Animals testing has become a cruel and repetitive method in the cosmetic and medical industry. Not only is the practice inhumane, but is also argued by many researchers and scientist to be ineffective. Millions of animals are killed every year in the United States because of animal testing. The United Kingdom, New Zealand and Turkey have passed laws in the last decade protecting animals from the unnecessary torture of lab testing. The United states needs to follow suite, enforcing improved laws banning cosmetic and medical animal testing. The use of animals in labs and research is a problem that has been happening for thousands of years, animals have been used for testing the safety of food and chemicals. Records as far back as 500 B.C. show animal welfare has been a low priority in human evolution. The testing researchers do on animals reacts differently on humans; consequently, they waste millions of dollars, time, and innocent lives. In the last century, modern science has advanced rapidly causing life expectancy statistics to rise and making simple human tasks obsolete. Alternative testing methods have been developed and can replace the needs for animal experiments. Testing where human cells are used have a more accurate output when testing cosmetics and medicine. Human volunteers are a highly demanded option, companies pay for the tests and have laws of consent to protect the company. Human testing is one of the best options, doses are administered in small
It is not often that one sees the gruesome ways of animal experimentation in person. In short, it is the use of non-human animals in labs to find variables that affect the behavior of the human biological system (Google). Many people-like the PETA organization or the Humane Society-oppose these practices, but even this opposition is not enough to stop testing from happening for things such as cosmetics testing, chimpanzee experimentation, and genetically engineered farm animals. Although some of the testing produces positive results-such as a drug working-it is at the expense of millions of tortured animals; therefore, a simple solution would be to prohibit the use of animals in research.
This is an annotated bibliography of animal testing and research to see if it’s morally justified. There are many opinions on the results and the entire process that it takes to test or experiment a cosmetic product or a medicine on an animal. There are many alternatives and benefits to animal testing but is it really justified? Or could animals be in potential danger.
Each year, thousands of animals are brutally tortured in laboratories, in the name of cosmetic research. A movement to ban animal testing for cosmetic purposes has been gaining popularity, with many companies hopping on the bandwagon against this research. New alternatives have been developed to eliminate the necessity to test on animals. This is only a small beginning of what is necessary to end these immoral acts. Animal testing in cosmetics is useless and cruel, and can be accomplished by other methods of research to end the suffering of animals.
Animal testing can go from good thing to a terrible thing in a matter of seconds. Animal testing dates to ancient Greece in 300 B.C. Greek philosophers and scientists practiced on animals to find scientific solutions and medical cures. The benefits of animal testing include pacemakers for heart disease, vaccines, and treating conditions such as a brain injury. However, the downside of animal testing is that it is cruel to the animals, can have misleading results, and ninety-five percent of animals are not protected by the Animal Welfare Act. Also, breakthrough results have been made without animals and alternative animal testing is cheaper than using animals for experimentation.
Numerous years ago, animal testing was started to help humans obtain information. The process of testing on animals is, quite possibly, one of the most disturbing experiments ever performed. Many cosmetics and personal care products are manufactured every year and put into the market
Disputes on the concept of animal testing are seen all around the world in today’s society. People who are arguing in spite of the animals’ favors are called animal rights activists. Through the animal rights activists’ points, they create many important reasons for the fact of why animals should not be tested on. Although many people may support animal testing for commercial or scientific aspects, it has serious negative effects on animals for minimal human benefits. There are several features of animal experimentation that people need to have awareness of such as, animal cruelty and alternatives for testing, experimentation in the cosmetics industry and its failures, and what one can do to make a difference to prove that it is morally wrong.
Because animal testing is starting to take a more distinctly negative response in today’s society, companies are searching for an alternative. Alternatives are going to be the future of animal testing; the world today is so technologically advanced that soon, society is going to be able to put animal testing to an end. There are already mandated requirements in place to ensure that the testing is not done delicately that state the “principle of replacement, reduction and refinement of animal experiments is a legal requirement,” ( “About Animal Testing”). These rules reduce the amount of animal testing that occurs, but they do not come close to ending the practice of testing for cosmetic and research purposes. The most favored alternative that
Every year an estimated 26 million animals in the United Sates are tested on. Animals are used to test medical products, makeup, and many other everyday used products. The processes that these animals go through is very painful, and most times leave horrible side effects. Testing on these animals is cruel and inhumane.
