In the 1940’s, Algeria was a country with rich history and was an imperialized country under France. Meursault came across many different characters throughout the novel, The Outsider by Albert Camus, due to Algeria’s abundant history. These characters ranged with different personalities, and ethnicities, but were these personalities associated with the ethnicities on purpose? In the novel, Meursault is also faced with the idea of the death penalty. Collectively, society accepts the idea of the death penalty due to their history. Here in, we shall see how Camus uses the novel The Outsider to portray Algerians sentiment towards the Arabs, the French and the death penalty in the 1940’s. Camus uses the book The Outsider to explain the Algerian-Arabic relations. Meursault had many encounters with Arabs, especially after meeting his new friend, Raymond. The passage chosen illustrates Meursault’s view during his time in prison for killing the Arab. In prison, one can see the shifts in Meursault’s character and the acceptance of this new lifestyle. Camus manipulates diction to indicate the changes in Meursault caused by time thinking of memories in prison and realization of his pointless life. “The Outsider” by H.P. Lovecraft tell the story of a man’s decent further into loneliness after venturing out into the real world after escaping the castle he has been concealed in his whole life. Lovecraft presents a dark and eerie writing style to manifest certain elements in the story that set the theme. Lovecraft suggests themes of loneliness as well as loss of innocence in the story, “The Outsider”, by employing the use of tone, diction, as well as point of view.

In the novel The Meursault Investigation, Kamel Daoud weaves a sister story for Albert Camus’s The Stranger, and has a dialogue of sorts with Camus. At times Daoud’s novel is very critical of Camus, standing in opposition to the attitudes and themes in The Stranger.
