Growing up in a bilingual family, there were many who were generally interested in the languages spoken in my house while others unfortunately sought out a more judgmental approach. Both my parents, born and raised in Nigeria. My Father came to the states on a student Visa in 1983 and brought my Mother over in 1996. They both decided early on that it would not be wise to teach my siblings and me our Igbo (our native language) because we now living n the U.S. At home English was spoken the most however, as a Kindergartener I distinctly remember speaking in Igbo to my parents. Unfortunately, as my English grew stronger my parent stopped speaking in Igbo around me as frequently, I now am no longer able to speak our native language at all. Although I was fluent in English I was forced to take ELD, English Learning Development. The assumption that both of my parents, who were born and raised in Nigeria, had not properly learned English themselves carried over to the speaking ability of the kids. Bilingualism has taken a controversial stand over the years as immigration in the U.S increases. Some believe bilingualism helps unite communities while others argue bilingualism separates cultures. Martin Espada In Martin Espada's essay, New Bathroom Policy at English High School, demonstrates bilingualism helps unites communities of people that fight against cultural discrimination. As Spanish immigration in the U.S increases, the rise of xenophobia from anti-bilinguals has taken a
Although being bilingual could keep you connected with your ancestors, war against bilingualism in the United States exists. Martin Espada illustrates the discrimination that bilingualism and Spanish speakers face daily. Espada explains; “ There are too many in this country who would amputate the Spanish tongue.” (4). The cultural aggression towards Spanish and other languages that aren’t English continue to rise. He elaborates, “The purists of English language is being corrupted from the bottom up: by “Spanglish,” by “Ebonics,” by all non-standard English as spoken by poor and working-class people. These dialects seek to obscure, rather than clarify; their intent is not to communicate, but to control.” (5). Espada points out that people in the United States devote their time to oppose bilingual and foreign language. The State House of Massachusetts attempted to make English the official language of the state, which would then act as a base for legal discrimination against Spanish and Latinos. Espada recalls an incident; “At META, we saw language discrimination cases on occasion. One case came from nearby Lynn, Massachusetts. A Latino parent called us and said; “Please come over to Lynn English High School. They have banned Spanish at lunchtime.” (7). The conclusion to ban Spanish at lunchtime came to a chief lunchroom aide overheard a few students speaking Spanish at lunch and thought that they talked about Anglos people among everyone. Many
It was great to know that world's number one highest IQ is in Korea. Unfortunately, I found my brain is just as normal, through the IQ test we did. I surprised that there is about 6800 languages around the world. Which means, there are more languages need to introduce to people. Also, only 6.3% of Americans are bilingual. Even the number of different languages people should speak is differ by cultures. Like in Korea, bilingual is general for us, since most of us did learn more than two languages when we were at high school. So I was pretty shocked that only that amount of Americans are bilingual. Overall, it was great
Learning a new language today is the key of several doors tomorrow. It involves an obvious amount of effort for anyone, either a child or an adult, but the younger the person, the easier it is – after all, does anyone remember learning to speak in his or her mother tongue? During childhood the brain is constantly creating new neurological connections, making the process of acquiring a new language effortless, but if we learn a language as a teenager or adult, the brain has to 'scramble' to find storage space somewhere else. So, in simple terms, learning languages as a child the brain absorbs them readily, after that it requires much harder work. This short period of time which occurs from birth until puberty (10 years) is called
A lot of time ago the bilingualism was considered to be something negative. In the year 1928 the International Conference took place on the Bilingualism in Luxembourg (Vila I: 1983: 4). To her(it) there came a set of specialists that in those years it(he,she) was working on the matter. The questions that were done are the same that nowadays, ninety years later, we continue appearing: which are the effects of the bilingualism on the general intelligence, on the activity, the character? Which are the advantages and the disadvantages of the bilingual regime? What is the most favorable time to begin your learning? The answers were unanimous and the majority of those present expressed the influence refusal bilingualism exerted on the intellectual and personal development of the child. Why is concretised in 12 years the recommended age to start learning the L2. Fortunately nowadays public opinion
The choice of language is driving a wedge between Americans and Latinos. In one instance, Espada personally experiences this when he asks a man “¿Como estas?” and the man responds in an enraged manner and threatens to rip Espada’s tongue out for speaking to him in
According to Psychology Today, around eighteen percent of Americans are bilingual. While eighteen percent may seem like a small portion of the population, this translates to fifty one million Americans who speak a second language. The steady growth of bilingualism in America has made way for many debates surrounding the role of multiple languages in society and education. Martin Espada, a poet and advocate for the Spanish language, uses his works to defend the right of Latinos to speak their own language. He defines bilingualism as a link between people and culture, allowing them to adopt their cultural identities. Meanwhile, Richard Rodriguez holds a different viewpoint on the debate. According to Rodriguez, Spanish is a private language and English is a public one. Rodriguez portrays bilingualism as a pathway to public society, allowing social connections to take place. While the word itself simply means the ability to speak more than one language, the idea behind bilingualism exceeds this definition. Bilingualism allows people to preserve the language of their ancestors and tie them to their roots. Culture can be kept alive when bilingualism is present in our modern society.
