Our way of eating has changed a lot, including the way we get food directly to ourselves. Agriculture has taken a drastic change for the worst, and our society is slowly paying the price for these choices. We are facing an utmost dangerous time in our food industry, and we seem to be ignoring it. We unawarely face these dangers in our everyday grocery shopping and food eatouts due to the harsh livestock and farm conditions. If society were to learn about the aftermath of our food choices, we would be entitled to change our ways. Food is no longer the same and it’s time we get education on it for our future.
Is very alarming to see how our society has reached the point where we disregard everything we eat as nutritious value. As Wendell Berry states in “The Pleasures of Eating” (2010), “They think of food as an agricultural product, perhaps, but they do not think of themselves as participants in agriculture” (21). It’s interesting to see how our food industry is controlled by a couple of companies, when in reality we have our own responsibility and choice to eat free. We’re living in a time where 10

Take films such as “Food Inc” by director Robert Kenner, that shows us the harsh reality of the food industry in Eric Schlosser “Food Inc” book. We are exposed to demanding and cruel aspects that our food goes through. Things such as CAFO camps, where in reality they are concentration camps for livestock causing unlivable conditions (Robert Kenner, “Food Inc”). Unjustified acts of labor like the importation of illegal immigrants to work in meat factories which are later deported thanks to the help of the companies (Robert Kenner, “Food Inc”). “Food Inc” does a great job in pointing out everything wrong with our food industry and introducing us to the real people who are trying to make a positive change. It’s a film of fear, but hope for our food
This gap has lead people to become “passive consumers” that are ignorant towards the origin of their food, how it is produced, and their role in the modern food industry. Berry argues that the pleasure of eating cannot be known without understanding that eating is involved in the agricultural process. He urges people to look into where and how their food is produced and under what conditions. He asserts that food is now a product of industry meaning the food industry no longer cares about the quality of food and how healthy it is, but how much can be produced at a small price. Berry then gives seven suggestions that can help people eat responsibly and understand the pleasures of eating. By being active in our world and in how we eat, people can eat with the fullest pleasure by being connected with the world around them and eating with understanding and gratitude
Have you ever been in a rush, low on cash, and looking for something to eat so you didn’t really have a choice but to grab a burger with fries at your local fast food place? Have you ever paused or stopped to think about where the burger really came from, or the process that went in to be made? The Food Inc documentary investigates and exposes the American industrial production of meat, grains, and vegetables. Robert Kenner the producer of the film makes allegations in this film and he explores how food industries are deliberately hiding how and where it is our food is coming from. He emphasizes that we should find out where our food comes from and why is it that the food industry does not want us to know. Food Inc. does not only uses compelling images, such as hundreds of baby chickens being raised in spaces where they do not see an inch of sunlight, it also includes the speeches and stories of farmers, families, government officials, and victims of the food industry. The four current problems facing today’s food industry are the reformed usage of the false advertisement within the labeling of products , mistreatment of farmed animals, and the harmful chemical in our meats. The documentary Food Inc uses very persuasive tactics that demonstrates strong elements of pathos, ethos, and logos make an effective appeal, while uncovering the dark side of the food industry.
The Omnivore’s Dilemma, written by Michael Pollan, gives light to the question, “What should we have for dinner?” that he thinks Americans today cannot answer simply due to the fact that there are too many food options. This book serves as an eye-opener to challenge readers to be more aware and accountable of what is consumed daily. In order to understand fully where our food comes from, we must follow it back to the very beginning. Pollan goes on to discuss three different modern food chains in which we get our food: the industrial, the organic, and the hunter-gatherer. By tracing our food back to the beginning, we can understand that most of the nutritional and health problems America is going through today can be found on the farms that make our food and the government that can decide what happens. America deals with many food related illness such as, heart disease, obesity, and type II diabetes. Majority of a human and animals diet consists of being corn-fed leading to a high cause of obesity in the United States these are just some of the many diseases that come with over processed foods and diets we are unaware of. In this study, we will highlight the environmental and health issues and impacts related with modern agriculture and how these systems can be made more sustainable.
There are many things wrong with our food system but one of the principal problems is us and our decisions. Wendell Berry who is a farmer and environmental activist wrote in the article The Pleasures of Eating about his theory of eating responsibly which included his opinion on food and the influence others have on what type of food we consume. In his article he addresses the problem with the industries’ influence on the quality of what we eat and the role the consumer has in this process. He states that we cannot be free if our decisions are influenced by others and all we do is agree to what they tell us we should.
