We’ve finally made the move to Tucson and are getting ready to move into new office space in the next few weeks. I thought it would be interesting to share with some of my readers what we have discovered about Tucson as a place for small business and emerging technology businesses. First, it’s pretty well known nationally that the city of Tucson, and to some degree Pima County is not very embracing and welcoming when it comes to small business and technology businesses. There are a few exceptions to this and I want to point two of these at the very beginning. Thryve and StartUp Tucson are very hands-on and welcoming. These folks have a plan and great ideas. They deserve a lot of support. The reputation of Tucson for being not business friendly is well known. There are lots of folks who have left the Tucson area and migrated back east. They are quick to talk about the raw beauty of Southern Arizona and also talk about how terrible the business climate is in the area. Much of the blame seems to be around a very welfare centric government, higher than average union memberships, highest sales taxes and property taxes in the state of Arizona and an alarming lack of good leadership. It’s a common refrain among the folks I have met here who have migrated to the Tucson area that you either bring your job or …show more content…
Even with the University of Arizona in the city, Tucson shuns any venture supporting higher education. Grand Canyon University was very interested in building a major campus in Tucson. GCU is a private school that has a religious orientation. Building a campus in Tucson would have meant hundreds of good paying jobs at occupational levels from janitorial and maintenance to faculty positions. However, the city council torpedoed this, in large part by council member Regina Romero. It just defies any logic how this once in a life time opportunity was wasted by the (ignorant) elite running this
Today in Texas and the United States, there has been many issues that involve immigration. Many people assume that they are taking the U.S. citizens jobs which is causing many to lose their jobs or the insufficient amount of jobs there are. Or how they don’t belong here, and they should “go back to where they belong.” There are some pros and cons of having immigrants in the state of Texas, and if there is a way to compromise on this subject of if they should be allowed here or not. Also, if the state of Texas should have any play in the immigration policy. After reading the passage “Immigration in Texas” and the arguments both state senators Dan Patrick and Julio Castro were both very persuasive.
The State of Arizona is widely known for its dry western weather, beautiful scenery and cactus plantations spread over wide expanses of rock and desert. This makes for the traditional wild west territory. This picture is painted best in Tucson, a bustling city of 1 million that is set against awe-inspiring mountains. Tucson is Arizona's second largest city after Phoenix and has a rich Mexican-Native American heritage and history stemming from its occupation by native Indians. Many people have traveled through this city since its inception in the 18th century. From French merchants to Anglo-American frontiersmen to Indian tribesmen, Tucson can boast a rich and diverse heritage.
One thousand nine hundred and ten, people authorized the territory of New Mexico to form the constitution and state government. But the country seat was in fairway Mesilla the village that is now present day Las Cruces N.M and the citizens of Tucson began calling for separate territorial status for Arizona almost immediately. In 1888, the New Mexico territorial legislature passed a resolution supporting the creation of an Arizona territory. It would be the land west of north south line about 32 degrees west of
The Immigrants Came to Kansas for a better opportunity. Many went to Welch Town. As they settled in the country, they moved to the west of Mississippi in search of "the land of milk and honey".
I think that they should try to share, however if they can’t I think Arizona should.
What explains the high failure rate of small business startup in the City of Brownsville? There are several influences that contribute to the failure of small business. According to (SBA, 2015) small business provides approximately half or 4.3 million of Texas’s private workforces. In 2010 there was 38,760 small business established in Texas only 68.3 percent of those business remained open two years later. This would indicate that approximately 31.7 percent of those businesses failed and the City of Brownsville is no exception. One major issue is that the City of Brownsville is a disadvantaged economically distressed region. The City sets on the Mexico boarder along the Rio Grande Valley, with a population of 183,887 within their community,
Arizona continues to add jobs at a very fast pace, comparing the 2nd quarter of 2012 to the same quarter in 2013. During the last year, hospitality, leisure, and construction added the most employment with each one increasing by over 10,000 positions (Hammond, 2013). Health services, professional and business services, financial activities, and education are in the top five and represent 85% of job gains. Arizona’s economy is still making very solid economic growth and continues to improve (Hammond, 2013).
Immigrants. What do people think of immigrants? They think many things that can be negative or positive comments though there are factors that influence your opinion on the matter and then there are some pros and cons that go along with it. In San Antonio many people think that ICE (Immigration and Custom Enforcement) has been targeting many immigrants with very old criminal records and convictions for minor infractions, some even without any criminal convection are being rounded up. There are even raids that are part of “targeted enforcement operations” that ICE regularly carries out as routine “check-in” and even sanctuary cities are being target and are not safe anymore.
January 19, 2017 the Oakland Raiders of the National Football League filed for relocation to Las Vegas, Nevada. The Raiders football team has asked the city of Oakland to help fund the construction a new stadium, but the city has not been overly helpful regarding the matter. Therefore, this is what is prompting the team to move to Las Vegas. The team has officially filed for relocation, but has to wait for the results from the vote of all NFL team owners. The team hopes to be settled in Las Vegas by the 2020 season (Belson). The Raiders leaving the city of Oakland, for the city of Las Vegas, will have a negative economic impact on Oakland.
Last April 2010, Arizona signed into law one of the harshest Immigration laws this country has ever known. It requires that individual’s residing in Arizona carry documentation proving their right to be in the country legally. Several of the local police in Tucson and Phoenix disagree with the law saying that it puts enmity between them and the residents, while the courts say it will give them more authority and the tools they need to get offenders off the streets.
When George came home from work he told me that he had some really good news. Now, I don't know if I would call it good news, but he said that our family needs to move to Oregon. At first I was in such shock because Iowa is such a good place for our family, but a change is always good. The government is giving all males over the age of sixteen 640 acres of free farmland. That is more land then we have right now, and the land won’t be as crowded as the land here in Iowa.

Like many U.S. cities, Tucson is also taking great strides in information technology. According to the Milkin Institute, Tucson was ranked the seventh Best Performing City out of 200 Metropolitan Areas (City Data). There are close to 1,200 tech-related companies in the city, employing a near 50,000 people. With IBM being the most familiar name to many, it is important to mention the contributions of Honeywell--a multinational conglomerate company focusing on aerospace technology, home and building technologies, and safety and productivity solutions for businesses. Another notable mention is Texas Instruments Inc., which is famous for its numerous TI scientific calculators. For decades, the main clusters was formed around Raytheon and the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, but the University of Arizona, Pima County, and major international water equipment manufacturers have worked to for the Southwest Water Technology Cluster.
In 2011 on a very cold December night, my dad told me something that I will never forget. My siblings and I were all sitting in my fathers very out dated apartment, eating hamburger helper and watching a movie on his small 32 inch t.v.
There has been many laws and regulations passed, to try and prevent illegal migrants from working in the United States. In all states, businesses “Are required by federal law to check the legal status of all new hires. They must fill out federal form 1-9 to show that each worker holds federally acceptable residency documents, like a driver’s license or social security card” (Speizer 1). Although they must do all of those things, they are not required to check the authenticity of the documents. In Arizona that has all changed, a new law has been passed that makes it mandatory for all employers to participate in E-Verify “in which information from 1-9 documents can be checked through databases at the Social Security Administration or the Department of Homeland Security” (Speizer 2). This used to be something businesses could voluntarily partake in, but has now become mandatory in Arizona. Under this law they have created harsh punishments for employers who knowingly hire undocumented migrants. One of these harsh punishments includes the loss of the employer’s business license, if it is a reoccurring issue. They hope that this new law will decrease the amount of undocumented workers in the state and create more jobs for their own U.S. citizens.
