Scientist have shown us that there is a clear link between social relationships and health (James, Karl, & Umberson, 1988). One of ways through which social ties work to influence health is through behavioral factors which have a combined impact on the health of the general population (Umberson & Montez, 2010).
Unhealthy behaviors have been estimated to account for a sizeable percentage of morbidity and mortality in the United States and are potentially preventable. Social relationships can create a sense of responsibility that makes individuals engage in behaviors which protect the health of others, as well as their own health (Umberson & Montez, 2010). Understanding how family ties positively influence health habits and seeing how these healthy habits become modified as we get older, become more independent and make new friends could be very instrumental in improving the adoption of preventive health practices.
Seeman (2002) concluded that social relationships have both health promoting and damaging effects in older adults, and suggested that the social environment could be vital in future health promotion efforts.
