Introduction: I have known about fairy tales since I was a little girl. I grew up watching all of the Disney movies. My dad would also read and tell my sister and me bedtime stories that were fairytales. When I was younger, I would dress up like princesses such as Ariel from “The Little Mermaid” and “Cinderella.” I have always loved fairy tales because they are magical and young girls like me looked up to the princesses and had crushes on the princes. I would love to know more about fairy tales and the authors who wrote them. Little girls even in 2013 grow up watching movies and learning about these princesses. After I chose to research fairy tales, I learned more about them, found authors who wrote them, and chose to read stories written by Charles Perrault. I was raised hearing fairy tales a certain way and I have remembered them from my childhood a specific way. After reading some of the stories rewritten by Charles Perrault, they were told a little bit differently than I remembered, but it was interesting hearing the stories told another way. I broke down the stories and filled out charts that had different elements of each story on them. After I read the fairy tales, I had to find an article on the Gale Student Resources in Context website. Reading the article I found and taking notes paragraph by paragraph really helped me to better understand fairy tales and how they relate to each other in different ways. Another interesting thing I did to learn more about fairy tales was interviewing my father. I asked him basic questions about fairy tales, and his answers were pretty close to what I would have expected them to be. He told me about how his parents and grandparents told him fairy tale stories and he grew up hearing them, just like I grew up hearing them from my parents and grandparents. Along with interviewing my father, there is nothing like watching a fairy tale while I was researching them to view them in a different light than I ever have before.
