The Other Wes Moore Essay “The Other Wes Moore:One Name, Two Fates” by Wes Moore is about two people with the same name, same hometown, same family situations, but very different fates. It follows both Wes’s through their childhood and adulthood. It shows the choices and uncontrollable factors that caused their paths to so drastically change. I believe that the main factors that caused this were the family and friends around them during their life. The main people who effected them were their fathers, their mothers, and their role models. Wes and Other Wes both did not grow up with a father, but while Wes’s father died, Other Wes’s father left him. During a dialogue between Wes and other Wes, Other Wes says “Your father wasn’t there because he couldn't be, my father wasn’t there because he chose to be.” (OWM 3) This quote shows the pain the Other Wes has about his father's absence. Wes’s father died early on during his life. Although this was a tragedy it left a good memory of his father. He can look up to him and feel wanted. On the other hand Other Wes was abandoned. The first thing that could have drastically changed his life is if his father had stayed with his family and had sobered up. This would be huge for other Wes because he would feel wanted, have a good male role model, and his mother would not have to work full time. This would mean she could watch over Other Wes Moore and influence him more directly. If Mary had taken more steps like Joy like sending Other Wes to a better school, it could have also drastically affected Other Wes’s life. There would still be a chance of Other Wes not embracing the opportunity like Wes at Riverdale, but it would still be more likely for him to end up