The number of language-minority children in the public schools have increased tremendously over the last ten years. Bilingual Education has continued to grow relentlessly. The number of children who have enrolled in dual language (DL) programs only continues to increase. Truly though, are DL teachers ready to teach children in bilingual classrooms? Have these teachers received the appropriate training so that their instruction would work effectively for the bilingual children? According to Baker, the outcome of the staff professional development program should benefit the teachers by increasing “their understanding of second language acquisition” and developing “effective curriculum approaches in teaching language minority students as well being aware of the students’ language and cultural background (Baker, 2011).
We find that in the present. Bilingual education has a role and necessary in our life very seriously. Both the economy and the tourism industry. True that we have local language as our own, but in the same way. On the communication for business, we need to help to bring the middle language to make it easier for communication. We need for instill, speaking, reading and writing in at least one language in the universal language, such as United States, Australia and Singapore.
Bilingual refers to the ability of an individual to converse in two distinct languages. Bilingual education is carried out in schools in different languages. The US has become a home to many immigrants with every single ethnic group of immigrants speaking its own language from their native backgrounds. Thus, the immigrants are supposed to have full knowledge of English for them to settle well in the US. Hence, the schools in US usually give immigrant students’ opportunities to learn school content in two different languages which involves both native and secondary languages.
There have been many informative studies information regarding the advantages of learning two languages. Bilingualism is a continually growing issue in the United States. Being bilingual as a child enhances knowledge so steps taken to promote bilingual education are very important. Children are not exposed to bilingualism even though the benefits have been well established.
Being “different” today means a whole lot. It could start riots or debates no one is really equipped to handle. Everyone is “different” in their own way and shape but that won’t stop the movement for peace and equality. This also stands true to bilingualism. Many people in the world speak hundreds of different languages but English and Spanish are very prevalent in America. In order to find peace with these two conflicting languages one must find a medium that does not segregate others in a education and allows for others to live and function properly in society.
A bilingual means being able to speak two languages fluently. According to various scientific researches, it has been proved that being bilingual affects how the person thinks. Bilinguals tend to change the way they think and perceive the worldview as they change languages.
Prior to explaining bilingualism, the concept of language must be understood. At a fundamental level, language derives off one’s self expression and culture. Language does not only hold a function to communicate with another person; instead, language gives people an outlet for “not self expression alone but to make oneself understood by others.” (Rodriguez 50-51) Furthermore, one must not forget Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion, which simply translates into ‘each reaction has an equal and opposite reaction.’ that helps denote scientific and psychological views alike.’ Regarding language, as the positive reaction is to the negative reaction, culture and self expression is to ignorance and cultural oppression. Language takes the form as a double edged sword, with the initial edge building connections and the opposite pushing a gap between
The struggles of learning a new language often overshadow the added advantage of bilingualism; in a globalized English speaking world however, the need to acquire the tongue of the trade becomes more apparent. As an immigrant, my advantage of having access and support to learn English at a young age enabled me to embark on a smooth journey transitioning into bilingualism. However, had this opportunity come at a later, less malleable stage of my life, I would have surely been lost, like my parents in a limbo between cultures and stranded by language. A debate surrounded by both political and ethnic tensions, the argument over bilingualism and the enforcement of English education creates a polarizing split in opinions. Although Richard Rodriguez and Martin Espada shares the common similarity of bilingualism, their arguments reveal two uniquely different views influenced by their opposing backgrounds.
If only one knew that bilingualism helps the brain in many different ways, perhaps they would've kept watching Dora when they were younger. Bilingualism is the ability to speak two languages. The world is filled with many different cultures that have been widespread throughout the entire globe since the existence and development of the earliest of languages. During this time, nations would come in contact with one another (mostly by surprise and force) and cultures would soon be jumbled up with other cultures. Because of this, it was normal for many to be brought up in an environment with multiple languages being used. This is very prevalent in areas such as Europe, Africa, and Asia where there are many neighboring countries near each other’s borders. Here in the United States, there are many languages from foreign countries ranging from Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese, being spoken from those who have immigrated to the states. It can be very helpful and useful to learn a second language in order to communicate with other people from foreign countries that still aren’t familiar with the native English language. Other than this, becoming bilingual comes with a handful of benefits for the brain. As a result of learning a new language, one can find improvements in brain functionality such as decision making and focus, the regression of diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer’s, and also an improved perception. These can help with mental stability and making sure that the
