The main thing I connected from the book to real life was the sad lives of outcast kids. I thought about the outcast kids at Triton, did they have a story similar to Charlie’s? Lately I’ve been considering the circumstances of their lives. They have relationships and fights and plans for life just like the rest of us. However very few people, if any know about them. I felt sad but also guilty when thinking about this because just sitting here and feeling bad for them isn’t doing anything. I truly hope to one day be someone’s Sam or Patrick and help them see the world as a better place. I’ve also noticed that Charlie resembles Holden in a way. Charlie, like Holden, often talks about childhood and not wanting to become an adult. “And I thought that all those little kids are going to grow up someday” (74) Charlie explained while describing a happy group of young children. This reminded me of the time Holden exclaimed the happiness he got from listening to the the little boy sing on the
The Perks of being a Wildflower movie is a great demonstration on adolescence and childhood development as it portrays how much we as humans are effected by our early childhood years and how we struggle to make sense of life while navigating through adolescence. We are molded by our environment, but also shaped by the neglect or abuse we suffer as children. The traumatic experiences are life altering and if not dealt with can have dramatic outcomes for our future. The movie has a great story line and walks the audience through the character and identity development of an adolescence. Dissecting Charlies character will be helpful in understanding that part of a human’s life and development.
The book is aa coming of age letter-style novel written by Stephen Chbosky. This is the story of a fifteen-year-old male teen going through changes in his life. Charlie has an older brother and sister, but is still quite coy. He finds friends in Sam and Patrick, whom introduce Charlie to their buddies, and goes to parties with them. He goes through different types of relations with these people, being their friend to not socializing with them, because they were upset with Charlie, to ultimately reuniting as friends, writing all these thoughts to an unknown pen-pal.
Holden also shows his concern for younger children when he was sitting down and noticed something crazy. “Somebody'd written "Fuck you" on the wall. It drove me damn near crazy. I thought how Phoebe and all the other little
‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ follows shy and kind-natured Charlie Kelmeckis (Logan Lerman- Percy Jackson, The Butterfly Effect) as he enters high school alone, after the recent loss of his middle school best friend to suicide. Charlie gets befriended by seniors Sam (Emma Watson- Harry Potter-Beauty and the Beast) and Patrick (Ezra Miller- Justice League, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them) and finally feels accepted.
thought while he gave Sam her Christmas present. To Charlie, music is sacred. He expresses his admiration to someone through music, like when he gave the 45 record to Sam, or gave Patrick a mixed tape. When he likes someone, he shares his music with him, it’s his way of
I think that The Perks of Being a Wallflower is exceptional in its class of literary works mainly because Chbosky chose to push the limits of teen fiction. Most young adult writers are afraid to further explore the world of drugs, sexuality, and depression in too much detail. What most writers fail to realize is that high school vividly explains all those things. Young readers are ready for a book that seems to understand that too. Chobosky did a wonderful job at developing and defining each character. He made them seem real, which helps readers relate. Although many may think that the number of controversial issues discussed in the book makes it negative, the book is really about finding yourself in the midst of chaos and peer pressure. Charlie eventually
The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a novel about coming of age that is seen through the perspective of Charlie, a young ‘wallflower’ that is starting high school and experiences the troublesome teenage life filled with drugs, sexuality and love. Charlie writes this book in a series of letters to an anonymous person. Charlie is the main protagonist of the story who is apprehensive and a kind-hearted boy however he has many problems happening in his life that he doesn’t like to concern others with “I just don’t want you to worry about me, or think you’ve met me, or waste your time anymore”. I admire Charlie because he is very considerate of others and although he is shy he overcomes this fear when he tries to find friends and step out of his comfort zone” Normally I am very shy, but (Patrick) seemed like the kind of guy you could just walk up to at a football game even though you were three years younger and not popular”. In return Charlie is rewarded with his first real friend at high school. I also admire Charlie for his mature attitude towards finding new friends and moving on from the death of his friend Michael. Charlie really needed to start interacting more with people, during the story we find out that Charlie misses having a friend and that being alone can be difficult and cause negative effects “It would be very nice to have a friend again. I would like that even more than a date”. I think
