As defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, social media is: “forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content” (Merriam Webster’s online dictionary 2017). Social media is commonly used in today’s society. Platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have taken over, building a community with many active users. Social media is especially popular among adolescents. (Radovic et al.). Further, such sites as these allow for an easy way to communicate and stay updated on the latest trends. However, it comes with many problems as well. With all the time that is spent on social media, it can make people less concentrated on the ‘real world’, and the access to an abundance of information can lead to self-esteem issues. Therefore, social media has more negative aspects than positive for the younger generations in particular. As mentioned previously Social media does indeed have positive aspects, with the main one being easy communication with the vast majority of the world. Moreover, Social media platforms make it so simple to access unlimited information and to keep in touch with many more people than was thought ever possible. Even though online interactions do differ from seeing someone in person, social media platforms allow an easy form of interaction (Noor Al-Deen and Hendricks 12). Communicating through social media
Social media is nothing, but a distracting, timewasting, nuisance to everyone surrounded by it, right? Wrong. Social media has changed the world as we know it. People can share information quickly, publish their thoughts, and exchange their ideas. Social media is becoming a certainty in this modern age, which is why it should be embraced rather than criticized. Although there is concern over potential for cyberbullying and lack of privacy, the use of social media is inevitable in teenagers’ lives, and necessary to the positive development of adolescents because it allows adolescents to gain confidence when interacting with others, it encourages users to create and maintain friendships, and it can facilitate learning while promoting educational growth.
Social Media is a controversial topic. For this reason, many people have argued whether social media is positive or negative. Nevertheless, there is more evidence supporting the idea that social media has had positive implications on society. Reasons for this include that social media can help your career and that it can aid adolescents when it comes to socializing. However, there are several other individuals who hold on to a different view.

Social media has been known to help students develop important knowledge and social skills. “At first glance this may seem like a waste of time; however it also helps students to develop important knowledge and social skills, and be active citizens who create and share content.” (Chen 3). The more time teens spend on social media the more they become aware of their own social side and how to interact with others, especially their peers. “Some types of social media has beneficial effects, like helping adolescents establish some sense of identity and build networking skills” (Riley Davis). Too much time being spent on social media can also exploit teens to some harsh realities that they’ve probably never experienced in their lives before.

LinkedIn and Pinterest are tied for second at 28% of users, 26% use Instagram, and Twitter falls last in the top 5 most used social medias with 23% of users (Pew, 2014). In September of 2013 the Pew Research Center measured that 90% of adults ages 18-29 used these social media outlets on a daily basis, which is an astonishing increase from the 9% that was measured in February 2005 (Pew, 2014).
