Those in power, who believe climate change is a myth, are dangerous for humankind, the environment, and the future as well. Specifically focusing on Trump, who has been in office for a few days, and those he choose to be in various government positions, together, they have already done more damage than good towards the environment. The decisions Trump, and Scott Pruitt (head of the Environmental Protection Agency) made with freezing the EPA's aid negatively affects poverty-stricken areas, like Flint, Michigan. By making drastic decisions without even considering those in America without clean drinking water, highlights that not only is the environment neglected, but also helpless people. While the denial of climate change is present, environmental racism is at work as well.
Monica Judge wrote an article entitled "Flint Mich., left wondering how Trump's EPA freeze will impact the $100,000,000 it was promised in grant aid" for The Root, while

Under President Obama, even as he signed various documents to give aid to Flint, for them to receive it, they had to complete a grant application from the state Department of Environmental Quality. At the present moment, that money can’t be touched, nor can the EPA update the public on what’s going on. Flint residents are still drinking and using bottled water to get through the day. Now under Trump, the water crisis isn’t being treated as a serious issue. When dealing with people’s livelihood, time is of the essence, thus such actions are a step back in the wrong direction. This freeze is said to be temporary, but by doing so and not telling the public the plan for moving forward does nothing to help calm people whose lives are in danger. Judge notes that Trump “has yet to outline a plan to help the city get clean drinking water after what has becomes a federally recognized drinking-water
Who knew that Flints water could be deadly? Everyone should be allowed to have the same clean water to bathe in, drink, cook with, and to have fun in. Unfortunately, residents in Flint could not do this for quite some time. These residents were bathing and drinking from this water before the founding of high lead levels in it. Not only was it because of the high lead levels, but the pipes were very old as well. Due to actions made by the city council this caused a lot of problems for the residents in the city of Flint. This effected children, pregnant women, and the elderly the most. Many lawsuits were filed against the city of Flint. It was so serious to the point that Governor Snyder had to declare a state of emergency. This took place January 5th of 2016. High levels of lead in the water and old pipes lead to lawsuits, the sickness of Flint residents, and the city of Flint not doing their job.
On December 3rd, 2015, the mayor of Flint, MI Karen Weaver declared a state of emergency because of the high levels of lead in the water supply. Two weeks later President Obama directed FEMA to help provide equipment and resources to the citizens affected, including providing bottled water and local water stations around the city. On March 21st, 2016, Governor Rick Snyder came out with an outline that addresses the agencies goal to help fix the crisis. It focused on providing professional support for children under 6 with elevated lead levels, replacing water fixtures in public facilities, replacing the city’s 8,000 lead service lines, and increasing resources for schools. (Michigan.gov. 2017). Through April to July 2016, nine state officials and employees face criminal
An attempt to save money by changing water sources by an indifferent government caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages, negative health effects, and a total loss in faith in the government of Michigan. Although measures have been taken to mitigate these problems, their effects have already marred the city of Flint and its
The contamination began in April 2014 after the source of the town’s water supply was switched from Lake Huron to the Flint river in order to reduce governmental costs. This was done despite the fact that the Flint River had a strong history of pollution. Among this pollution included car parts, a dead body, and high levels of chemicals. (Semules par 5). Once the pipes were switched there were several complaints of the water having a foul smell and metallic taste (Foley par 4). In the beggining the government denied that anything was wrong despite the fact that lab examinations of the water proved otherwise. Two years after the Flint water crisis gained media attention, the Senate passed a bill that would provide Flint residents with water, but this is
The Flint Water Crisis has quickly joined the ranks of Jimmy Hoffa’s disappearance, Kwame Kilpatrick, and the state of Michigan’s highways as nationally televised disappointments to come out of Michigan. This paper will look at the facts surrounding the causes, current situation, and remedies for the Crisis while also confronting the ethical and unethical acts of key figures associated with the Crisis.
Flint water crisis has been a low key story that did flush out into mainstream media until recently in early 2016 when President Baraka Obama declared this as a federal state of emergency. This crisis began in April 2014 when Flint’s water supply had been switch from Lake Huron, Detroit’s water system, to the Flint River which has high rates of contamination (Craven and Tynes 2016). After many complaints and petitions to switch the water supply back to Lake Huron’s water, the water source was still not switch over, because the river was claimed “safe” by the white people who held power. However, when the switch was made, the water pipes made of lead are already damaged and contaminated. Leading poisoning in children became a serious issue as many children began to show signs of poisoning and a chance for them to get Legionnaire’s disease. Surprisingly enough, when searching up “Flint Water Crisis”, there was no article that listed race as a potential factor into this decision of switching water supplies, until the addition of “racism” to the search bar to find many articles on this case. The reason to switch water supplies seems to be just saving 15 million dollars (Martinez 2016). However, Flint is a heavily populated black community, more than 57% are black, and Flint is about 40 % poor (United States Census 2016). Therefore, Flint water crisis is the intersection of race, poverty, money and power of a current society that believes in colorblindness and that residential
The Flint water crisis is an issue that has been plaguing the state of Michigan for over two years and has no feasible end in sight. The neglect of various government officials and employees has culminated in a public health danger for thousands of Michigan residents, by way of consumption of water with high levels of lead. Though the individuals deemed responsible for this deplorable situation have lost or resigned from their positions, and some criminal charges have been brought about, there is still a lot that has to be done to try and repair the damage that they did.