Margret Sanger established the organization in 1916 when she founded the first family planning health center in New York. Due to the cultural belief at that time, the relevant authorities closed the clinic. However, Sanger's vision led her to open another clinic in 1923 in Manhattan. The authorities in Manhattan were tolerant to the Birth Control Clinical Research Brue (Sanger’s clinic). As Sanger was giving contraceptives to women, she was also collecting data about the effectiveness and safety of every contraceptive. By 1966, Planned Parenthood Federation had grown from a small heath care center in Manhattan to a national organization that is renowned to revolutionized reproductive health care among women. With time, Sanger has worked to
Barry is asking the public to take care of their health and learn more about the food industry. He is asking us to participate in food production by growing our own food and preparing our own meals. He suggests we need to buy directly from local farmers. Even though this article was written twenty seven years ago, it is still relevant to today’s society. Wendell Berry's “The Pleasure Of Eating” is a strong article about how and why people take for granted the food they eat. I agree with Barry that eating is a cultural and agricultural act. I also agree that the food industry has fooled us into buying prepared food, and fooled us to believe that chemicals in our food is good for us. However we need to eat responsibly, by knowing where our food comes from. We also need to buy from local farmers, and prepare our own meals. I agree that we need to grow our own food to feel the reward and labor that farmers feel.
Lately I have been reading a very inspiring book by Michael Pollan called, In Defense of Food. This book goes into great detail of how food changed over the years and how the impact of the industrialization of our food has poisoned our way of eating. Pollan mentions that the food our ancestors ate back in the days were all real food and now the vast majority of them are all refined, processed, or canned. As he goes into the history of food and the important people who discovered such principles and concepts of nutrition, he goes in depth to explain that the majority of the food we eat today, should not be eaten at all.
Food is one of the most important aspects of the human body. Over time it has been proven that food is the key to survival. Food for human beings has definitely made a drastic change throughout the centuries. With that the food industry has been talked about quite a bit. We consume so much processed food to the point where we adapt unhealthy diets which causes us to develop unhealthy habits. In order to combat this we humans have taken different approaches to including buying organic produce as an alternative to conventional, going vegan, as well as just plain watching what they eat
Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto is an eye-opening analysis of the American food industry and the fear driven relationship many of us have with food. He talks in depth about all the little scientific studies, misconceptions and confusions that have gathered over the past fifty years. In the end provide us with a piece of advice that should be obvious but somehow is not, "Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants." He follows the history of nutritionism and the industrialization of food, in hopes to answer one question….. how and when "mom" ceded control of our food choices to nutritionists, food marketers and the government.
Have you ever thought of food as an “agricultural act”? When we are hungry, we eat whatever we want. We do not strive to get the right type of nutrients in what we consume daily or enjoy eating healthy. Food that is available to use effortlessly is the food we go for instead of rediscovering the ‘pleasure’ of food. Wendell Berry contributes in many different ways in his article including emotional appeal and reality to prove to us the various questions that should be arising in our minds when purchasing foods.
Growing up, many people believe that is necessary to consume meat on a daily basis in order to survive. However, animal products and junk food are not necessary in order to survive and be healthy. Animal products and junk food are marketed heavily in the media. The government also plays a large role in supporting both the production of animal products and junk food. The purpose of this Ted Talk was to inform the general public the dangers of eating too many animal products and too much junk food and to persuade the public to change their diets to better their health and the environment.
In the documentary Food Inc. The message is that the food industry does not want us to know about what we are eating. . This problem may be true however it is driven by the consumer’s continual interest in buying cheaper and cheaper products. The farmers way of life has been revolutionized. Modern farmers think faster, cheaper, bigger. It’s really not until when consumers demand
The first issue with food production is that the public does not know where our food comes from since food corporations prefer not to tell us. Because of this, it has been said that we no longer enjoy our food because we do not know it’s origins. In the article, “The Pleasures of Eating,” Wendell Berry states, “The Industrial eater is, in fact, one who does not know that eating is an agricultural act, who no longer knows or imagines the connections between eating and the land...in short, a victim” (Berry). People have grown to become industrial eaters, who are also referred to as victims. This is because they have no care in the world on what they are eating, which is dangerous.
Many people in the Modern world believe that religious books and laws must be changed to fit the lives of those that live in the 21st century; in this essay I shall argue both sides and come to a final decision on whether or not they should update themselves.
