Of all the symbols that are in Steinbeck’s story, the pearl of the world is the most important because of its direct impact on Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. The Pearl is about a poor diver, Kino, who gathers pearls for a living. Then, on a day like any other, Kino comes to the surface of the sea with a pearl as large as a seagull’s egg. Kino thought it would be a source of wealth, hope, and comfort, whereas it was actually the evil that destroyed their family.
Kino lifted the flesh of the oyster, and there it lay, the great pearl, perfect as a moon. He could see dreams form on its surface: they “will be married in the church,” “we will have new clothes,” he will be able to buy the things he always wanted (a harpoon, rifle, etc.), and “my son will …show more content…

But her joy didn’t last for very long. A few days after the pearl was found, Juana cried, “It will destroy us all,” “even our son.” There was also another incident, where Kino was badly wounded, “There was a long deep cut in his cheek from ear to chin, a deep, bleeding slash.” After this occurred, Juana said, “Kino, this pearl is evil. Let us destroy it before it destroys us. Let us crush it between two stones. Let us-let us throw it back into the sea where it belongs. Kino, it is evil, it is evil.
Though coyotito was small and had no way of talking or communicating, the pearl brought the most evil to him. He was innocent and unaware, but due to his father’s desires, he was murdered. Kino wanted him to have a chance, he wanted him to go to school, and have an education. “My son will go to school,” he said, and the neighbors were hushed.
In order to sell his pearl for the highest price possible, Kino was forced to go to the capital. This was due to being cheated by the local pearl buyers. “I have been cheated,” Kino cried fiercely. “My pearl is not for sale here. I will go perhaps even to the capital.” By doing so, Kino wasn’t only risking a long journey, but also putting his family in harm’s
