Gautam 4 Kriti Gautam Professor Sherry Sharifian Federal Government 2305-71433 30 November 2017 Fake News and Real News In today’s world, fake news is prevalent all over the world. People need to be more aware of these news stories, so that they become more educated about what is happening around them. In 1998, a fake news story was published about an endangered species that doesn’t exist. The fact that many people thought this story to be true, exemplifies how uninformed the public is. This story was compared with a real story on the CNN website in order to examine the differences between real and fake news, which are discussed later in this paper.
The fake story talks about “The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus (Octopus paxarbolis) [that] can be found in the temperate rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula on the west coast of North America”, an endangered species that needs to be saved (Zapato). After further research, it was found that “the author, Lyle Zapato, was not an expert on the topic of this story” (Christopher). Also, the sources that are cited contain no concrete evidence for the existence of The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus, but instead have rumors about it. This story may conform to one’s bias, but there is a link that goes to a place that is different from what it is supposed to go to, which also hints that this story is not true. When reading, one should check to see if their biases are interfering with their ability to spot fake news. The title for this
“Information Literacy: It’s Become a Priority in an Era of Fake News” written by Shannon Najmabadi’s states how critical it is today to be able recognize the truth as lies have become a widespread as they are featured in many sources. Shannon recognizing this predicament is supported by a report by the Stanford University presenting the nerving truth that students are unable to find credible resources. Shannon therefor defines information literacy as the ability to find, evaluate, and use information as an important technique that needs more focus so people know how to gather honest sources. In support of Shannon she uses the lack of information literacy being taught, the change trying to be made, and her call for action as her hope for others
“I am not going to give you a question. You are fake news.” This is the now infamous response from President Donald Trump during his first press conference since taking office when asked “Sir, can you give us a chance to ask a question?” by CNN reporter Jim Acosta (Johnson, 2017). President Trump’s dismissal of Accosta sparked the colloquial usage of the term “fake news,” a phrase the current president uses to lambaste media sources who report stories that do not present a favorable impression of his presidency. However, true “fake news,” has existed for far longer than Donald Trump’s presidency and includes three main types: satire, biased reporting, and deliberate misinformation. Fake news has grown in quantity and now Americans across the country are expressing concerns about not being able to trust media sources once considered honest and reputable, along with having trouble distinguishing between real and fake news.
Tanner Lange Sherry Sharifan Government 2305-73431 4/11/18 The Dead Truth The purpose of the following article is to try and get the reader to take everything they see on the news with a grain of salt. With biased news running rampant through society, the “truth” is so far from the actual truth. In the following article I will discuss my opinions of biased news by comparing CNN and FOX.
Kishor Thapa English 102 Travon Godette 4-25-2018 Satire: controversies Satire has been one of the most debatable susceptible genre of comedy. The main aim of satire is to point out the negative aspect of a person or a group. Satire has been run from years in our society through various means like electronic medias. At any certain point any new joke may cause a lot of trouble. In recent year ‘The Onion’, an American Digital company received one of the heating moment through out country when they published a joke on twitter account stating 9-year-old actress Quvenzhané Wallis a cunt.
I don't know about you, but I'm getting pretty sick and tired of the crybabies who just can't accept that Mr. Trump won the election. They continually spread lies, hate, racism, sexism, and bigotry because they live in a fantasy bubble; and think that there is something they can do to change the results.
The Loch ness monster myth has been around for a very long time. Deep down in the depths of Loch Ness Lake, this monster has been averting capture and clear documentation from humans for over 80 years. Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it? This myth is a lot like the legend of Bigfoot. Although some may believe in the existence of Bigfoot, Bigfoot is not real because there is a lack of evidence, other theories, and it overall just isn’t logical. Therefore, Bigfoot is fake.
For example, several dubious or refuted photos are shown at an About.com website entitled "Did Pterosaurs Survive Extinction?", including the alleged pterosaur stumbling out of a broken rock, which they relate as a credible tale, and call "fascination."”
Mahesh Sapkota Professor Sharifian GOVT 2306-73432 April 11, 2018 Migration is not a crime An election is a significant factor for a candidate to determining their achievement. It's like a final exam to them, one with most vote passes the exam. Their result is determined by a platform that they or their party stand, who supports them, how effectively their slogan etcetera. 1 “The amount a candidate spends per vote is based on three variables: 2 how much a candidate fundraises, how much a candidate spends and, most importantly, how many votes a candidate receives (BHANDARI, ESSIG, MCCULLOUGH).” But sometimes no money amount is enough to buy winning votes. Because of advancement of the technology, the amount of spent on advertisement and other things has gone up. As a result, it increases the cost to run in the election.
The American populous needs to wake up and stop supporting someone whom they know to be corrupt, and if they are unable to see through the media's propaganda and lies then they are blind and ignorant, and certainly do not belong in the voting booth where their poor decision could influence our lives for at least four years with the election of Hillary Clinton as the next president of the United States. What we have seen with Hillary Clinton is a pattern in which she lies about things -- in some cases under oath -- and is completely untouchable by anyone because of her previous status as the secretary of state and the influence that she holds within our government as of this day. Many of her lies emanate from scandals; such as Chinagate, Travelgate,
Instead of tweeting about important issues that are related to current events, President Trump tweets about topics that make him appear unprofessional. For example, President Trump immediately went to twitter after SNL, a comedy sketch show, performed numerous satire pieces about his actions. He proclaimed that SNL was the worst show of its’ network, NBC. Furthermore, he said that the comedy show is not funny and that the cast is terrible, declaring it “bad television.” These comments from our President are alarming because a newly elected President should not be taking time out of his busy schedule to review a television show while some of the country is still struggling to adjust to his election. Tweets such as this cause the public
I totally agree with you that “some of the masses really are uninformed and easily manipulated” because they trusted the fake information on the social media. The good example is me. Last few years, my mom showed me an article of Dr. A (kind of) on the internet that if the male drink soy milk too much, they will be change in the sex to more girly. Also, if woman drink soy milk when they pregnancy, the baby boy will change the gender to baby girl also. I know it sound stupid, but I trusted it; therefore, I stop drink soy milk for coupe months after I realized the information is unreliable. SO, I think we have a lot of people like me out there. Therefore, the elites may make a lot of fake information to let the masses trust it,
Propaganda is a tool for manipulating and changing the opinions people. The bases of propaganda have come forth form the modes of persuasion, Ethos, Pathos and Logos.
The means of communication has certainly come a long way. With factors including the evolution of media, it is a known fact that false information can easily be broadcasted. Millennials of recent also tend to heavily rely on social media most of the time resulting in the wider spread of untruthfulness. This risk promotes both misunderstandings and possible tussles which is definitely something no one wants to take place. Although it is never truly known whether hoaxes were created on purpose or not, journalists should still remain authentic not only to the general public but also their careers and people should be more cautious in what they hear, see, and believe in.
As the world evolves and changes due to the explosion of technology, so does mankind's ways of intellectual comprehension of informative news. The present day of news has overemphasized the meaning of fake news; which represents any form of false information that is illustrated as factual news. That tends to spread throughout the internet and the media. Misinformed news has taken over the world in so many ways, such as the birth of satirical and sketchy news, the financial motivation to publish actual false news, and difficult to sustain news.
