Lots of people may have gone through childhood with a bad life. Maybe their parents couldn’t provide for them. Maybe they didn’t even know who their parents were. Ponyboy, the main character in The Outsiders had a rough life as a child and teenager. He witnessed a lot of deaths of close friends and family members and went through really tough times. He wanted to leave his past life behind and be more successful in life. He wanted to change his place in life. Like Ponyboy, people have the power to change their place in life. Working hard in school is a step to changing your place in life. If you do well in school starting at a young elementary age you can grow up to a high school age and still be doing well. The book The Outsiders is a story loosely based on the life of the author, S.E Hinton. “A lot of Ponyboy’s thoughts are my thoughts. He’s …show more content…
Being similar to Ponyboy, she must have been a very smart kid in school like him. S.E Hinton has written more than just The Outsiders including, Rumble Fish, Tex, and Taming The Star Runner. She must have done well in school like Ponyboy as he mentions “I make good grades and have a high IQ.” Being a good student and making good grades lead her on the path to becoming a well-known author with well-written work. On the other hand. Anton house, a gang member turned grad [graduate] has a different story. Anton House was interviewed by The Journal Times, Christine Won. On April 24, 1967, S.E. Hinton published the book The Outsiders. Then sixteen years later director Francis Ford Coppola’s movie version of The Outsiders was released on March 23, 1983. The book is about a young boy named Ponyboy who lives with his two older brothers because his parents were killed in a automobile accident. Ponyboy goes through a lot of tough times because he is a part of this group known as the Greasers. The Greasers are a group that are known for being from the poor side of town and the Socs are the rich kids on the other side of town. Throughout the entire book the two groups kept fighting and then something terrible happened that changed Ponyboy’s life forever. The movie and book have many differences
In the outsiders, the first chapter introduces the main character, Ponyboy and gives a short history about him and his family. He designates the difference between the relationships between the members in his gang, and the relationship between both of his brothers. His parents were killed in a car accident, so that’s why he was just left alone to live with his older 2 brothers.
Susan Eloise Hinton as known as, S.E. Hinton was born July 22, 1950 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She had grown up as a voluntary tom boy in love with horses. Susan could not write or even type to use her typewriter to write a letter. She had learned to write and taught herself to type in the sixth grade. Susan enjoyed reading but was not satisfied with the literature that was being written for young readers. So she began writing her own stories, focusing mainly on horses from a male child’s point of view. Along with her passionate love for horses, Hinton also had an undying passion for reading books. “I started reading about the same time everyone else did. . .” expressed Hinton whom once wrote in the Fourth Book of Junior Authors. Hinton told that a major influence on her writing was her reading. She stated that she read everything including Comet cans and coffee labels, she began to write a short time after. Hinton was around the age of fifteen and a half when she started writing The Outsiders, becoming a junior while attending Will Rogers’s high school in Tulsa. She became influenced by her peers and began writing and rewriting which took a year and a
Everyone has their own unique traits and personalities which define who you are in life. Ponyboy Curtis, a 15 year old teenager and the main character in the novel “The Outsiders” written by S.E. Hinton shows his many traits throughout the story in which define him. He is the youngest Curtis and a Greaser who narrates the story. He lives with his brothers Darry and Sodapop because his parents died in a car accident. Throughout the novel Ponyboy shows his own unique traits such as his struggles with understanding social classes, his loyalty to others, and finally the importance of a strong family bond.
The Outsiders is an award-winning book written by 15 year old author, SE Hinton. Although the book was published 60 years ago, it had a movie adaptation and is still being sold around the world. The book captures the central theme of classism more than the movie. A few reasons that support my opinion are its use in characterization, imagery, and figurative language. Hinton does an amazing job at creating characters and depth for The Outsiders by utilizing characterization.
S. E. Hinton focuses writing about teenage problems in society. While growing up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the concept of high school cliques was senseless to Hinton. She states, “I was mad about the social situation in my high school where everyone got in their little group and wouldn’t make friends outside of it.” (SEHinton.com) The Outsiders was published in 1967 when Hinton was only 17 years old. Hinton’s wrote the novel to fill a gap in the existing teenage literature available at the time. Hinton is credited with changing the way young adult fiction is written (Peck). She wanted to read realistic stories about teenagers and based The Outsiders on events in her own life. Hinton states, “One
In the novel, The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton, Ponyboy made a choice that ultimately affected his life. Ponyboy had decided to go to the movies all alone one day. He feels more comfortable when he watches movies alone as the narrator states, “When I see a movie with someone it’s kind of uncomfortable, like having someone read your book over your shoulder” (Hinton 2).
S.E. Hilton wrote the book “The Outsiders” when she was 16 and published it when she was 18 in 1967. The book was told through the eyes of the young and dreamy Ponyboy Curtis, his parents had died when he was only 14 so his older brother Darry Curtis had to give up on his dream of becoming a professional football player to start working and taking care of his younger siblings Sodapop and Ponyboy. Johnny was Ponyboy’s best friend, he had an abusive family that didn’t care about him. He was traumatized by Socs as he was almost beaten to death by some Soc with big rings. He was also the gang’s pet, the most misunderstood character, but truly he is the glue that holds everyone together, he is the true hero of this story.
The reason that Ponyboy should stay is before he only lived with his brothers, he lived with his parents and siblings but, their parents unfortunately died in a car accident and his brothers and friends are all he has left and it would not be right to take him away from the people he is close to. A quote to support this are, “What would it be like, i wondered, in a different ceiling? What would it be like in a different bed, in a different room? There was a hard painful lump in my throat that i couldn't swallow.” (Hinton, pg.

As an example, I will talk briefly about my cousin, born into a broken home and forced to deal with illiteracy on a daily basis. Steven was brought up in a bad neighborhood and raised by the streets. His family simply didn’t care about anything other than how they would afford their next bottle of booze or pack of cigarettes. Growing up, he was never told he had to go to school; therefore, he only went on occasion. His lack of schooling in his younger years took its toll on him by the time he hit high school. Living in a bad neighborhood and brought up by gangs, Steven’s life was in a bad condition.