However, rather than try to deal with the problems that were being brought to the government’s attention, the Snyder administration covered up the problems and discredited the scientists or doctors that tried to warn people of the problems. There have been multiple credible studies involving Flint’s water crisis. For example, a doctor performed blood tests on children in the Flint area and uncovered a significant increase in the number of children who had increased levels of lead in their blood. She immediately brought her findings to the attention of various agencies in the Snyder Administration but she was largely ignored. Another researcher came to Flint to get a sample of water; he placed a nail in the water and after a week the nail began to rust immediately. He brought his document and proof to the Governor administration and this person, yet again, was discredited and marginalized. Meanwhile, one of the largest manufacturing companies in the world, whose Flint manufacturing plant refused to use the water because it caused engine parts to corrode. Despite many examples of significant problems with the water in Flint, Governor Snyder dismissed the problem until children were being diagnosed with lead poison that when he figured it was time to address the
“The scale of government neglect in the water crisis in Flint, Michigan , could place the city along some of most infamous environmental disasters in U.S. history”-Lenny Bernstein.
There currently is a problem in the US with the government and how they cut corners with the water problem in Flint, Michigan. About two years ago, Michigan’s government decided they would save money by switching the water supply in Flint, Michigan. Before, Flint was getting their water from Lake Huron. Now, they are getting their water from the Flint River, known by it’s filth through the people of Flint. When reporters interviewed long-time residents of Flint they were shocked at the decision. The decision was supposed to be temporary, it wasn’t planned for it to go on for almost two years. Soon after the switch, the people of Flint saw the water didn’t look, smell, or taste right. It was almost as if the water was brown and you could see the dirt in it. Most people thought it was sewage but it turn out to be iron. The Flint River is highly contaminated, 19 times more so than Lake Huron. The state Department of Environmental Quality wasn’t treating the river so, the water was building up iron which caused the water to turn brown. The water was worse than it seemed, half the service line to homes in Flint are made of lead because the water wasn’t treated like it was supposed to be. The lead got into the water and mixed with the iron. The fire stations are helping with providing free bottled water and water filters for the homes. The fire stations also gave out lead testing kits
Background: Flint had several types of industries operating out of its city limit for most part of the last century. By the end of last century Flint had lost several businesses which led to high rate of unemployment and loss of government revenue which, in turn, led to a failure to provide services to its residents. In 2011 Michigan governor Rick Snyder appointed an emergency financial manager to handle Flint’s budget. Ever since Michigan took over Flint’s beleaguered finances in 2011, it has been trying to cut costs whenever possible.
When people who lived in the city say they realized something was wrong the big guys kept saying there was nothing wrong and put it off for a whole month. President Obama had to claim a federal state of emergency on Flint, Michigan in 2014 because of the water that has been polluted by toxins and lead, but by the time the city officials realized something was wrong the pipes were already in too much damage (Kennedy/ npr). The City of flint is forty percent poor African American people, and this has put them in a giant crisis and when everything went down the people of Flint, Michigan went on strike (Kennedy/ npr). The polluted water was not fixed until April 6, 2018, this crisis lasted over four
The Flint water crisis broke newsstands around September 2015. A town exposed to a poisonous level of lead from the drinking water. This was followed by previous problems they have experienced since the switch of water sources in 2014, to save money. The history of the Flint water crisis is complicated and made so by small governmental agencies. The trial for this tragedy is still on going because of the lack of clarity. (Lin) In my opinion Governor Snyder is part to blame.
On March 17, 2017, the EPA announced Flint has been awarded $100 million for water upgrades. By 2020 over 18,000 homes should have clean accessible drinking water. The lawsuit made over a year earlier also came to an agreement; the state of Michigan will also reward Flint with
Since providing free or low-cost health care for residents of Flint is not financially feasible, another possible solution the city could implement is removing from office those officials who knowingly caused this crisis and then replace them with ones who truly have the best interest of Flint residents at heart. The crisis began in 2013 as Ed Kurz, one of the new state-appointed emergency managers for Flint, and the present members of the Flint City Council voted to join the KWA pipeline, which, at this point, was still under construction (Wilson). The city council’s decision was thought to be based on the projected savings that KWA would earn the city in the long term. However, it was later revealed in an email from Sue McCormick, director of DSWD (Detroit Sewage and Water Department) that, “When compared over the 30 year horizon the DWSD
