1329 Words6 Pages
In today’s society, especially with young adults, binge drinking is prevalent. In both high school and colleges, students are drinking underage and binge drinking. This issue is becoming a serious problem that is affecting young people. It is becoming normal for students to drink underage in schools with no repercussions. It is known that crimes are more likely to happen with the intake of alcohol and that it can bring about unsafe situations. Binge drinking is causing problems not only in the individual’s life, but also in schools and in society. During a study conducted by the CDC it showed that “people aged 12 to 20 years drink 11% of all alcohol consumed in the United States. More than 90% of this alcohol is consumed in the form of binge drinks”(CDC-Underage drinking, par. 1. 2016). Underage drinkers are a prominent part of drinking in the U.S. even though it is a illegal activity for them. A big problem with this is not only that they are drinking illegally, but that it is mostly binge drinking that happens with underage drinking. Binge drinking can cause many problems in an individual's life such as “Disruption of normal growth and sexual development” or “Changes in brain development that may have lifelong effects”(CDC-Underage drinking, par. 1. 2016). These sorts of problems are not short term problems but may affect an individual for long periods of time. The problems do not stop with an individual’s personal problems, but also affect people around the individual. Carla T. Main states in her article the dangers students face when drinking “among the 8 million college students in the United States surveyed in one study year, more than 2 million drove under the influence of alcohol and more than 3 million rode in cars with drivers who had been drinking. Eight percent of students — 474,000 — have unprotected consensual sex each year because they have been drinking (Main, par. 13. 2009). The effects of drinking have shown that they can cause students to do dangerous things that put others in danger. The issue of binge drinking is putting many people at risk for harmful activity. Binge drinking is not just about underage drinking, binge drinking impairs people's reasoning and decision making.
