The Pros And Cons Of Democracy

Democracy is defined as a government in which supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation, usually involving periodically-held free elections . Democracy, to me, means so much more than just a free election. It is the ability to have freedoms that most of the world does not and to achieve a life that is worth having. We have this ability through the many freedoms that democracy has given us, such as the ability to speak freely without fear of violence or imprisonment and our ability to own firearms for our self defense against a tyrannical government . These rights and freedoms , given to us by democracy, have even coined the phrase: the “American Dream”. The American Dream is the ideal that the government should protect each person's opportunity to pursue their own idea of happiness . Unfortunately, the American Dream is no longer alive and our democracy has come under attack. Our freedoms in America have been restricted in recent years. One of our most fundamental rights, our Second Amendment right, has come under fire and scrutiny. The second amendment states that the peoples right to bear arms shall not be infringed .
