The Art of Advancing My parents always raised me to believe that the arts are how we understand ourselves and everyone around us. Growing up in Appalachia, other´s opinion about the arts greatly juxtaposed mine. When you live in a community where it is common to live below the poverty line, it’s hard for most people to care about anything that isn’t considered useful. The mindset of those living in Appalachia is almost always, as put by one mountain woman, “Livin’s more important than schoolin’” (Constance Elam, Culture, Poverty, and Education in Appalachian Kentucky). However, Appalachia is not the only place with this mindset. Afghanistan people also tend to believe that the arts are less important than other things. However, I believe that a change in mindset would be beneficial to the advancement of these communities. Further incorporating the arts into Afghani and Appalachian culture can mold the growth of these communities as well as reshape the negative stereotypes associated with them. The influence of art has had a positive impact on the communities they flourish in. States such as New York and California, are as well known for their impact on social change as their encouragement of the arts. Artistic expression paints the path of social change by sharing an individual person or group’s experience with anyone who experiences their art. Sure, listing off any facts about a negative situation would allow people to know what was going on, but, as penned by Olafur
Some of the most redefining and revolutionary moments in the history of man socially, have been catalyzed by use of art. Throughout the age’s music, imagery and poetry have been a fundamental tool in reaching out to the masses to condemn vices, motivate people and bring awareness. One cannot underestimate the impact that art has in influencing and communicating an idea to the people. Art is an integral ingredient in the cohesion and integration of any society. Through poetry, the poet is able to put across a message that resonates in the minds of the reader in an artistic manner that ultimately triggers a response. Art is therefore a force to reckon with in the transformation of a society or a regime.
n reflecting on this week’s readings, I can see the connection between the previous readings on the Harlem Renaissance and the one on Abstract Expressionism, especially as it relates to art being used for social change. Just as our society was moving at a fast pace, so was our art. Looking back, it’s amazing to see how racism, women’s rights and war brought on so many different attitudes and the art of the 20th century represented these different ideas. As it relates to war, many people were concerned about the dangers of democracy, while others emphasized patriotism. In either case, you can see a split between people’s perceptions and beliefs. It’s clear that most of the artist of the 20th century that we discussed were always on the cutting edge toward cultural change. Their shocking and innovative techniques reflected the changing values that represented a forever changing society; and often times their art helped shaped our culture, and at the same time, reflected that culture back on to us. From all the different art movements discussed during this course, this week’s readings represents the changing role they art is beginning to play in the political area. I believe that art plays a vital role in democracy, by creating openness and the freedom of expression. It’s amazing how art, be that it through a painting, literature, sculpting or through music can bring about change. Art really makes an impact on our culture and society, from instilling values or by changing opinions. It seems at the heart of every major change throughout our history, you will find an artist that created that change through his or her works. We form our ideas by seeing,
Arts, as a luxury, are considered as a periphery element in the process of community development, which play a vital role in community development. Besides, arts are a catalyst to increase cultural awareness, an important element of this awareness to community coherence.
In “Is Art a Waste of time?” it is said that “Art’s impact grows by reaching larger audiences” (Southan, 439). For example, the more people who see images/videos of police officers harassing or using unnecessary brutal force on people of color the impact also grows. Individuals will start to empathize and want to make a change, therefore, bringing attention to the issue. Through art like images in the newspaper, videos on the internet, and paintings is how we learn about many issues going on in the world. If it was not for this form of art we would live in a world full of unaware people, and that would be chaos.
Each generation presents us with the different varieties of artistic expression. The prevalence of art impacting society has always been constant. With the many forms of artistic expression that exist, it is also easy to see how an individual can test out the different options available to them until finding a specific form that suits their tastes. When this happens, the artist and viewer create a special mutually beneficial relationship. This is evident in the article, “Memory, Money and Persistence: Theater Of Social Change in Context” written by Arlene Goldbard. . Goldbard used her article to expose the concept of social awareness and performances that are relevant to and can even change the open world outside of the arts. This is evident
This dissertation is dedicated to all the Artists in the world who believe that the Arts are agents of social development, cooperation, solidarity, and tolerance, even when their lives confront the injustices of the system.
