Another occasion, where Odysseus pride was a huge factor of his reaction was when he was in Phaiakians. Odysseus was at an athletic event, where many young mean were taking part in different activities. Prince Loadames, who won one of the activities invites Odysseus to take part in the games. Odysseus refuses, and the prince taunts Odysseus, by saying that he does not look like he is an athletic person. That comment enrages Odysseus, who takes part of the discus game and throws it farther than anyone else. After, his big victory Odysseus, which no one know is him because he is wearing a disguise screams, “Now come alongside that one, lads The next I’ll send as far, I think, or farther. Odysseus man went to steal food from the Kyklops cave, but Polyphemus returns and ate two of Odysseus men. He keep all of the men including Odysseus hostage in his cave to eat later on. That same day Odysseus give wine to Polyphemus and tells him that his name was Nobody. Polyphemus became drunk and fell sleep, which allowed Odysseus and his men to stab him in the eye. When Polyphemus woke up he started screaming and he said that nobody did it, which made the Kyklops believe that it was a self-inflicted injury. The next day all of the men were able to escape hiding underneath the sheep’s. As Odysseus was escaping he said, “Kyklops, if ever mortal man inquire how you were put to shame and blinded, tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye: Laertes’ son, whose home’s on Ithika” (Ch. 9, Lines 548-552.) Odysseus so proud of what he has done told Polyphemus who he was, which cause Polyphemus to as his father to put a curse to Odysseus which was to let him go home is it was his destiny, but make him go through a long and harsh journey.
