“Friends are the family you get to choose for yourself.” (Mia Sheridan). People get to choose their friends by their likes and dislikes, but they don’t get to choose their family. In the book, The Pigman, John, Lorraine, and Mr. Pignati demonstrate how friends can change the way their friends think, feel, and act. Many of the characters’ parents show the way one's family can influence bad habits in one’s life. The friends we choose help us make the best memories; John and Lorraine make the best memories with their friend Mr. Pignati more than their family. Sometimes, the closest families are not related to each other. Friends can change each other's state of mind. Throughout the novel, many of the characters show how they have changed, or tried to change, each other's mind by what they do, how they act, or how they think. Lorraine says of John, “I have tried to explain to him how dangerous it was, particularly smoking…”(Zindel 8). That quote shows how Lorraine tries to change John’s mind about how drinking and smoking can be harmful. In addition, John tries to change Lorraine’s state of mind about how she looks. Bore influences how John thinks and feels. He also taught John his bad drinking and smoking habits. John says, of his father, “Bore got a big kick out of it when I was ten years old and I’d go around the house emptying all the beer glasses”(Zindel 94). That quote shows how Bore taught John his bad drinking habit. It also shows how John took on drinking at a young age, and was trying to fit in with his father. Furthermore, Lorraine’s mother has influenced her to feel like she doesn’t belong, and has made her feel alone.