Charlie is very far from what most people call normal: he is shy, introverted, awkward, independent, paranoid, confused, respectable and kind; showing many examples of this throughout the book. He keeps to himself for the most part and is constantly in his own head. Aside from the many negative traits he also has many attributes: he is a loyal friend and listens to the people he talks to, he is a caring person and comforts those in need. However he has his flaws as well: Charlie can get very angry and upset at others which causes him to lash out with violence or sadness, he is extremely sensitive, crying frequently and constantly questioning himself. Several of his peers labeled him as nerd or a weirdo, which damaged
After the death of his best friend and his aunt, Charlie faces new struggles when he arrives for his first day of high school. He meets Patrick and Sam, who become his friends. Charlie did not know it at first, but meeting Patrick and Sam would have a great influence on his future. His two friends attempt to bring stability in his life and
The book and the movie for The Perks of Being a Wallflower are extremely different, and I believe that the movie is much better than the book. The book is written much differently than the movie. There are lots of scenes that are in the book but not in the movie and that are in the movie not the book. The movie focuses less on the bigger, depressing topics than the book does. The characters in the movie are also much different than they are in the book. Their personalities are very different in the movie than the author described them as in the book.
Likewise, friendships with Sam, Patrick, Mary Elizabeth, and Bob help Charlie recognize his positive attributes. This allows Charlie to acknowledge the value he brings to the world. The reader sees Charlie come into himself and become comfortable with who he is. You see this at the end of the novel on page 213, when Charlie states, “So if this does end up being my last letter, please believe that things are good with me, and even when they’re not, they will be soon enough.” This demonstrates the advancements Charlie has made with himself.
At the beginning, Charlie is without friends and is rather alone. He is very gifted and quite an overthinker which expels him from the usual teenage social groups. This changes, however, when he meets Sam and Patrick at a football game. They expose him to all new experiences. Resulting from his new friendships, is his relationship with Mary Elizabeth, his experimentations with drugs, and new knowledge of being a person. During this time, he is increasingly happy because Charlie was finally living.
Every kid who grows up in the suburbs loves to visit the big city. Stephen Chbosky’s novel, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, is based in the suburbs of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, that is filled with the problems most suburbs face. Further, Chbosky continuously describes different very troubling mental illnesses which directly and indirectly affect his main character Charlie and all the people around him. Moreover, the proximity in which Charlie lives to the city contributes to his relationships with his friends and family. In the cold suburbs of Pennsylvania, life is different than life in the city, this greatly influences the lifestyle of people throughout the novel.
Sociology is the scientific study of being behavior in human groups (Schaefer). There are very many examples of sociology in the movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower, but I view alienation, deviance, and gender roles to be the most prominent. This movie is about the struggles of a teenage boy named Charlie’s freshman year of high school. Charlie is seen as a social outcast and he just barely makes it through the year with the help of his best friends Sam and Patrick. Throughout the movie Charlie experiences most of the basic struggles of starting high school and some. This movie is very relateable since it gives a more realistic view of high school for some people. Charlie , and the audience, learns the importance of love and friendship in growing up in today’s society.
Loneliness is a feeling that everyone will experience at some point in their life. Loneliness can be felt even when you’re in a room full of people. In “The Perks of Being a Wallflower,” the characters, including Charlie, are no exception to this feeling of being lonely. Teenagers are probably the age group that has this feeling the most. This a time in life that you are changing, the people around you are changing, and you’re finally growing up and maturing and each person handles these changes differently. We each will feel this as some point as we grow and realize that the things and the people that we have grown accustomed to won’t be there anymore because it’s time for us to experience new things in life.