Art is important and has changed history in many ways. One reason why art is important is because art has meaning to it, I will be talking about Leonardo Da Vinci and how he and his paintings changed the world. Another one of the reasons how art changed the world is the printing press. I will be explaining how the printing press helped art change the world. Then I will explain how art helps change the world by improving kids thinking, imagination and helps relieve kids depression.
Art plays an important role in each society. Most artists believe that this kind of activities can enhance the people’s perspective, fuel economic development, bring intellectual stimulation and develop the community identity. Art can help people to understand the things such as the social issues in different ways. It can be a tool to build social connections among people with different identities.
In addition, art can be a way people can help express and bring attention to their own ideas. David again says that if a person were to find an inspirational art piece, say on a building or poster, then those art pieces will help a person become motivated to make a change in their world. Furthermore, if a person were to create inspirational art then that allows a person to get their own ideas across to the world. That person may be the one to help people make a change or that piece of art can show the creator of the art is trying to make a difference in their world. So to restate, “everywhere [people] go art is evident. Parks often use sculptures to add interest and to inform people.
the past and present of the value of art and how the world is mending its ways.
Where would the world be without music? People look at many high schools and see them for their football team or their basketball team, but what about the band or show choir? Many fine arts departments, such as theatre, band, choir, and debate, are overshadowed by athletics. This has lead to fine arts receiving less funding causing them to eventually shut down. Fine arts in public school provides students with community and scholarships towards a brighter future.
The academic programs at Simpson College, whether it be Mathematics, Sciences, or the Arts, have made an outstanding impact on my life. Initially attracting my interest to this institution, these programs hold students to the highest standard and expect nothing less than success. While currently majoring in Actuarial Science and Economics and minoring in Computer Science and Spanish, I have always carried a great appreciation for the Arts, especially photography. Having the ability to capture a single moment in time while also being able to relive that moment and all of its memories is unlike any other experience. Because of this unique trait and various others, the Arts will always carry a significant meaning throughout my life experiences.
The statement of when artists feel issues in strong and personal way, or that they have something to say about the human condition, they can produce powerful, disturbing and intuitive artworks is true because in many situations, art has influence people to make drastic changes. Artists, in some cases have a stronger influence on people rather that someone making a speech as art involves techniques such as colour, the type of medium and the location in which it was painted. The article, ‘Influence of Art on American Society’ and the artist Shepard Fairey correspond with this statement through facts and artworks.
Around the world, communities carve statues, paint pictures, or assemble and organize items, all of which are ultimately choreographed reflections of who they are. What form the art takes is in the eye of the artist as much as it is in the eye of the beholder. Art incorporates pride – pride of awareness, of authenticity, of individuality, of message, of authorship, the list goes on and on. However, it is universally true is that the underlying message will withstand the test of time. As such, Art has been a part of humanity for thousands of years. People have been viewing, discussing, comparing, analyzing, and fighting over art for centuries. What changes from time to time, however, is the role that art often plays within communities and society. Sometimes art is important for communicating emotions and reinforcing messages and while other times it is a reminder of where we came from. Art’s role in society changes from time to time. Of the many things art means to a community, it also provides a means for society: i) to take pride in culture and history, ii) to communicate messages and emotional catalysts, and iii) to learn.
Everywhere you look you see art. It is everywhere in our life today and has become an important part of our daily life. Arts education helps students develop creativity, visual learning, self-confidence, decision making, improved academic performance, and self-motivation. All are necessary to be successful in life. “Art education isn’t something we add on after we’ve achieved other priorities, like raising test scores and getting kids into college,” said the First Lady Michelle Obama. Art education is important for future students. It allows students to learn about themselves, their culture, their community and the world around them. Creativity and Imagination will be encouraged through the development of an artistic mind. Art uses science, math, and creativity. Art uses math because it involves shapes and angles and when people make an art project with geometric shapes they use math to find what is this angle worth? Science needs art because art helps people to understand and see what they are learning in science classes. Scientists always use and draw models that include art.
