Thank you for writing The Parting. It changed me. When I got it my mom gave me this book series and my first thought was “I’m not interested in these kinds of books,” but then I had nothing to do so I said, “Maybe I’ll start it and if I don’t like it I’ll stop reading it.” Then I got hooked because of the part where Nellie Mae thought “I’m not fancy, not one bit,” that got me thinking “Ok what does she mean by not fancy?” Then as I read o,n fancy people like me English or non-Amish people. It helped me look at how different some people live compared to me. Nellie taught me that hopes and dreams don’t always work out how you want them to, but you have to keeping working to make everything work out. When I read the part where she was hurrying to Nellie Simple Sweets, it got me thinking about how some people live with plenty of food, clothing, water and a roof over their head. People like me. Some people only have enough for that people with little money. Then there are people with more than enough money to live and give some away to charity - rich people. Everyone works to get money. I started thinking about this because when I read this part I knew that she must help her family by earning a little extra money for them. As I read on I found out that she even helped her father early in the morning with chores. …show more content…
I felt sad when I found out that Suzy died at a young age because she drowned. I felt happy when Nellie got a note from Caleb. Everything they did was a challenge. They were separated after they started courting (dating) but they did whatever they could to stay together. When I finished the book my last thought was how sad I felt for them because they were courting. Then they had to split because Caleb's father told him if he keep courting her, he wouldn’t get his father's land. I also felt sad when I found out that Rosanna had many
Bears Brother. It may seem like a simple term or odd phrase when in reality, it’s the name of the boy in a book call When the Legends Die by Hal Borland. The boy goes by Thomas later in the book, but only after drastic changes are done with in his life. Thomas is 5 years old and lives a simple and easy life when it is all ripped away from him one day. His mother takes him away to the mountains to live where his dad is hiding and all of them begin to live by the old ways again.
First, in her essay “Chief Little Feather, Where Are You”? She was a child, she reflected her loneliness. For example, she explained that her parents owned an appliance store, but especially she remarked that she felt lonely because her parents never had time for her. As she said, “If my father was the brain of the business, my mother was the heart and the soul”. (pg.4). Most of the time she had to do her homework by her own because their parents worked long hours at the store. At her young age her father lets her and her sister Linda to walk home at night. He seemed that he did not care about them, but just the money.
Before, she was a understanding, helpful, and modest person that loved her family and tried to make the best of things without showing her intentions. She did not want people's pity but would accept it in a rather strange way. When she went to the store joe told her she could pay him another day but she declined “I can pay you now, said the woman. Don't worry about it said joe lundy. He reached in his pocket and gave her two caramel candies wrapped in foil...she slipped the caramels in her purse but left the money.”[pg.6] The fact that the woman denied his offer but accepted the candy shows she does not want to be in debt of anyone and can afford her own living. Though she did not change much, she started to lack enthusiasm or any sort of energy “she sat by the stove for hours, not talking. In her lap lay a half-finished letter. A unopened book.”[pg.93] When the woman is alone for all that time it shows how she is no longer interested in what life has to over and is letting depression consume her slowly over

There are characters, which the migrants in the novel encounter, who take risks to help a person in poverty. At the beginning of the novel, Tom tells the driver of the red truck, "´ But sometimes a guy will be a good guy `" (11). Mae, who is unwilling to give a loaf of bread to the Joads, finds herself selling two pieces of candy for less than their value. The man at the register in the camp were the Joads were picking peaches lent Ma a dime. Ma needed sugar for Tom's request for coffee but was a dime short. The man was not allowed to lend money without a slip. " He looked pleadingly at her. And then his face lost its fear. He took ten cents from his pocket and rang it up in the cash register." He took a risk of losing his job for Ma. The people that seem unwilling to help out usually have a good heart. They don't want to see the anguish and the pain these migrants have suffered. They want to help, but there is only so much a person can or is willing to do. The man who owned the gas station had lent gas to previous migrants who gave him dolls, furniture, and other utensils. The junk he got in exchange for
One of the things about the book that I personally liked was the characters, some of them were easy to relate to, even if you couldn't you could relate someone you knew with them. For example, David is not one of the main characters from the story but the more you learn about him, the more you realize how ambitious he is, wanted to change his career path almost every week, standing up to Mr. Neck. I think he's one of the things that helped Melinda find her voice.
I recall growing up when my mother would lecture me prior entering a store. My mother would say, when we go in the store, do not touch anything because she did not have money to pay for broken items; or do you have the money to pay for it? I grew up poor, on welfare, and lived in the projects, so I can relate to Sylvia. However, my mother instilled in me that being poor do not define me, but that education is vital for survival. Just because one the lack resources for a better education, do not mean one must give up; perseverance and determination make you strong. If you think it, you can achieve it was my mother’s motto.
Often throughout the book she mentions that it is said that "you're paid what you're worth", saying that little pay results in you not being to good of a person. With that label they were looked down on and viewed kind of as untouchables. They had low pay, long hours, no overtime pay, and no benefits which leads to low socio-economic-status a job that no one wants to pursue. She stressed that poverty wasn’t a sustainable condition, it's a state of emergency. Citizens in the lower classes are left to fend for themselves and the ten, eight, or six dollar jobs are all that's there for them. What she would encourage them to do is to demand to be paid what they're worth because in the end they will be better off.
Evidently, her life exemplifies the overcoming of poverty and how it really is possible as long as you stick to education and persevere through life.
I instantly imagine everyone barefoot, no actual floors in the houses and take a long time to cook food. This young girl just wanted a simple education, and there could have been so many things to hold her down such as living in poverty, not having clean clothes, a place to shower but instead she fought through and still desired a basic education instead of letting all these things hold her down which I think is really inspirational because she kept going and even drank from a dirty puddle when she knew it would make her sick. She risked her mother getting in trouble and her own health just to get an

“THUMP! THUMP!” A soft thumping sound came from May’s room upstairs. She glanced up from her dinner plate, curious as to what was causing this noise. Her father, Jack, however paid no attention to this disrupting noise. He was too engulfed in reading the news from his phone. May chose to speak up. Since the thumping noise had yet to cease.

As the end of the night approached us, I couldn’t stop thinking about how many mixed emotions I had about starting a whole new chapter in my life. I couldn't wait to go to college, meet all new people, get a degree so that I could start my career path, but I knew that meant I had to say goodbye to my two best friends, who were moving several hours away from me. This was one of the hardest things I had ever had to do in my life. We all cried a little, and then made promises to keep in touch, and then we were off into the real world! I was very happy to be at this point in my life, but I was scared deep down inside.
