The human brain is capable of handling and performing even the most detailed tasks. Although scientists can’t fully and clearly explain what that the definition of dreaming is, observing, testing, and performing different practices, has given experts and scientists enough information to have a general idea of what is going on in the human brain while in this dream state. It is a way to travel into time or into a place that could never exist. Dreams can be a gateway to see your future, to what lies ahead or a way to look back on memories. Stage four of the sleep cycle is when dreaming occurs. It is the deepest sleep stage the body enters right before dreaming. During this stage, the bodies brain movement increases, as well as the body’s respirations. This stage is also known as the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage. The body’s brain activity, temperature, respiration, and eyes move in a rapid movement for about 90 minutes. Dr. Patricia Garfield stated, “When we dream, our central nervous system is going into an active, which it does periodically during our sleep. Nobody is quite sure why, by the way. Is it a testing of the system to see if everything is still working? We don’t quite know”. (Garfield, 2002) The body experiences several changes throughout the night as it shifts from stage to stage. As the body dreams, the bigger voluntary muscles of the body become paralyzed, which is why people don’t act out their dreams. The smaller muscles around the mouth, eyes, and fingers tend to twitch, accompanying from the central nervous system arousal. Paralysis of these muscles allows the body to fall into a deep sleep. As the body continues to remain and endure the dream state, the body’s heart rate, temperature, breathing and brain activity change throughout the night.
