Another occasion, where Odysseus pride was a huge factor of his reaction was when he was in Phaiakians. Odysseus was at an athletic event, where many young mean were taking part in different activities. Prince Loadames, who won one of the activities invites Odysseus to take part in the games. Odysseus refuses, and the prince taunts Odysseus, by saying that he does not look like he is an athletic person. That comment enrages Odysseus, who takes part of the discus game and throws it farther than anyone else. After, his big victory Odysseus, which no one know is him because he is wearing a disguise screams, “Now come alongside that one, lads The next I’ll send as far, I think, or farther. Anyone else on edge for competition try me know” ( Ch. …show more content…
Odysseus man went to steal food from the Kyklops cave, but Polyphemus returns and ate two of Odysseus men. He keep all of the men including Odysseus hostage in his cave to eat later on. That same day Odysseus give wine to Polyphemus and tells him that his name was Nobody. Polyphemus became drunk and fell sleep, which allowed Odysseus and his men to stab him in the eye. When Polyphemus woke up he started screaming and he said that nobody did it, which made the Kyklops believe that it was a self-inflicted injury. The next day all of the men were able to escape hiding underneath the sheep’s. As Odysseus was escaping he said, “Kyklops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithika” (Ch. 9, Lines 548-552.) Odysseus so proud of what he has done told Polyphemus who he was, which cause Polyphemus to as his father to put a curse to Odysseus which was to let him go home is it was his destiny, but make him go through a long and harsh journey. Odysseus pride and impulsiveness made him revealed his through identity, which caused him to go though many obstacles to finally go
In The Odyssey- Part II, Odysseus with the help of his son and loyal servants. They slaughtered all the suitors and maids for the following: they tried to take advantage of his goods, they tried to marry his wife continuously, and destroyed his house. The slaughter of many of the suitors may have been brutal, but it was necessary.
When someone says the word leader, the first thought is someone who is considerate of others, smart, and has good communication. In Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, Odysseus is an epic hero who goes on a journey in order to get back home, but doing so proves he is not a great leader. Although Odysseus may have gotten himself home, he got none of his men home, which shows he is a horrible leader. Odysseus is a terrible leader because he gets all of his men killed on his trip back home, he exposes himself and his men to the Cyclops, which puts him and his men in danger, and he has horrible communication which causes his ship to get farther from home. Since Odysseus does all of this, it proves he is a horrific leader. Odysseus thinks of himself
Pride is a good thing and a bad thing. Odysseus’s greatest problem was pride. When Odysseus tried to return home, there was an island, therefore they stopped looking for food. This island was the home of Cyclops's. Odysseus along with his men infuriated a Cyclops named Polyphemus. Odysseus along with his men ran back to the ship, it was then he had let pride immerse him. Polyphemus ended up asking his father Poseidon for revenge.“The rate of major earthquakes--those with a magnitude higher than 7.0-- more than doubled in the first quarter of 2014 compared with the average since 1979”(Yan and Berlinger 2). Just alike the earthquakes doubling in the amount, Odysseus will encounter more storms than usual. Odysseus was extremely smart at first
The definition for leader is the person who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. This definition defines odysseus from The Odyssey because he is a person who commands a small army through Danger and survives. He keeps his men alive because he has analytical skills he takes the tasks at hand to his full attention and takes steps until the task is complete this helps him when he escapes the clutches of a cyclops and saves his men.
In Book VIII, King Alkinoos is intent on helping Odysseus on his journey, so he holds a special meeting. During this meeting there is competition to entertain Odysseus. After Odysseus declines competition, as he is maturer in his older years, he is insulted by one of the king?s men. ??The reason being, as I see it, friend, you never learned a sport, and have no skill in any of the contests of fighting men? (Book 8). Odysseus then steps up and breaks the record for throwing a disc. ?Anyone else for an edge for competition try me now? (Book 8). This shows a common characteristic of men today, we just can?t turn down a challenge. Although I cannot blame him there are only so many ways he can show and prove his greatness to others.
In the novel, The Odyssey, the main character Odysseus is portrayed as a leader who must overcome a multitude of challenges. He is similar to Oprah Winfrey because of the struggles she had to overcome to get where she is today. Odysseus and Oprah share similar qualities as leaders, heroes and renown role models because of their strong desire to never give up. They are different because of their way of thinking and dealing with situations. Although people think Oprah is a more significant hero than Odysseus because of his flawed nature, Odysseus and Oprah are both brazen leaders because of their ability to use words and actions to empower the people around them.
