High school. We have all been there. Four years of our life (maybe more for some) that we will never get back. Some may have enjoyed every second those four years and others may have dreaded every single second they walked in those doors. High school is a time and place where you sit in class for seven hours a day are lectured about needless topics. Education is a very important time in ours lives, however, there are ways we could spend our education making it more useful so we are better prepared for the future. Most students think about graduating from high school from the very beginning, thinking that they will be well prepared and ready to take on the real world. They think that is is going to be totally different from grade school and they will have the options to take whatever classes they want that they feel are needed to be a successful adult but, little do they know that most of their time will be spent on frivolous classes. In Laura Moser’s article about being prepared for life after high school, she says, “according to one study, only 8 percent of recent graduates have taken a “foundational set of course they’d need to be both college- and career-ready.” (Moser, Laura) Eight percent is a small sliver of the graduating classes who feel prepared to take on the real world. That leaves ninety two percent of students who are thrown into life after high school and not knowing what they are in for. To graduate from high school in Illinois the requirements are: you
Growing up, parents, teachers, and elders always emphasize the importance of an education to the younger generations. High school students are pushed and encouraged towards college for the next big step in their life. By the time kids step into high school it’s drilled into their heads that to make something of oneself they need to pursue a college education. In reality, are high school graduates even prepared for the challenges that they will soon face? High schools are not preparing their kids for the “college experience” that in turns leaves them lacking the know-how they will need for the workforce.
From my experience, as a student myself, I can relate to the impression of being unprepared for life after high school. During my high school years, many teachers do not clarify the lesson and expect students to understand the materials by a certain time. Learning only half a chapter and must learned two chapters by the next day. Some schools, however, only cover subjects
The twelve years you spend of your life going to school, is about learning new things and preparing yourself for the real world. Towards the last four years of school, you start thinking about what you want to do after high school, you start taking classes that’s required for what you want to go into, looking at colleges where you can get your degree. College isn’t for everyone right after their done with High School. Other people don’t need college for what they’re going to do, they can just start there job right away. Some people that have no idea what they want to do might consider going into the military, then find something in any of the fields.
For some students, the question of what to do after high school may be a burden to even contemplate as it approaches quicker and quicker. The pressure to continue another four (or more) years of education after high school can be overwhelming considering twelve years of schooling has already been completed; why go right back to school again? When’s break time? Some people are simply just not ready for college and they know it, or at least until after they have had a long break or have had some time to recollect themselves. Technically speaking college isn’t for everyone, nor is it necessarily needed for a career. Luckily today, there are many other options that potential career seeking beings can get a head start on such as community colleges and trade/vocational schools. These alternatives to a four year college are considered to be a good start on a job (and maybe even a career). The best benefits of these alternatives involve the cost of attending, the student environment, and the degrees offered.
High school is always considered some of the best years of life. Students live with their families, see their friends almost everyday, and participate in the activities they love with the people they love. It has enough freedom for the student to decide how hard they will try, but it also has just the right amount of restrictions that parents can step in to make the student work. High school also gives students many opportunities to succeed and keep letting them try again if they fail. For example, a math teacher may allow a student to retake two test throughout a semester, but if the student proves that they are trying in the class then the teacher may allow them to retake a few more tests. Also, schoolwork is not tedious or lengthy,
One question that comes to mind when graduating high school is, “should I attend college?” For many graduates this question have a very obvious answer. A high school graduate may state that, “college is the best option if one is trying to get a higher level of education, and will help one compete for a higher paying job.” However, in my opinion most graduates do not consider the fact that going to college is a very big decision to make and that the schoolwork will not be easy. Going to college is not the best choice for every high school graduate because many students cannot handle college, colleges’ lower standards, and not all jobs require a college degree.
High school is one of the most important things to a student's life. It is the foundation
After graduating high school mostly everyone has both high hopes and dreams, people whom have high hopes for the career life ahead of them seem to run into manys different obstacles along the way. After graduating high school I finally came to a conclusion of what I wanted to do with my life. My senior year in high school not only did my hopes change multiple times they also changed tremendously. One of the biggest obstacles that I ran into or that I face everyday is my cell phone. My cell phone is my biggest issue when it comes to anything its almost like its impossible for me to put it down. With social media being as big as it is today my head seems to stay in either instagram or snapchat 98% of the day. rather than my phone I seem to run
The essay ‘Life After High School” by Annie Murphy Paul is about the effect of a persons high school experience on what they do later in life. Paul had been asked to be the commencement speaker at her old high schools graduation which made her wonder if our high school experience determines who people become as adults. To see both sides of the argument Paul interviewed some experts and read studies on the topic. Some of the research has shown that there some truth to the idea that high school has the ability to shape who we will become in the future. This includes research taken from the Wisconsin Longitudinal study, which is one of the largest and longest-running research project on the effect of high school. For example that jocks are in
High School Hell High school is the best or worst time in a person's young life. Everyone can agree that high school is a crazy place. For some people it was easy; they were popular or got good grades. For other people it was four years of torture. Other than the enjoyment of high school, what grade a student is in has a lot to do with it.
People say high school is some of the best years of life, but I know I will look back and disagree. For me, high school has been getting diagnosed with depression. High school has been losing friends. High school has been finding me.
There are the students who decide not to go to college and start a career instead. They enter true adult life right out of high school. Life for those students is not getting any better. From 1987 to 2007, average lifetime income for a high school graduate dropped by 20 percent while the average lifetime income for college graduates has raised by one percent (Davies). The value of a high school diploma is dropping. The knowledge gained in high school is not enough for a good paying job. For those looking to go on to a higher education are also unprepared. They are paying large amounts of money for college to learn what they should already know. This problem with young adults can be traced back to school before high school.
After one graduates from high school, they are thrown in to adult life. Adult life is scary, uncharted territory for most young adults. When we are thrown straight in to life without the proper life skills to conquer it, life can quickly become overwhelmingly stressful. In a 2014 study conducted of recent high school graduates, 83% of students reported some gaps in their education when asked how their high school education prepared them for life and, or, college. (Kirst) If high school students are leaving high school without skills such as basic communication, financial literacy, and social skills, we are breeding a generation of young adults who cannot properly care for themselves.
Today, many students are settling for jobs immediately out of high school instead of furthering their education in college. Students should consider how necessary college actually is for their lives in the future. It provides one with a significant amount of opportunities, a greater knowledge about their career plan, and a better sense of responsibility.
After high school, there are so many possible roads to take. Whether it be going into the military, college, work, and or travel the world there are many endless possibilities. All of the seniors that graduate will most likely continue there scholar career at some sort of college, which is a good choice to make because once the graduates know what they want to be they can go and pursue it at the college level. Even though college can be expensive it will be worth it in the end when you graduate with a degree and use it with your everyday lifestyle. People who choose to go to college right after high school and not have a gap year is the right choice because they can get their careers started and not behind a year, they don't spend extra money on travel expenses, and once people stop going to school they will lose the motivation to go back to college.
