Mya sat upright in her chair and ran her fingers, whose nails were glossed over with a vibrant pink, through her blonde, bobbed hair. I had learned this signal, which meant she was interested in starting up a conversation. However, she was never the best at bringing about a discussion, and so, instead, I cleared my throat and offered a question to her. “You’ve been attending that college for a couple months now,” I began, my hands now clasped around the warm mug containing the disappointing drink. “Have you thought of any idea of what major you may be interested in pursuing?” Mya glanced up with a delighted smirk on her face, more than likely because a conversation had been stirred. With a shake of her head, Mya explained to me that …show more content…
“Picking a major is a ‘major’ pain in the ass, Juliana. Although, I am sure you understand my pain. Tell me, have you come any closer to discovering what you’d like to do with your life?” She got me there. While Mya was currently attending the Haynes Community College to explore her options while also knocking out some gen-eds, I diverged from her path. Likewise to her, I was indecisive in regards to my future and had no intention of attending classes when I was still in the dark. This was not due to financial issues as many suspected, especially as my parents are offering to cover tuition and any other expenses, but rather an issue concerning avoiding a “mental overload” as I described it. I wasn’t exactly the best at managing schoolwork in high school, and so instead, while the majority of my graduating class is spreading across the United States to pursue careers, I had made the decision to take a year off from schooling and instead focusing on my side business of photography in the meantime. Simply enough, it was named “Juliana’s Photography,” a cheap service as I wasn’t the most talented person with Nikon, but I could provide half-decent graduation photos to those who resented the thought of paying top-dollar for something so insignificant as photographs that may live only in a scrapbook or on a house wall, and to my amazement, the business was doing rather well. In fact,
In the introduction to “The Omnivore’s Dilemma, Our National Eating Disorder,” author Michael Pollan argues that many American’s in today’s contemporary society have lost touch with where their food comes from and which foods actually are nutritious. We have become an unaware society and allowed our daily simple routine of eating healthy meals to become a complex mess of fear for being unhealthy. I feel that Pollan is making an effective argument in stating his beliefs and factual knowledge on the confused relationship our nation has with food by using factual knowledge and evidence to persuade the audience that he is credible.
Upon graduating high school, I had no clue what I wanted to do with my life. I didn’t want to be like a lot of my friends and use college as an excuse to party all night and be lazy all day. So I decided to apply for a full time position as a diesel mechanic at Utility Fleet Sales so that I could at least begin earning income. Soon after starting this position, I realized that I wanted more. I decided to attend night classes at Blinn community college while continuing to work full time. I had no idea on what degree I wanted to work towards, but for the first time in my life I began to enjoy school. As I finished my first year at Blinn and second year working as a technician, I was promoted to an inside parts associates. This position introduced me to inventory management, building relationships with customers, cost management and basic accounting. I really enjoyed applying the mechanical knowledge I learned from working as a technician, towards my new position of
Throughout my life as a child and teenager, I was told by my parents that they worked really hard to get to the safe town and community that we lived in. Growing up in Pacific Grove, California gave me lots opportunities that I didn’t even know I obtained. Unless it had happened to me personally, I didn’t really understand the full picture of what others had to go through. Having dyslexia, the only subject I felt I really excelled in was art. After high school, I still had no idea what I wanted to do for a career or even a major. Monterey Peninsula College has boosted my confidence by showing me that I can be and do much more. Two years ago I would never have guessed that I would be applying to the University of Washington.

Twenty-six years ago. I began the quest to find the perfect college. As I drove down the driveway of Bay Path College, I knew this was the college I was going to attend. I was drawn to the rural setting, the beautiful campus and the small academic community. My intent for life after high school was to get my associates degree, earn some money, then begin working toward my bachelor degree. In retrospect, I did not possess the confidence or drive needed to be a good student. I struggled for the next couple of years to earn my Associates degree, however was apprehensive to commit to the time or expense it would take to continue my education. After a very long break in schooling, I now approach education with a new mindset and ready to commit
I paused for a moment before dropping the next bomb. “I… don’t think I want to be a theatre major anymore.”
