Scientist began to remove or add pieces of DNA from one organism to another, they would do this at a molecular level and would then recombine the genes. Most food eaten by people or animals has been genetically modified. The first GMO food was the Flavr Savr tomato. They made this tomato by combining genes from a tomato with the E. coli bacteria. They did this in hopes that the tomato would stay fresher longer, but was shortly taken off the market due to its bland flavor. Some people believe that GMO foods will help save the world from hunger by producing double the crop loads, and are just as safe as genetically modified drugs. There have been several studies about the safety of GMO foods. According to the article "Genetically Modified Foods Have Been Studied and Found Safe to Eat." By JoAnna Wendel stated that there was a research team in Italy who studied more than seventeen hundred studies about the safety to humans, animals, and the environment. The researchers found “little to no evidence” that GMOs were harmful. These results were surprising to the researchers from Italy because Italy’s government wasn’t that fond of GMOs.
