The Pros And Cons Of Abortion

There are two main political parties you can choose from in the United States, The Democrats and the Republicans. There are also third parties you can choose from. People can choose to be part of any party. We are divided by the left and right side on the political spectrum. The right are more conservative and the left are more liberal. These two political parties show philosophical differences through their viewpoints on major topics. With so many differences between the parties, finding topics or issues upon which constituents agree on can be difficult.

An issue that bothers me is abortions. While abortions are not frequently discussed in today’s news, due to the fact that they were made legal in 1973, by the Roe vs Wade case, abortions are still considered a ‘hot topic’ in today’s politics. This is a topic that gets me ‘fired up’, because my mother got pregnant with my oldest brother at a young age. When she was pregnant with him, many people encouraged her to get an abortion, so that she could pursue a future. Due to her pregnancy, my mother had to put a pause on her education, in order to raise my brother. Despite everything people told her, my mother still managed to pursue her education and career goals. Today, she is the mother of six children and is a registered nurse.

Abortion is when a pregnancy is ended by emptying the contents of the womb. An abortion is usually the result of an unwanted pregnancy and is performed in a hospital or an Abortion clinic.

This quote, by Martin Luther King Jr, represents how Martin Luther King Jr really feels about abortions, and how abortions relate back to the idea of slavery. As abortions are spreading all across the world many people have wondered if there are any positives to abortions? If there are not any positives to abortion then people may wonder, what are the negatives to abortions, and how do other people feel about abortions.

Abortion is a very controversial topic in today’s society. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks (Abortion). Many people have issues regarding this topic, while some support the idea. This paper will be covering the pros and cons, people’s attitudes, and how a researcher could possible change your perspective on the topic at hand.

Have you ever wondered why abortion is such a debated topic. How some politicians use it as a political ploy and others are completely against abortion? Also, if the supreme court says abortion is legal, why have many states added so many restrictions and rules to it. If abortion is legal, why does the government try so hard to make women feel like it isn’t. When did it become ok for the government tell women what and what not to do with our bodies and made our decisions for us? These new abortion restrictions makes it even harder for women to have an abortions, then it already is.

In the 45th Federalist Papers, James Madison wrote, “the powers delegated by the proposed Constitution to the federal government are few and defined. Those which are to remain in the state governments are numerous and indefinite.” In 1973, the Roe v. Wade ruling legalized abortion based on the constitutional right to privacy. This ruling declared abortion a right protected by the federal government as dictated by the Supremacy clause in Article VI of the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court's assertion of unlimited access to abortion as a federal concern violates states’ rights as it was wrongfully justified. Evidence offered by the fourteenth amendment, various court cases pertaining to abortion, and several philosophical arguments from renowned professors support the shift of the decision from federal to state power. Medical necessity is the only exception in which an individual should be granted unrestricted access to abortion.

The debate on whether or not to make abortion legal has been an ongoing conflict since Roe v Wade. On January 22,1973, The Supreme Court made abortion legal in the United States.This decision held that a woman, with her doctor, could request an abortion without legal restriction. State restrictions could be applied in later trimesters. There are usually two sides in this debate. Those who believe in pro life and the others that believe in pro choice. Although another question arises, is there a blurred line between being pro life and being pro choice. Are you able to be both or is the line straight and clear. I myself would have to be in the percentage of people that stay in the blurred lines not teetering on both sides but proudly standing on both.

Many will say that they are pro-life, while others would say they are pro-choice. When it comes down to abortion, there are many arguments and fights about which is right and which is wrong. There is no way to justify what is right and what is wrong because, abortion is neither right or wrong. There are so many factors into why someone would get an abortion. For instance, if they were raped and ended up pregnant, if they financially can’t support the child, or if they physically cannot have the child.

Mother Teresa once said, “And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another?” Based on this quote if abortion is legal, we should make murder legal as well because it is the same exact thing. Today the issue of abortion sparks many controversies, and the two major sides are pro-choice or pro-life. Even though some would say that an embryo is not a seperate being from the mother, women should not have the right to an abortion. Abortion should not be legal because it is murder, the fetuses feel pain during the procedure, and abortion causes psychological damage.

Roe was a single and pregnant woman who was battling the state of Texas where the law verbalized she was not sanctioned to have an abortion. Roe had won the case and abortion was legalized. Even though millions of abortions have been performed since 1973, the debate over whether it ever should have been legalized is vigorously argued by many Americans, as well as people of many other countries and cultures. The beliefs and opinions of these people are generally divided into two groups, those who call themselves pro-choice and those referring to themselves as pro-life. Pro-life argues that abortion should be legalized without the influence of regime or religion. Pro-life believes that unborn babies are human from the moment of conception and, ergo, abortion is immoral and efficaciously killing inculpable human beings. Albeit each side has valid points to argue, there is the long-term impact for the rights of the mother, the welfare of the child and the impact on society to consider. These factors pellucidly argue that abortion should remain licit and be resolute by the decision of the woman and the woman’s guardian.

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the procedures used to perform late term abortions are both safe and humane. It should be noted that there are mainly two procedures used, D&E(dilation and evacuation) and D&X (dilation and extraction). To understand why there is much debate about the humaneness of these two procedures, especially the D&X procedure, one has to comprehend what these procedures entail. “D&E is a procedure that may require, if the pregnancy is sufficiently advanced, the use of a forceps to dismember the fetus and extract it in pieces,”(Ballaro).
