In Elfriede Jelinek’s “The Piano Teacher”, the idea of power is prevalent throughout the novel. Erika and her mother project a negative dependency towards each other where both is at the same time powerful and powerless. Erika is powerful when she defies her mother. More specifically, when she buys clothes that attract the “enemy” against her mother’s will. Her mother is domineering where she always keeps an eye on Erika and looks at her as if she was a child. Erika and her mother constantly at battle where, on one hand, Erika wants to leave her mother to pursue Klemmer but on the other hand, Erika also needs her. The power dynamic results in Erika only projecting negative feelings of jealousy and violence where she cannot play music with emotions
