Poems are like puzzles. The structure of it looks easy and super short to read. But it contains a great deal of meaning and the more you dig in, the more questions you get. And eventually, you get puzzled in between all the deep answers, trying to figure out which one is the part of the puzzle, and which one is not.
The reason that I attached this poem, The Past, by Ha Jin is because I found it very interesting and I also felt like this poem somehow related to Ha Jin, personally. I may be wrong but, as if he is declaring that his past is part of him, like a shadow, and he will adjust it however he desires by ‘cutting, stitching and making good shoes with it’, just like how one can change his shadow by moving into different light and angle. As in the first stanza, the past is like one’s shadow, one’s reflection. One can never get away from it, especially in the sun. And in the later stanzas, it tells that he saw someone, who hides his past from others and only keeps it to himself, and someone who only remembers the good times of the past and whenever the present

It is ridiculous to read how Red Guards and the neighbors charged Mu Ying for so called crime “adulteress”, yet they arrested only one accused criminal, the women (Mu Ying), when it takes two to have sex. The men, she admitted having sex with was not even considered to have part in wrongdoing, which is extra marital affair. After reading this story I was angered by how Mu Ying’s personal life was attacked and further how the punishment was different depending on the gender. In my opinion, having an affair is a family matter and the only wrongdoing in her actions were owed to her husband, not to anyone else. In addition, the ending of the story lead me to believe the rumors about Russian soldiers must be true, but only this time her husband, who saved and nurtured her after the rape, was not coming for
I would have to say, how a poem becomes a poem is by how it affects the reader emotionally. Poems use word and emotion in a sense to draw pictures in the readers minds. They tell a story that mirrors an event that the writer may have experienced.
Personally, I believe that the hardest part of poetry for me is finding the theme the author presents as it is always implicit. The theme is something one must deconstruct by using the devices presented by the poet. In William Stafford's “5 A.M”, the biggest challenge for me was to find the theme that was not stated directly. Theme can also be mistinturputated in many ways. Something that you may read in a poem may show a different perspective that the author is not trying to intend, and may throw you off the course of finding the theme. Reading poetry may not be as difficult as writing it for some, but personally I believe the analysation of a poem to find the theme is the most challenging aspect of
Ha Jin’s short story “Arrival” is him leaving China and coming to the United States to study abroad. He was told, in 1977, that he was to major in the language English. After he got his undergraduate degree, he got admitted to the graduate program at Brandeis University. Since he is from China, he had to leave his wife and child behind. Ha Jin was having to overcome multiple barriers when getting and arriving to America. Ha Jin was dealing with culture differences, language barriers, and not having his family with him.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by
A poem by definition is a piece of writing that uses figurative language to get a point across by using the rhythmic meter, pattern, and structure. Poetry has been around for centuries and still created today. A poem's content can enter motivate others or have others question the poet’s motive. The book The Making of a Poem: A Norton Anthology of Poetic Forms by Mark Strand and Eavan Boland hold many poems from different poets and centuries. However, this book holds some poems that do not fit the theme of the book.
Poems challenge your mind to think differently and broaden your perspective on the world. The common misinterpretation of poetry is that it is "boring" and "detrimental", poetry is open to interpretation. By teaching children poetry, they can read poems written by others, from their point of view. This sheds light on a unique viewpoint, benefiting their level of creativity.
research or go to other sources to learn about your poem. It is just between you and the poem.
The Chinese government is said to be forceful and overly aggressive. This is seen in the actions of the Red Guard. They publicly denounce Mu Ying to embarrass her. They put a sign on her while she was paraded to the town square to be denounced. Mu admits committing adultery, but this is not enough for the Red Guard.
What differentiates poem from other works of writing? What makes you realize that what you read is a poem but not a short story? Bearing in mind that the answer might differ from person to person, I believe that the crucial difference is that the underlying message is generally not obvious in the poem, and it forces the readers to think about it for a while to understand its deeper meaning. The fact that the message is not apparent in the poem, is often attributed to the usage of metaphors in the poetry. According to Oxford Dictionary, metaphors are the “figure of speech in which a word or phrase is applied to an object or action to which it is not literally applicable”. Even though they are used for different reasons
Writer Shen Congwen is not as straightforward politically involved as Lu Xun is in his short stories. Shen Congwen writes about revolution through a series of lenses that is quite different from that of Lu Xun. Where Lu Xun takes a more rational stance on how things should progress in China through revolution, Shen Congwen wants the reader to see the beauty in revolution and life as a Chinese citizen. In his short story “The New and the Old,” the reader experiences a dramatic scene about a soldier who is called upon to carry out an execution. As the story continues, the reader discovers that this executioner is the best one in town, and that his executions are seen as a true art, not very many people can take off a head with one swing of the
Do you remember the first time you were told to write a poem? A poem about yourself, someone you love or just something that has a basic rhyme pattern. A lot of our first poems were written in grade school as a class project. I remember my first poem, a poem for someone I love, my mother. Starting off with “roses are red and violets are blue” then explaining my love for her. Telling my story about her through the poem. One can think of a poem as a way of telling a story with so much emotion behind it. According to Cambridge Dictionary a poem is defined as “a piece of writing in which the words are carefully chosen for the images and ideas they suggest, and in which the sounds of the words when read aloud, often follow a particular
Poems also have rhythm. Rhythm is built from the accent and meter of a poem. Depending on how and when accents hit in words it creates an audible cadence. The pattern that is setup from this creates the meter. This is analogous to music. There are many parallels that can be drawn from music and songs to poetry. I this is why you can consider many songs to be poems that are set to music accompaniment. In fact going all the way back to the Odyssey we discover that many poems were actually meant to be sung instead of read. There are many ways to break down the rhythm and I haven’t spent the time learning what they are nor have I spent the time dissecting poems to discover their rhythm. I only know of rhythm from what I feel when I read a poem with rhythm. Because of my lack of understanding and comprehension I do not purposefully use rhythm in my writing and I do not plan to start either.
If you have ever read a book or listened to music, you have probably experienced poetry. Poetry is a literary work in which special intensity is given to the expression of feelings and ideas by the use of distinctive style and rhythm. There are many types of poetry and each has its own effect on the words. There are over fifty types of poetry. Poetry is categorized by the number of lines in the poem, the words in the poem, whether it rhymes or not, and what it is about. Some types of poetry examples include haiku, free verse, sonnets, and name poems, although there are many more types as well (Oxford living dictionaries ).People usually use the types of poetry they like best. I will tell you a little bit about a few types of poetry that are my favorite.
Poetry is a varied art form. Poetry is expression with words, using aesthetics and definition. Word choice in poetry is the single most important thing. Devices such as assonance, alliteration and rhythm work in a poem to convey a certain image or to facilitate understanding. Similes and metaphors can take two unlike objects, such as a potato and cinderblock, and if done the correct way use them to describe how Abraham Lincoln dealt with scoundrels. Poetry is beautiful. One of the best genres in poetry, let alone a great literary movement is Romanticism or the post-enlightenment Romantics.
Poems are like the photographic images in literature. The photographs are there to make people see at what the photographers see through taking them. Similarly to poems, they are there to make the readers read the hidden messages that the poets are wanting to say through them. Messages in poems can vary; depending on what the poets are trying to explicate. One topic that most poets explicate about is love. Love is usually interpreted by poets in many different ways. For instance, Susan Young wrote “Wordsmith” in order to interpret what she thinks love is. Throughout the poem, it demonstrates how love is about expressing inner feelings through actions, proving their love towards those dear to them, and how their loved ones would respond to this.
