An illusion is a deceptive appearance or impression. In the novella, “The Pearl,” by John Steinbeck, he writes about a man named Kino who comes across a great fortune, and that fortune also brings along unwanted consequences, to his family, and to those around him, resulting in the death of his child, and a few others influenced by greed.. In the novella, “The Pearl,” by John Steinbeck, he uses characters and symbols to show that things are not what they seem.
The doctor is a great example of something not being as it seems. He is the opposite of what most doctors should be like, yet appears like a normal doctor. “ “Have I nothing better to do than cure insect bites for ‘little Indians’? “The little pools were places of life because of the water, and places of death because of the water too” (79). It seems to be a place of life where animals coalesce in peace, but in reality it is a place where death lingers because of the large group of animals. Another support that this is a place of death is this quote, “he saw Coyotito lying in the little cave with the top of his head shot away” (89). This cave is on the mountain that appears to be a place of safety, but is actually a place of death. “He saw the frantic eyes of the man in the pool” (89). This is the last man that Kino killed on the mountain. This is important due to the fact it shows the mountain being a place of death.
The Author, John Steinbeck, uses characters and symbols to show that things are not what they seem. The doctor shows he is not the kind doctor he tries to seem, the pearl shows that it is not the godsend it shows to be in the beginning, and the mountain supports the thesis by showing itself to be a place of death.
