives Dessert Table with Sally Sampson. He has two main restaurants “Olives” and “Figs”.

Olives was his first restaurant the restaurant was a tribute to his then-wife, Oliva. The food was a mix between Italian cuisine and rustic mediterranean. The restaurant was named Best New Restaurant by Boston magazine. Figs is the name of two high end pizzerias it the Boston area. There is one in Beacon Hill Neighborhood and Charleston. His first one was James Beard Award for Rising Star Chef of the Year he earned that because he had amazing cuisine and culinary education. His second award was James Beard Award for Best Chef: Northeast he earned that award for being the best chef in the northwest. His third award was James Beard Foundation Award for Who's Who of Food and Beverage in America he earned this award because he had accomplished the most cadre of food and beverage professionals in the country.
