People need to be more aware of these news stories, so that they become more educated about what is happening around them. In 1998, a fake news story was published about an endangered species that doesn’t exist. The fact that many people thought this story to be true, exemplifies how uninformed the public is. This story was compared with a real story on the CNN website in order to examine the differences between real and fake news, which are discussed later in this paper.
The fake story talks about “The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus (Octopus paxarbolis) [that] can be found in the temperate rainforests of the Olympic Peninsula on the west coast of North America”, an endangered species that needs to be saved (Zapato). After further research, it was found that “the author, Lyle Zapato, was not an expert on the topic of this story” (Christopher). Also, the sources that are cited contain no concrete evidence for the existence of The Pacific Northwest Tree Octopus, but instead have rumors about it. This story may conform to one’s bias, but there is a link that goes to a place that is different from what it is supposed to go to, which also hints that this story is not true.
