Conservative Christianity is not a force of good for society because it favours heterosexual people and condemns the rights and equality of homosexual individuals. Some of the civil rights that are breached for homosexual individuals include the freedom of speech, equal job opportunities, and the right to engage in homosexual activity. In a GSS survey conducted by the National Opinion Research Center, a number of people were asked two questions. These questions asked their opinion on whether a homosexual person should be allowed to make a speech against churches and religion, and whether the homosexual person should be allowed to teach in a college or university. The Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19 of the Old Testament fiercely illustrates the consequences conservative Christians believe homosexuals should face if engaging in homosexual sex and promotes Tylor’s notion of religion as a force of ignorance. In the Destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah story, Abraham and two angels visit Abraham’s nephew, Lot. Upon arriving at Lot’s home, the angels call to Lot and ask him “where the men who had entered the house (were) that night.” The angels command that Lot bring the men out so that they can have intercourse with them. When Lot refuses to hand over the men, Lot is threatened as an alien to the city. In the end, the men he hid in the house are struck by an angry mob until they are blinded. The Sodom story was the earliest indication of hostility and condemnation to homosexual behaviour in the Old Testament. The angels act as the judge, jury, and system of justice to condemn the immoral homosexual behaviour. In the story, a man named Levite travels through Jerusalem with his concubine. When they arrive at Gibeah in Benjamite territory, they are offered hospitality by an old man. During the night, “the worst scoundrels” shouted to the old man and told him to “bring out he man who has gone into your house, for us to have intercourse with him.” In response, the owner of the house offers his virgin daughter and the concubine in replace of the man. So the daughter and the concubine are raped by the “scoundrels” all night long. As it was explicitly shown in the narrative, sexual violence towards women was considered to be more acceptable than the intercourse between men. This only demonstrates how profusely conservative Christians convict and fear homosexuality as well as strongly suggests that religion is not a force of good because it promotes inequality of individuals such as those who identify as
