The topic i am doing is about doping.Doping is getting more and more common among olympic athletes and professionals. This has raised the question that if a lot of athletes are now doing it, should we legalize it then? Should doping in athletics be allowed? Some will argue that Performance Enhancing Drugs harmful effects are exaggerated and the risks of doing so are the athletes decision to make,it’s their fault if they want to harm their own bodies. Drugs are part of the sports world just like how new training technologies and techniques are part of the evolution helping athletes improve in their field of work. Keeping athletes from using performance enhancing drugs in experts opinions would be counter productive and the efforts to remove performance enhancing drugs would apparently be unhelpful, unproductive and trying so would lead to failure. On the other side in my opinion, i think Performance enhancing drugs are very harmful and are sending the wrong message. The use of doping in athletics hurt the competition and should not be tolerated in sports, Here are my reasons why. My first reason is that Performance enhancing drugs are harmful and are proven to be disastrous, even in some cases can result in death. The most common performance enhancing drugs are anabolic steroids, androstenedione, human growth hormone, erythropoietin, diuretics, creatine and stimulants. Let me go through what some of these are. Anabolic steroids are a form of steroids that increase your
The name “performance enhancing drug” is a name that categorizes a long list of drugs and treatments, but only a few can add an impactful boost on an athlete’s abilities. Many of these drugs promote or increase the production of cells within the body, taking them to levels beyond what could actually be produced. Anabolic steroids and human growth hormone are the primary PEDs used in the sports world because of the positive effects they are known to produce. Anabolic steroids help the body 's muscle cells produce more protein, which increase muscle strength, and more ATP, which is the fuel muscles need and use. Human growth hormone is something already produced inside the body which promotes
These performance-enhancing drugs are unnatural, and therefore medically unethical. Subjecting your body to something harmful is never good and a poor way to treat yourself. It is medically wrong to use these drugs.
Performance Enhancing Drugs(PEDs) shouldn’t be used in sports, because of its adverse health consequences. According to an article called Performance-Enhancing Drugs Can Have Severe Long-Term Impact on Health: Expert, in the long term, PEDs can cause impotence, worsening acne, balding and “steroid rage.” This conveys that if athletes use PEDs there will be serious effects and severe consequence to their health. Also, the drugs aren't subject to government safety standards and could be impure or mislabeled.(Article: Performance-enhancing drugs: Know the risks?) Therefore, the illegal drugs and supplements that the athlete consume are dangerous, damaging and potentially deadly. The drug could be made out of something that gives you a disease or even kills you because it doesn’t meet the government safety
Athletes use performance enhancing drugs to boost their game. The professionals who use these drugs are ruining the integrity of the game. Many people don’t understand why professional athletes would go to such extreme measures to be better when they have already proven themselves. Athletes are just taking away from their natural ability by using these dangerous drugs. The risk of using performance enhancing drugs is a lot greater than the reward, because an athlete’s reputation could be tarnished and their career ruined. Money is one of the major reasons why players use them; if they perform at levels higher than what their natural abilities could do they will be offered a large sum of money.
The benefits of using some types of performance-enhancing drugs are obvious. Professional athletes have a very 'short shelf life' as competitors in most sports and must cash in on their talents as soon as possible. For Olympic athletes, the
Performance enhancers are very prominent in professional sports today. A lot of players are facing suspensions and other penalties for using them. The sport that gets scrutinized the most for this is Baseball. Many former users in the MLB (or formally the NABBP) have come out saying that they were using these drugs while playing. Some of these players are Jorge Sosa, Antonio Bastardo, and the famous Alex Rodriguez. Although these drugs have been prohibited, players are still finding ways around the tests which is why in some other countries they are legal so that no one player can have an unfair advantage.
Eugene Robinson from the Washington post once stated “Most fans watch sports…to see people unlike themselves perform extraordinary physical feats. The superhuman quality of professional athletes is precisely what Americans admire about them” (CITE) Drug testing was created to stop the use of performance enhancements as artificial stimulants for physical and mental enhancements. (CITE) Drugs which are used by athletes in all types of sports have many advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, laws were created to keep an equal playing field.
My first reason to not agree with performance enhancing drugs are because in most if not all schools and organizations have rules that strictly state that these performance enhancing drugs are completely prohibited. So since these schools and organizations have rules against the performance enhancing drugs already then I cannot see why people
Performance enhancing drugs, or steroids, are defined as substances used to improve physical performance. There are many types of steroidal performance enhancers. The first of these performance enhancing drugs are anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids are also known as androgen steroids, and they are used to increase the muscle mass and strength of a person. A natural anabolic steroid is testosterone, which your body naturally produces. Some athletes take straight testosterone which is another way to boost your athletic performance. This has the same effect as anabolic steroids, but it is natural and can be found within the body. Anabolic steroids are so effective and appealing to athletes, because they allow athletes to recover faster from a
Besides the long list of negative side effects that steroids bring, they also ruin the integrity of sports. Sports are all about working hard and striving through adversity in order to reach a goal. Steroids only give athletes a shortcut that is an easy way out to reaching that goal. Before performance enhancing drugs became a world wide phenomenon athletes were forced to use their only option of working out naturally and pushing themselves beyond their limits in order to be the best that they can be. Now a day’s, many athletes do not have the same dedication and work ethic to earn their results the old fashion and natural way. Whether or not the use of performance enhancing drugs should be allowed in sports should depend on the purpose and intentions of their use.
Did you know that around twenty two percent of suicide cases are related to drug use (“Effects…”)? Or that eighteen percent of family homicides are related to drug use (“Effects…”)? Steroids have been used in sports since the early olympics when athletes ate plants with natural growth hormones and that produce more testosterone (“Effects…”). Steroid use since then has changed. Drugs are now faster, more productive, and easier to obtain. This is good for patients who require these to survive, but are very dangerous to those with different intentions. Performance enhancing drugs are addictive, illegal, prevent growth, and can be very deadly to anyone, no matter the age.
Any type of artificial substance that an athlete takes can be considered as a Performance Enhancing Drug. There are several different classes and each one has a unique effects and side effects. Some of the classes Performance Enhancing Drugs that are commonly used are: lean mass builders, stimulants, painkillers, sedatives, diuretics, boosters, and masking drugs (Wikipedia). Within each of these types of P.E.D.’s there are different drugs.
As bad of a reputation as these performance enhancing drugs may have, there are many reasons to why they are very useful and impactful to one’s career. Many athletes want to be the best and will go the farthest
Out of the 21,849 drug tests during the 1968-2008 summer games there was 105 cases of positive drug tests (“Drugs and athletes”). Performance Enhancing Drugs can either be Stimulants, Anabolic-androgenic steroids, human growth hormones, and Erythropoientin (“Performance Enhancing”). PED’s improve your overall athletic performance. PED’ are harmful and can even be fatal. Athletes use these substances to gain an unfair advantage to become better than their opponent. Athletes who use PED’s violate the spirit of competition and makes it not fun to compete for players who respect the rules. Every year countless players take PED’s to give them an unfair boost that can harm them, it also does not show their true athleticism on the field.
One of the easiest methods to justify why consuming performance enhancing substances is wrong is the fact that it is forbidden. Once an individual accepts that he or she will be a part of a community that values particular rules, the respective person automatically agrees to respect those rules and to do everything in his or her power to make sure that fairness dominates the community as a whole. There are basically three arguments reinforcing this ide:
