Anabolic steroids are a very controversial issue, commonly covered in the mainstream media of today. ‘Anabolic steroid’ is the common name for a synthetic version of the male sex hormone testosterone, although the full terminology of these are androgenic-anabolic steroids. Anabolic being the synthesis of new muscles and androgenic meaning a boost of male sexual characteristics (National Institute of Drug Abuse, 2012). Most commonly utilized by amateur body-builders or just people trying to bulk up, the synthetic testosterone is banned in all levels of sporting competition, for quite blatantly giving an unfair physical advantage to the user. Anabolic steroids are frequently identified as the most effective muscle gaining supplements around, although studies have shown how they can have negative effects over long periods of time, both physically and socially, indicating reasons why the potentially dangerous supplements is illegal. Both men and women who regularly use gym facilities or find another effective means of working out, especially those that are trying to put on more general muscle mass, will rightfully argue that use of steroids is by far the most efficient method to do so. Anabolic steroids cut out fat, allow for more oxygen to reach the muscles and make room for more pure muscle to grow (Fahey, T.D. 1998). Socially they can enhance both the performance and aesthetic appearance of the user, giving the user a new found confidence which can help them out in all areas of life and interaction with other people. Sexual arousal and performance is also significantly boosted through the use of steroids, being a positive for anyone in a steady relationship. These can be attractive propositions to many younger adults and will have them supporting the legal use of these hormone