Every year, millions of animals are subjected to experimentation at the hands of scientists, as well as, cosmetic chemists. Animals are often used in research to “advance the understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pharmacology” (Hajar 1). The use of animals in scientific research, or animal testing, is an extremely controversial practice; it has been largely debated since the seventeenth century. There is a large divide around the world concerning animal testing; while some find the practice harmless, others believe “animals are being exploited by research facilities and cosmetic companies all around the world” (Dunnuck 1). Even though it has proven to benefit humans in numerous ways, animal testing is slowly becoming more regulated and may eventually perish altogether.
Animal testing has a long history, with great minds such as Aristotle and Copernicus partaking in order to further their research. Scientists have used animals for biomedical research to help further their limited understanding of anatomy and physiology for thousands of years. It could be argued that the use of animal testing in the past has led to the current level of understanding and medical research that has saved many lives. However, the techniques used by Aristotle and others should now be considered antiquated. There is technology available today that makes animal testing unnecessary, but greed has caused major companies to continue testing on animals because it is less expensive than investing in cruelty-free methods. Animals are also used for cosmetic testing, to find which ingredients and makeup and cosmetics can cause irritation to consumers. Besides the fact that there are other methods available to find harmful ingredients, testing on animals to further societies own vanity is cruel and
The use of animal testing to conduct research on medical and pharmaceutical products is a divisive and controversial subject. The main arguments against animal testing are the inhume conditions in which animals are kept, and the suffering inflicted upon test subjects (Van der Zee; July 18, 2013). Despite the ethical issues with animal testing, an equally compelling argument can be made about the need for this practice to minimize risks to human test subjects. Throughout the years, animal research has been essential to the development of ground breaking medical discoveries such as penicillin even if such discoveries came at the expense of millions of animals that may have suffered or died during or because of these experiments (Lobanovska & Pilla, 2017). This paper intends to establish that despite its drawbacks, animal testing is a necessary evil for the sake of scientific progress.
Throughout the years, animal testing has played an essential role in leading to breakthrough discoveries in medicine, products, and cosmetics. Animal testing has been around since the fifth century in order to aid in studying the human body. Ever since, it has become the primary method for medical and scientific research; however, animal testing also raises several concerns. When it comes specifically to testing on animals, there is a chance the test results could be unreliable since they are inaccurate, which can not only waste money, but can delay the process for important cures and products. Each year across the United States hundreds of animals die from undergoing painful experiments to better improve the medical field. Although many great discoveries have come out of animal experimentation, alternative methods should be regulated due to the lack of results, high costs, and moral judgment.
Around the world, animal testing has been a controversy for many years. In the cosmetic and medical industry, doctors claim that animal testing is essential for life and solves many issues. Although animal testing may have helped the cosmetics industry and has provided opportunities, this form of experimenting has not been imperative to humanity. Even though animal testing has been helpful, it is no longer necessary due to the development of science, which provides humans with accurate and safer forms of testing that exclude cruelty.
More than 100 million animals are killed in the United States annually for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity-driven testing, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing. Animal testing in America has lasted for many years. It has long been viewed as a way to find cures for human diseases and test the safety of consumer products. However, animal testing is very costly and wastes time compared to other options. Many test subjects even die due to experiments. Human anatomy is also very different from animals’, so test results are not always accurate. Animal product testing should not be performed because it is more expensive and time consuming than other alternatives, ineffective as humans are not genetically parallel to test
Animal testing has long played a part in the science of testing, and it still plays a very important role in the medical world. Testing on animals in order to create a cure for AIDS is one thing, but testing on animals for human vanity is another. Animal testing is used to test the safety of a product. It has kept some very unsafe substances out of the cosmetic world. However, in this day in age, animal testing is not the only way to test the safety of a product. Animal testing in cosmetics has decreased over the years. However, it is still used by many companies in America. Animal testing is not only cruel, but it is also unnecessary in today’s advanced scientific world.
