English was born in Texas and grew up in Sandy Spring, Georgia. He went to Guilford College in North Carolina on a baseball scholarship, then he quit and went to the Culinary Institute of America. He graduated from the institute in 1982. He worked at a restaurant in New York called La Cote Basque under Jean-Jacques Rachou. Later he moved to Italy and worked at many restaurants there. When he was 25 he moved back to the United States. He started working at an Italian restaurant called Michela’s as an executive chef. He worked in that restaurant for three years before opening his own restaurant in 1989.
He was married once to his classmate at the institute her name was Olivia Disch English. They had three children together. He was engaged to Erica Wang but the wedding was called off. He has co-authored and authored many books. Some of the books names are, The Olives Table, The Figs Table, and The Olives Dessert Table with Sally Sampson. He has two main restaurants “Olives” and “Figs”.