In the Odyssey, Odysseus exemplified strong leadership and outstanding noble qualities. Like Achilles, Odysseus carried some flaws at the beginning of the story. A strong case can be made that his biggest flaw as a character was pride as it caused him unnecessary risks that only delayed his journey and possibly endangered his men. This is evidently shown when Odysseus and his crew wander around in Polyphemos ' cave. After the confrontation with the Polyphemos, Odysseus and his men escaped by stabbing Polyphemos’ in the eye while he was asleep. Once Odysseus and his men were safe on board on their ship, Odysseus took it upon himself to reveal his true identity and proceeded to taunt Polyphemos. At
“ I drew it from the coals and my four fellows gave me a hand, lugging it near the Cyclops as more than natural force nerved them; straight forward they sprinted, lifted it, and rammed it deep in his crater eye”, (12). Odysseus came up with the brilliant idea to blind the Polyphemos, instead of killing him. He knew that if the men were to kill Polyphemus, they would never be able to remove the boulder from the opening of the cave. While under stress Odysseus was still able to think clearly and come up with an outstanding idea. Blinding the Cyclops wasn't the only good Idea the Odysseus came up with under pressure in the cave, when Polyphemus asked Odysseus for his name, Odysseus said, “ I shall tell you. My name is Nohbdy”, (12). Odysseus thinks about the effects of his actions.
When Odysseus becomes trapped in the Cyclops, Polyphemus’s, cave, he realizes that now is the time to use his strategy rather than strength. It all starts with his ‘libations’ to the Cyclops. Odysseus consistently gives Polyphemus wine “to top off the banquet of human flesh [he has] bolted down!” which is the crew members that Cyclops has eaten ( 9. 222). The most crucial part of Odysseus’s plan is when he tells Polyphemus his name is “Nobody- so my mother and father call me” (9. 223). This particular name that he tells Cyclops helps him escape the other cyclops on the island. Once they stab Polyphemus’s eye with a burning hot stick, the other cyclops wake up to ask him if anyone else is in there with him. Polyphemus, thinking that Odysseus’s name is actually ‘Nobody’, tells them that ‘Nobody’ is in there with him, While escaping death from the cyclops, Odysseus also blinds the cyclops, and saves the rest of his crew. Odysseus chose to use his strategy in place of trying to use his strength which would not have helped him escape. In this situation, strength is no use, seeing as the cyclops is ten times as strong as him.
When listening to several campaign rallies from Donald Trump, I believe his presidential personality leans toward active positive. Active positive presidents are “confident and flexible, they enjoy the exercise of power and do not take themselves too seriously, they emphasize the "rational mastery" of their environment, and power is used as a means to achieve beneficial results” (wolcottapusgov.blogspot.com).
During his journeys Odysseus often makes the mistake of bragging to his enemies but learns that doing this gives his enemies a chance to seek revenge against him. After leaving Troy, Odysseus attacks the
Most of the reason why Muslims face discrimination in New York is due to the past history of the city and country. Muslims have almost always faced discrimination in NYC, but after the terrorist attack of 9/11, Muslims have never faced more discrimination. When Islamophobic attacks cooled down, they were reignited by ISIS and other extremist attacks that have occurred in the last two years.
While the suitors sat and mocked him, he accomplished the task. Homer uses the epic simile, "Meantime wise Odysseus, when he had handled the great bow and scanned it closely, -even as one well-skilled to play the lyre and sing stretches with ease round its new peg a string, securing at each end the twisted sheep-gut; so without effort did Odysseus string the mighty bow...Great consternation came upon the suitors. All faces then changed color" (210), to describe the moment of honor. This is telling of Odysseus' agility because he saw the perfect timing to overcome the challenge in order to get a roused response from the suitors. This ability to think quickly and see the needs of the moment helps Odysseus seem more powerful than he may actually be.
Frightened by the large creature, Odysseus and his men scatter to the shadows of the cave before the large beast notices them. Directly after finishing his work, Polyphemus starts to poke at the fire in his cave, which was previously set by Odysseus and his shipmates. Once the fire flares up, Polyphemus notices Odysseus within the shadows, and without hesitation the gigantic creature questions who they men are, as well as where they’re from. This is when Odysseus begins speaking to the aforementioned creature, claiming his name to be Nohbdy, that he and his men are from Troy, and that their ship had crashed among the rocks of the island. After mentioning that his ship was broken up on the rocks, the mighty man picks up two of Odysseus’s men, bashes their heads in, then eats them whole, and goes to sleep. In the following morning, the cyclopes eats another two of Odysseus’s men. When the creature finally exits the cave, Odysseus looks to his
Odysseus has a sense of hubris that leads to adversity and causes him harm, he also has humility; however, the lack of balance between these emotions takes Odysseus through many tough obstacles. When Odysseus tricks Polyphemos, he does it logically, and he uses his mind and reason; however, his hubris comes out when he feels the need to expose his true identity thus leading to his difficulty to return to Ithaka and future problems. Odysseus’s men beg him to stop harassing the beast, but Odysseus has one other plan in mind when he says, “Kyklops / … Odysseus raider of cities, took your eye: / Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithaka!” (Homer 160). This provoking of Polyphemos that Odysseus displays is a cause for the pain Ithaka is going though, as well as personal and direct grieving directed at Odysseus and his immediate
