Abstract
Active defense is a new approach that is being advocated in the United States and abroad. Other terms for active defense include “hacking back” and “striking back”. The concern with active defense are that some of the proposed activities are illegal and could result penalties for private companies and individuals.

1.0 Active Defense
Lately active defense in cyber security has been a very popular approach in protecting assets in cyberspace as well as mitigating the increase of cyber threats. Current defenses such as firewalls, antivirus, strong security policies and security patch updates aren’t sufficient enough to protect against the rapidly changing threat landscape. I do not believe private companies and individuals should be able to engage in active defense because of the unintended consequences there may be from doing so. For instance, you could damage a hijacked system of an innocent person, while the real attacker remains hidden. You would be the one paying the consequences for the damages. However, I do think it’s ok to use deception to obtain information on an attacker.
3.1 Pros & Cons
Thwarting off an attacker would be a pro of engaging in active defense. A few cons in engaging in active defense include active defense doesn’t permanently solve the overall problem; there is risks of hacking back with can escalate the very activity you are trying to discourage; and hacking back is illegal.
4.0 Conclusion
In conclusion, this paper discussed the popular topic of active defense and how traditional defenses aren’t very adequate anymore. Next this paper discussed honeypots used to deceive attackers.
