George Orwell has represented various social groups from Russian History in Animal Farm in order to attack the ruling powers of Stalin’s Russia. Groups like the pigs and Mr. Jones were portrayed as cruel totalitarian leaders, and the other animals are portrayed as naïve and unaware of their own oppression. Napoleon and the pigs in Animal Farm represent Stalin and his oligarchy. Orwell puts them in a negative light and depicts them as a cruel totalitarian regime. Stalin is the second leader of the Soviet Union. He uses Napoleon to represent Stalin by making references in the book to real events. Instead of the original 7 commandments everyone agreed on, it was changed to simply “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”. One of the principles of Animalism was for everyone to be treated fairly. But Napoleon was hungry for control and it became a totalitarian regime, rather than a “communist” society. A technique that was used to show Napoleon’s superiority was imagery. “Out came Napoleon… majestically upright, casting haughty glances from side to side… He carried a whip”. This quote shows he thought very highly of himself and had the most power. The whip he held was a symbol of control. Animal Farm went from having no animal more or less powerful than another, to having an obvious social pyramid. Napoleon had all the power in his hands, and made all the rules. Anyone who dared to step out of line was given a harsh punishment. The other pigs were in his oligarchy because they were considered the “smartest” since they were the best at reading and writing. All of the other animals were in the working class. They were fully controlled by the pigs and worked the hardest, but got the least in return.
