Beowulf is an epic poem about the heroic journey of a great warrior named Beowulf, the king of the Geats. His desire was to reveal to others how strong and brave he was compared to any other monster. “There was no one else like him alive in his day, he was the mightiest man on earth, high born and powerful”. He signifies the true heroic character because he is willing to risk his life for his ideals. Beowulf defeats three horrific monsters, two of whom are descendants of Cain.

Beowulf is an epic poem that has been handed down orally for centuries, but was finally written down in the eighth century. It is the story of an epic hero, named Beowulf, who travels with his men, the Geats, to conquer the many beasts who terrorize the lands of the Danes. The scops describe Beowulf as “greater and stronger than anyone anywhere in this world”(110-111). This example shows one of many qualities that make Beowulf the epic hero that he is. He uses his strength to demonstrate both the dedication and bravery needed to bring peace and justice to the people who have been terrorized for such a long time. Cultural elements exemplified in Beowulf occur in the aspects of the mead hall, the warriors, and their belief system.

First of all, the monsters. The epic poems usually are created heroes who must fight various monsters so that they can achieve the ultimate honor and glory. The character Beowulf is no different from other heroes. Beowulf must fight three monsters: Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. These monsters represent those who do not make their social roles, some people who live apart from civilization and which also have no value.

He is the main character of his story, he has a main goal, he travels and fights with a group of people, and he accomplishes many valorous deeds; the values of the Anglo-Saxons are also shown through the actions of Beowulf, such as courage, loyalty, and fame. For example, when Beowulf heard a cry for help in a far off land, he answered. He fought larger than life monsters, and won. His exceptional strength proves his epic courage and heroism.

Beowulf ‘s confidence in his abilities and courage to carry out his mission exhibits how he could be considered an epic hero. When he first hears of the Danes’ plight with the monster Grendel, Beowulf wastes no time in “his plan to sail the swan’s road and seek out that king” who desperately needs assistance in his troubles (Heaney 201-202). He eagerly accepts his call to action, wasting no time in ensuring King Hrothgar of his “awesome strength” and exhibiting an unwavering self-assurance as he recalls how he “battled and bound five beasts” (Heaney 418-420). The first person point of view in Grendel emphasizes how Beowulf is superior, yet he shares some characteristics with Grendel. The third person point of view in Beowulf commends Beowulf for being a hero, but neglects to emphasize how his actions falsely represent his true selfishness. After considering the tone and point of view in Grendel by John Gardner and the Anglo-Saxon values showed in the translation of Beowulf by Seamus Heaney, Beowulf is not an epic hero because he sacrifices other Danes lives in order to kill Grendel and results to use of revenge.

The epic poem Beowulf describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-Saxon times. The hero, Beowulf, is a seemingly invincible person with all the extraordinary traits required of an Anglo Saxon hero. He is able to use his super-human physical strength and courage to put his people before himself. He encounters many monsters and horrible beasts, but he never fears the threat of death. His leadership skills are outstanding and he is even able to boast about all his achievements. Beowulf is the ultimate epic hero who risks his life countless times for glory which to him meant eternal life.

“They said that of all the kings upon the earth he was the man most gracious and fair-minded, kindest to the Geats’ tribute to Beowulf after his death.” Beowulf has so many characteristics that only made him a good, loyal, and courageous hero, but also he is a wonderful epic hero. He is a great leader to his men, he is brave no matter what, and he would risk his life for people he didn’t even know and knew, and also for his men. Beowulf shows astonishing characteristics of an epic hero in the poem. Beowulf was significant and glorified by the people and society, he had superior and superhuman strength and intelligence, and he risked his life for glory and the society, and was a strong and responsible leader.
