The Power Of The American Dream

The American Dream can mean different things depending on who is asked. Some will answer it is the freedom of religion, class or race, others will claim it is about the ability to choose where they want to work, what they want to wear, or what’s for breakfast the next day.

When one talks about the American Dream, thoughts go to being happy and self-satisfied as an individual. It doesn’t portray following in others footsteps or becoming like one’s parents or grandparents. It allows a person to step out into world and find out who they are. It allows a person to become more than just another “chip off the block”. It allows a person to grow, succeed and transform into a person full of happiness and content due to the freedoms they are allowed. This is why many immigrants came to America. They wanted the freedom to drop everything that was burdening them in their homeland and become something new and prosperous. The American Dream takes a person’s determination and willingness to work toward their dreams and goals and gives them a chance to achieve it all. The American Dream is about the individual and the desires without these the goals will not be achieved.

Sometimes we tend to forget what a privilege it is to live and be raised in America where as some people would kill to be where most of us are today but American dream can be different depending on how you interpret it. However the definition tends to be around the same the American dream is that every US citizen should have the equal opportunities to achieve success and have prosperity through the hard work that they put in most people that try to have the American dream have determination and initiative examples of roadblocks that some people would have in trying to pursue their American dream is income mobility, unequal opportunity, and their zip code.

American dream is the dream to live a free life and do whatever someone wants. George and Lennie in Of Mice and Men have a dream. George and Lennie's dream is to do just that. They want to save their money to buy a house. They want a couple of acres, some cows, and pigs. All they want to is live off the fat of the land with no one telling them what to do. They want to make their own food and just live the like they want. That is a great example of the American dream. Most dreams consist on being free and doing whatever they want and that is what their dream had. The American dream can be different to anyone and this is a great example of one.

Some people say things like, “I’m going to America because of the opportunities it provides”. The “opportunities” they’re talking about are most often opportunities to make money. Though no one likes to admit it, money is definitely a big part of the American dream. The freedom that America provides can also be considered the American dream. The American dream can be viewed in a lot of ways to different people. I view it as a variety of things. When I imagine the American dream I think of having so much money I do not have to imagine twice about buying anything, I could have all the cars I ever wanted. Another thing I imagine is having all the Siberian Huskies I want so I can have a big sled dog team. Then I can save the gas in my cars so I can make less stops at the gas station. The last thing I think about is being able to skydive anytime I want to. However, there are also people who just want to have a proficient education and be able to have a family. What the “American Dream” means to me is having freedom, liberty, and rights. Having freedom is a privilege, our soldiers that are fighting for us in war give us freedom. We have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, press, assembly, etc. We are lucky to have people serve in war for our freedom and protection. Liberty gives us new opportunities and independence. Freedom and liberty come at costs, we have to fight for it. We Americans have rights as stated in the U.S. Constitution. As Americans we need to abide by the laws, rules, and rights.
