Greed is perhaps one of the most destructive forces in this world, it breeds anger, hate, jealousy, and more. The novella “The Pearl” is based on how the finding of a pearl causes greed to be awakened in the hearts of people and cause them to commit evil. During the Novella, Steinbeck develops the theme that greed left unchecked can cause immoral behavior and that is show in the doctor, the attackers, and Kino. All of them are forced by greed to commit sins that they otherwise would not do.
The doctor is someone who let his greed lead to immoral behavior.
An excellent example of greed consuming people are the attackers. They were willing to do whatever was necessary to get the pearl from Kino and become wealthy. “Greedy fingers went through

At the beginning of the story they both felt content and happy as show in this quote “Sometimes it rose to an aching chord that caught the throat, saying this is safety, this is warmth, this is the Whole.”. They did not even speak because their understanding was so great. But after Kino found the pearl his relationship steadily deteriorates as shown in this quote “"Kino," she said huskily, "I am afraid. A man can be killed. Let us throw the pearl back into the sea." "Hush," he said fiercely. "I am a man. Hush.”. That shows that as time goes by Kino is acting ruder and harshly to Juana all because of the greed the pearl caused. Another example is "This thing is evil," she cried harshly. "This pearl is like a sin! It will destroy us," and her voice rose shrilly. "Throw it away, Kino. Let us break it between stones. Let us bury it and forget the place. Let us throw it back into the sea. It has brought evil. Kino, my husband, it will destroy us." And in the firelight her lips and her eyes were alive with her fear. But Kino's face was set, and his mind and his will were set” this quote shows that Juana is becoming increasingly fearful yet Kino is sure this is the way and is willing to do whatever is necessary to become wealthy. This causes a strain between their relation. Finally the worst thing Kino commits is the act of attacked Juana. He is described as a snake hissing at her and hitting her that makes her fall. He even continues to kick her after she has fallen and she accepts it and knows he may even murder her. This shows that Kino has broken all limits of humanity and is being consumed by
Kino was awake and watching what she was doing. In the story it says “Kino saw Juana arise silently from beside him.....And then like a shadow she glided toward the door. She paused for a moment beside the hanging box where Coyotito lay, then for a second she was black in the doorway, and then she was gone and rage surged in Kino........She burst clear out of the brush line and stumbled over the little boulders toward the water, and then she heard him coming and she broke into a run. Her arm was up to throw when he leaped at her and caught her arm and wrenched the pearl from her. He struck her in the face with his clenched fist and she fell among the boulders, and he kicked her in the side.........Kino looked down at her and his teeth were bared. He hissed at her like a snake, and Juana stared at him with wide unfrightened eyes, like a sheep before the butcher.” I took note and said it was another example of negative impulsivity. I said this because instead of thinking about the actions he does, he smacked Juana, his wife, because she was going to throw his pearl into the ocean. Now being Kino, you can put yourself in his shoes and you would be pretty mad because your wife took something from you in secret without telling you. Kino shouldn’t had done that because Juana is supporting him and telling what to do and what not to do. Back in the beginning he
Some people really need a reality check when they get too greedy, in the story Kino needed to have a reality check when he found the pearl. In the novella The Pearl by John Steinbeck, a poor man named Kino finds a huge pearl and thinks of all of the things he could have, but he is not the only one that wants the money. In the story Kino becomes too greedy and could really get hurt, he also could lose some things he took for granted. In this story the author shows that materialism and greed left unchecked can lead to immoral behavior through his characters: Kino’s three attackers, the doctor, and Kino himself. One way that the author shows how materialism and greed left unchecked can lead to immoral behavior is through Kino’s three attackers.
However, Kino was enraged with anger at Juana for trying to throw away his pearl. The pearl had changed him for the worse, it had become part of him he loved the pearl. Kino would do anything to make sure that nothing would happen to it, even if it meant beating up his wife in order to save his pearl.
“Greed, like the love of comfort, is a kind of fear.” John Steinbeck’s parable The Pearl illustrates this topic. Even the kindest of people can be driven to greed under the right circumstances. As unassuming of a flaw it seems to be, greed holds an invisible, yet strong hold on nearly every individual. Kino, a Mexican - Indian pearl diver, lives a content life with his wife, Juana, and his infant son, Coyotito. When his son is stung by a scorpion, there seems to be no hope for his treatment, due to the town doctor’s greed and sense of superiority. However, seemingly by chance, Kino manages to retrieve a massive pearl from the depths of the sea. Driven with a sense of hope for his son, Kino must protect his pearl from everything. John
“Perhaps a rifle.” ” (Pg. 30). This quote from the book shows how even though Kino is a good, honest, generous man, the pearl was making him want things even though he didn't need them. Like the rifle, the rifle was always known to be a white man's tool, so when he had a taste of wealth, he started seeing all of these things that he didn't need and just wanted in the pearls reflection. Greed touched the doctor and Kino the same way, although they are two very different people with very different personalities and different desires, greed touched them both. Greed touches every character, big and small, in the book The Pearl. The theme greed brings out everyone's true character and shows what they will do to make their hopes and dreams come true.
