Short Story Essay From a young age, society teaches people to always tell the truth, as lies can bring themselves, or other people harm. However, experience teaches people that telling lies is a lot easier than telling the truth, especially when those lies seem to be insignificant. The short stories, “Like the Sun” and “The Open Window” exemplify situations in which the truth is detrimental to others’ feelings, and a situation in which lying is damaging to one’s life. Although both telling the truth and telling lies can be harmful to one’s life or feelings to a certain degree, lying causes more damage than telling the truth. This lie permanently damages his life because he will now be too scared to even leave his house, since his fear of meeting new people is even greater. Had Vera been truthful to Framton about her aunt, he would have no reason to leave the house. This story is just one example of the subversive effects of lying, but it clearly shows how just one lie can change someone’s life for the worst, as Framton would be getting the crucial treatment he needs if Vera had not lied to him. In all situations, telling the truth is better than lying, even though it may be more difficult. For example, many people tell a copious amount of white lies every day, because it is either easier than telling the truth, or they want to spare other people’s feelings. In “Like the Sun”, Sekhar is aware of the amount of white lies people tell every day, and conducts an experiment to evaluate whether or not these white lies are necessary in everyday life. He challenges himself to go one whole day with only telling the absolute truth, and does not let anyone know of his plan. He believes that, “Truth...is like the sun...no human being can ever look it straight in the face without blinking or being dazed.” (Narayan 81), meaning that the truth is necessary, but sometimes hard for people to bear.
