Power is a characteristic that most people strive to obtain. It represents strength and dominance in society, and many strive to be in control. Even those who are close to one another can fight for power among themselves if it would serve to elevate one of them above the others. In “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff, this conflict among friends is exactly what happens. Frank, Tub, and Kenny all have inherent flaws (lust, gluttony, and wrath, respectively) that allow them to be callous and exceedingly selfish. The three hunters show how humans can be unjust and corrupted by the mere thought of becoming more “powerful” than another. Through the elements of surprise, suspense, and conflict, “Hunters in the Snow” depicts a trio of so-called friends fighting one another to become more the most powerful and important in the group. …show more content…
The foremost example would be after Kenny has shot the post, the tree, and the dog. Kenny then sets his aim to Tub, who then unexpectedly shoots Kenny in so-called self-defense. In reality, Tub had probably been waiting all night to have the chance to shoot Kenny after all of the ridicule he wrought upon Tub. By shooting Kenny, Tub has gained an upper hand in the power struggle. When the trio leaves to take Kenny to get medical attention, Tub and Frank surprisingly stop for food and warmth despite Kenny’s dying in the back of the truck. This shows how Kenny has lost his power completely over Tub and
Bobbi Kristina Brown is in hospice in what may turn out to be her final days. Family members gather around her bedside for a never-ending prayer vigil. It should be a quiet time for her and her family members, but it isn’t. A storm is raging in spite of the soft music playing in the background and the lit candles. Someone entered the room and snapped a picture of Bobbi Kristina. Then he or she tries to sell it to the highest bidder. According to TMZ, July 7, 2015, this resulted in banning all members of Bobby Brown’s family from entering the room. Security at the hospice has orders to keep everyone out, except for a few key members. The only ones exempt from the ban is Bobby Brown, Pat Houston, Cissy Houston, and anyone else involved with Bobbi
A man having to be tough and to show no affection can sometimes take a toll on their physical self being, yet they can also still be somewhat sensitive to others emotions and feelings. In this short story by Tobias Wolff, “Hunters in the Snow”, Tub shows some situations of strength, weaknesses and hardships men endure as a friend or
With the hopes that it wouldn't snow, I traveled to Silverton Colorado with my dad in October. My dad and I had six elk tags for the very first rifle season. We pulled our camp trailer down to a nice wooded area about five miles before you get into town. The camp sight was about a quarter mile off of the highway. There were trees all around the camping spot; the only break in the trees was where the road came through.
As I read the short story Hunters in the Snow, I was very intrigued in finding out what was going to happen next. One thing I didn’t understand was why Tobias Wolff did not provide information as to how the three men met. It kind of throws off the story in the beginning because we don’t know any information about any of the men. I was very disappointed in the ending of the story because the author didn’t let readers know whether or not Kenny made it to the hospital. Tobias Wolff’s Hunters in the Snow was surprisingly a very compelling story, I also love the outdoors and hunting is one of my hobbies so it kept me on the edge of my seat.
The short story Hunters in the Snow by Tobias Wolff depicts three men that go on a hunting trip that changes the course of their lives. Each character lies to himself to accept his actions in his life. Kenny, Frank, and Tub need to successfully fool themselves before they can deceive anyone else. Each of the men are immature and selfish. They don't realize how their decisions impact other people's lives. They justify their lies with their own insecurities about their lifestyles. Their lies impact the situations they encounter and change their lives forever.
Personal power has the ability to be essential to greatness, and at the same time is able to destroy a person’s nature. In the drama Macbeth by William Shakespeare, the main character, Macbeth, becomes corrupt through power that he gains. The play shows that even someone who starts out like Macbeth and does not crave power, will do terrible things to gain authority and power.
In Of Mice And Men, violence affects every character in some way, whether they are the instigators or victims of it. Two characters who are developed through their involvement in acts of violence are Lennie and Curley. The fight between them is a major event in the book, and whilst both are fighting, the fight highlights the contrast between them. Curley’s actions are described with aggressive verbs - “slashed,” “attacked” - whilst Lennie’s are described with passive, innocent verbs that seem to fit his character. This choice of words for Lennie shows that whilst his attacks do far more damage than any of Curley’s he doesn’t deliberately use his power or strength for this purpose. The action that eventually crushes Curley’s hand is described as “reaching.” This can show the reader that Lennie’s instinctive reaction when he’s afraid is to “reach” or grab onto something, like he did with the girl’s dress in Weed, and does

Human’s desire is to control and dominate others through the use of power. However, the shifts and the notions of power can change as new people gain control. Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men illustrates the transient nature of power through the characters desire to control and dominate others.
Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" presents a dystopian society where suffering is seemingly eradicated through technological and societal advancements. However, beneath the facade of utopia lies a profound exploration of suffering, both physical and psychological. In this essay, we will delve into the theme of suffering as depicted in "Brave New World" and draw parallels to the complexities of suffering in the real world. In Huxley's dystopian world, suffering is eliminated through the suppression of individuality and emotions.
Everyone kills, and everyone eats. Not everyone eats what they kill, but these remain two of the most intimate forms of communing with our environment, whether we recognize them as such, or not. Almost 40 000 Americans are killed each year as the result of homicidal, accidental, and suicidal uses of guns; in all, Americans wielding guns intimidate, wound, and kill hundreds of thousands every year. These were the kinds of ideas impressed upon me as I grew up in my urban home: Guns were beasts, as were knives, arrows, spears, indeed anything could become a weapon if held in a particular way. We sprayed each other with the hose instead of water guns, and spent many long hours as a family "communing with nature" through long walks on the
Sometimes two stories with similar themes can be different types of fiction. “Hunters in the Snow” by Tobias Wolff makes the statement that when someone wants something desperately, like validation from others, they will manipulate others and lose their humanity in the process. “Hunters in the Snow” is about three hunters who are in a power struggle. They go out on a hunting trip, where the hunter on the bottom of the food chain, Tub, shoots the one at the top, Kenny, causing the power structure to flip, and the death of Kenny. “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell has a theme that states that through a person’s experiences, they will lose their humanity and morals. The story is about an experienced hunter, Rainsford, who washes ashore
In the novel Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, the predatory nature of human existence is a prevalent thematic topic. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck uses various encounters between the characters Lennie, Crooks, and Curley’s wife to express the predatory nature of human existence. Crooks and Curley’s wife are both provided with the opportunity to exercise their power over an individual who is weaker and more vulnerable than they are. When Crooks and Curley’s wife take this opportunity, they are showing that when the opportunity to use power arises, people will take the opportunity. People taking advantage of their power over someone else occurs frequently in society. As a child, I first began to experience the predatory nature of human existence when I was in the fourth grade and my best friend saw an opportunity to use her power over me and took it.
Though one could argue that Wolff’s “Hunter’s in the Snow” and Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game” share an aspect of higher insight that can be classified in literary fiction, Hunter’s in the Snow allows the reader to develop a deeper understanding of human nature by presenting three dynamic characters.