The article, “Building a $325,000 Burger, talked about Dr. Post and his work on in-vitro meat. His experiments are to make meat out of stem cell grown muscles. The idea for having in-vitro meat has many positive aspects, for example, it supports animal welfare, covers environmental issues, “greatly reduces water, land, and energy use, and emissions of methane and other greenhouse gases, compared with conventional raising of cattle or other livestock”. Since this cultured meat is made through stem cells, the cells can turn into any kind of tissue. If someone wanted muscle tissue or neural tissue, then he or she can access it.
A nutritionist is an individual whose work is to advise people on matters related to food and its nutritional impacts on health. Nutritionists are known by different names in different countries such as clinical nutritionist, nutrition scientist, sports nutritionist or the public health nutritionist. In some instances the terms nutritionist and dietitian are used interchangeably. However, there is a big difference between the two terms in the United State with the term nutritionist being less protected and can be used with anyone, while dietitians have to meet certain professional requirements.
“College? I never even thought about it.” To George, the idea of college seemed like something foreign and vague, like going to China or the Moon.
Carbohydrate is a nutrient essential for energy production and the prevention of ketosis, a state where the production of ketones exceeds metabolism. Protein is a nutrient essential for its components, amino acids. Fat is a nutrient which provides insulation, protection and energy for the body.
During the first week of class, four readings were assigned. One of the readings, “Food and Eating: Some Persisting Questions,” by Sidney Mintz, discusses the paradoxes of food. Although food seems like a straightforward concept, it is actually extremely complicated. According to Mintz, there are five paradoxes, including: the importance of food to one’s survival, yet we take it for granted, how people stick to their foodways, but are willing to change, whether the government should allow people to freely choose food or if they should protect the people through regulations, the difference in food meanings according to gender, and the morality of eating certain foods. All of these paradoxes give people questions to think about, making this an extremely philosophical look at food studies. It also mentions that food must be viewed through the cultural context that it is in, which became important in “The Old and New World Exchange”, by Mintz, and “Maize as a Culinary Mystery”, by Stanley Brandes. These discuss the diffusion of foods after 1492 in different ways. The Mintz reading gives an overview of all of the foods spread from the Americas to the Old World, and vice-a-versa, but does not go terribly in depth on the social changes and effects of specific foods. Brandes focuses on the cultural impact of specifically maize on the European diet, noticing that most Western Europeans shunned it. He studies the cultural implications of this, concluding that maize was not accepted
For a long time, I had little to no idea what I was going to major in. Sure, there had been “maybes” like veterinary science, history, and most recently, law, but none of them seemed completely appealing to me; I was intelligent in these classes but they were not anything I was particularly fond of. So I sat down and put on my thinking cap and sifted through what I am best at. Then, like ray of light, the truth became known – I am really good at talking.
This article gives a basic definition of bulimia, which states that it is the act of binge eating and then purging in a n effort to prevent weight gain. It also says that the physiological thinking behind this disorder has yet to be discovered. Over al the article and its context seem to be reliable it often refers to research and experiments that have been
Most significant urban areas on the planet are a part of various societies that are different to other. Diverse societies may support or disapprove of eating various foods by people who are part of their friend circle/group. Likewise eating various foods at various phases of an individual’s life might be effectively accepted or unaccepted by people. This is because of the advantages and threats of eating these types of foods at certain stages of life and in certain conditions. For instance, most societies won't favor drinking liquor when pregnant or during lactation. This is because of the unfriendly influences created by this beverage. Nutrition and foods may likewise be influenced by society, according to various beliefs with the particular
Food habits is about what food we eat, how we eat and why we eat it, depending of several factors linked to establish patterns and different manners across cultures. On the other hand, dietary behaviors are generally associated with dietary patterns related to selecting low-fat diets, which are not always related to good eating habits. With this in mind, people who make any kind of low fat diet, should be aware in when their eating habits and their dietary behavior are working in the same way to have a healthier nutrition and when not.