In The Pearl, by John Steinbeck a presented idea is that greediness and power corrupt the best of men. The reader learns that greed and power are not a perfect couple, or even a decent one. The author continues to develop an elaborate story based upon the principles of human fault and wrongdoing.
“Greed-always wanting more - is the chief evil of the modern world” - Ralph Wood. In the pearl by John Steinbeck Kino and Juana find a pearl of a lot of value. They prayed for this pearl after their son coyotito gets stung by a scorpion. The doctor and Kino are very greedy and jealous. Greed and jealousy tear apart relationships but family love brings them back.
Greed can hurt others. When someone becomes greedy, he or she treats people differently most of the time in a harmful way. The longer Kino has the pearl the more he changes. When Junan wanted to end the hurt the pearl has caused she took it in the night to throw it in the ocean. When Kino saw he was overcome with anger. This led to Kino assaulting the one he loved most . Kino does this because he grows blinded with anger. Kino never laid a hand on Juana before the pearl. He only thought loving thoughts about her. The greed in his life made him blind to the love he once felt. Greed also brought hurt to Kino and his town. People were so driven by greed they were willing to kill a baby and burn down Kino and Juanas home for the pearl. This could
“Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed.” -Mahatma Gandhi. In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, the pearl symbolizes greed and changes Kino into a greedy person. The pearl’s symbolization transforms from opportunity to greed to evil, reflecting the theme of greed being destructive and evil.
In The Pearl by John Steinbeck, one of the themes is greed, because of the way Kino was possessive of the pearl and how the town all wanted possession of the pearl. Greed is an unavoidable, universal human characteristic. No matter how much you may hide it, you always have a voice in the back of your head saying “I want it.” Greed is the feeling you get when someone has something you want, and you will take extreme measure to get it. Sadly greed is not the best emotion, greed can often drive people crazy and it almost always never ends well for the participating parties. Throughout The Pearl, all of the characters have shown some sign of greed because of this it is one of the themes of this book.
In The Pearl by Steinbeck, “Kino was in mid-leap when the gun crashed and the barrel-flash made a picture on his eyes.” Kino value the pearl more than his wife and son. Humans were raised once you get what you want, you keep wanting more. In the TED talks Paul Pitt did a experiment about a monopoly game about one player has more money than the other and see how they treat each other by playing the game and it's exactly like what happen to Kino. Before he got the pearl he was very caring and helpful but after he got the pearl he started to change, thinking the pearl is the solution to his problems, then he started to hit his own wife and after he realized the pearl is breaking him apart, he throws it away with his wife Juana and that greed can became a destructive force.
The short novel The Pearl by John Steinbeck is based on an old folktale and is about a man named Kino, his wife named Juana, their baby named Coyotito, and the struggle they face when Kino finds the pearl of the world. Steinbeck shows that materialism and greed, left unchecked, can lead to immoral behavior through the characters of the town doctor, Kino, and the three attackers. Steinbeck uses the doctor as a symbol to represent the materialism and greed, left unchecked, can lead to immoral behavior. This seen when the town doctor refuses to treat the dying Coyotito. The narrator states, “Have I nothing better to do then cure insect bites for ‘little Indians’?
“Greed, in the end, fails even the greedy.” – Cathryn Louis. When a person becomes greedy, eventually their greed fails them in some way, shape, or form. The downfall can be destructive, or not. In the novella The Pearl by John Steinbeck, greed plays a symbolic role in the form of a pearl found by a man named Kino. The theme “greed is a destructive force” can be depicted through Kino’s downfall due to his attachment to the Pearl of the World.
The Pearl by John Steinbeck has the universal theme of greed throughout the book. It is shown many times and is the most recognizable in the book. From the time Kino finds the pearl to the resolution it sets loose a river of greed from other people trying to get what he has. Even Kino becomes blind from greed and ends up hurting his family. It is shown when the pearl buyers try to undercut the price of Kino’s pearl. It is also shown when everyone is in his hut right after he finds the pearl including the doctor and the priest. Both of these examples are fueled by greed.
In chapter 5, Juana attempts to throw the pearl into the water, then Kino proceeds to “(59) [strike] her in the face.” When you marry someone you swear to love your spouse until death comes, and punching your wife in the face shatters that vow into pieces. Kino demonstrates a lack of love and care by punching Juana. Adding on, later on in chapter 5, Kino admits that “ (67) the pearl has become my soul.” This displays that Kino now is fully dependent on the Pearl.
