The Organs And Function Of The Human Circulatory System

Decent Essays

The human body needs oxygen to sustain itself. The human respiratory system is a group of organs that take in oxygen and let out carbon dioxide. The main organ of the respiratory system is the lungs. Red blood cells collect the oxygen from the lungs and carry it to the parts of the body where it is needed.

The human respiratory system allows us to breath by air traveling down the oesophagus to the trachea which branches into the Bronchi then branches further into the smaller Bronchioles that End in the surfaces of the Lungs in Alveoli that Diffuse through thin membrane into the Circulatory System.

When humans breathe the diaphragm contracts and relaxes. The intercostal muscles between the ribs help to change the internal pressure by lifting and relaxing the ribcage in rhythm with the diaphragm.

Under normal resting conditions, the body maintains a quiet breathing rate and depth called eupnea. Autonomic chemoreceptors in the body monitor the partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood and send signals to the respiratory centers of the brain stem. The respiratory centers then alters the rate and depth of breathing to return the blood to its usual levels of gas partial pressures.

The lungs are filled with thousands of tubes branching smaller and smaller. The smallest segments are the air sacs, called alveoli. Each one has a fine mesh of capillaries. This is where the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place.
