happens because “raising the minimum wage forces business owners to raise the prices of their goods or services, thereby spurring inflation” ("Does raising the minimum”). Inflation may not occur drastically, however, due to all the money is the economy is will cause the purchasing power of money to drop, and prices to increase. Affecting all of society. The article mentions greatly the details pertaining to why a higher minimum wage could potentially hurt our society. Although it does briefly skim the positives it does not go into great depth. Some of these positives include improving overall living standards, and increasing wage for everyone. Through deep analysis of the positives it could potentially show whether the increase is beneficial to society as a whole. The starting reason as to why a wage raise could potentially be beneficial is it could improve the overall living standards of Americans. Some studies indicate that a raise in salary would be beneficial in that it could raise some of those below the poverty line above it. For example, CBO has said that “a minimum wage hike to $10.10 would raise average family incomes below the poverty line by 2.8 percent and cut the number of people living in poverty by 900,000” (Stone). This raise gives low income families the opportunity to live further away from the edge. It allows them to be able to spend money a little more freely and not have to worry about just getting by. This new-found wealth also allows for the ability
Rex Huppke, a journalist for the Chicago Tribune, deftly discusses the pros and cons of raising the minimum wage in the last of a two-week series in “In the Minimum Wage Debate, Both Sides Make Valid Points”. Although I am for raising the minimum wage, Huppke’s presentation of the opposite argument does make one think beyond the gut reading that everyone deserves more money. Huppke’s argument that a large number of minimum wage earners are student of the elderly leads me to believe that a tier of wages would take care of the issue. For example, anyone working less than 35 hours a week would be paid at a certain rate; with full time getting an increase. I am not concerned by the argument that a higher minimum wage leads to lay-offs or price increases when most products sold in America are manufactured by cheap foreign labor. There is already a huge profit margin that could sustain such an increase. Rather than give discounts on goods and services, thus preventing employees from exercising the right to shop, stay or eat wherever the employee chooses, these employers trap workers into giving back the very money they have “slaved” for.
The topic of raising the minimum wage has many different viewpoints. It is thought to be affected negatively and positively. Some believe it increases unemployment and poverty. Others believe it creates jobs, helps the economy and low-income families by giving them more money to give back to the economy.
Would raising minimum wage benefit our society? Changing minimum wage could potentially hurt the economy. It would be nice to have an increase in pay; However it would only lead to inflation (The act of inflating or the state of being inflated Webster dictionary) with the economy.
Since 1938, when the minimum wage was first introduced (at a rate of $0.25 an hour), the federal minimum wage has increased 22 times. The minimum wage is the salary floor, or the lowest possible rate that employers can pay employees.
Raising minimum wage 10% would reduce the amount of poverty by 2.4% ( Konzal, Mike. ) The raise of minimum wage may be able to pull 4.6 million people out of poverty. Although there are 45 million people in poverty, pulling 4.6 million out is a good start. With raising minimum wage there are possibilities of it boosting workers incomes by 10% which is an increase of $1,700. A raise like this is a big boost to people's quality of life and living conditions. Having high paying jobs for workers would pull about 900,000 americans out of poverty and raise the income of 16.5 million workers all around the US. While raising minimum wage has some positive outcomes there is more possibility for negative outcome. Positive effects like poverty rates possibly dropping are great but not enough money can be made. Workers income will be raised because of the wage raise but it is not good enough. If firms pay more they are going to look for less workers because of the raise or resort to other ways of work. A raise in minimum wage has opportunities to pull people out of poverty and raise incomes of people but it is not 't enough. ( Khimm, Suzy. )
Many argue that raising the minimum wage makes hiring workers more expensive, eliminates jobs at the bottom, slows growth and ultimately raises unemployment. Economic studies show that raising the minimum wage to keep pace with inflation creates little additional harm, but what the president is
Although raising the Minimum wage had a positive effect on the economy in 2009, it will not be beneficial during this time period, because it will have a negative impact on businesses, and in the end will not give justice to working Americans like they think it will.
It seems only logical that providing the poorest segment of society with more pay for their work will improve their situation and give them the working capital they need to work their way out of poverty. With each incremental increase those who are directly affected by the increase will instantly have more money to help them purchase more good and services to improve their living conditions. Additionally increasing the minimum wage would likely have a positive effect on the overall economy as workers immediately increase their consumption possibly increasing GDP and the resulting employment
A wage increase in our country would do a world of good rather than harm. This country is in dire need of a wage increase but just because it needs one doesn’t mean people shouldn’t read in between the lines and how it will be helpful. Minimum wage was always the status quo in this country there was a time where it didn’t exist. With time however, it established itself into our modern day society. Because of the growth of the country the minimum wage was left untouched forgetting what it was made to do in the first place. There are some negatives pertaining to raising the wage, some fictional others factual. Before, it was raised to compliment the normal amount money required for the standard of living for Americans. However, it never raised
Since 2009, the federal minimum wage rate for employees has been $7.25 per hour. In retrospect, this is hardly enough pay to take care of one’s self-- let alone a family with children. If a person were to add up the average cost of living for one week and then compare it to the average amount of money earned in minimum wage for that week, it would be apparent that there is little to no extra money for emergency situations. Increasing the minimum wage has been a major controversial issue; Democrats are proponents of raising the minimum wage, however, Republicans are trying to stop the movement. Many economists have discussed how raising the minimum wage could benefit millions of people and businesses, yet Republicans still hinder the
There’s a very simple solution to a increasing poverty level, a raise in the federal minimum wage. People who live at or below poverty level did not have the opportunity to develop job skills, build an education, or invest in financial assets. The little opportunity given to the low poverty populate is due to the absence of a low income, and how many of them could only afford a minimum wage job. If an increase of minimum wage was given, many low income workers could develop skills, that could help them progress in their career. Once these workers succeed in their career, one could hope that they will go on a earn a education, or build their financial assets. These financial assets include loans, savings accounts, and the purchasing of houses or other expensive items. An investment of these financial assets will led to an overall boost in the surrounding economy and crime rates in the area. A federal wage increase has many benefits compared to cons, these benefits include: helping the life of low income workers, who make up most of America, and the overall boost of the economy and the area surrounding it.
One of the most obvious and anticipated effects of a minimum wage increase is the income increase especially for families on and below the poverty line. An approximated 16.5 million people stand to gain from added wages, and most families ' incomes would, in fact, rise above the federal poverty threshold (Congressional Budget Office). With so many families depending on the minimum wage to forge a livelihood, an increase would be a blessing in disguise. It is a fact that some American families have parents working up to two or three jobs to keep up with the cost of living which is dynamic in nature. As such, children grow up with absentee parents and lacking the attention they need to enhance their psychological well-being. Increasing the minimum wage is likely to ease the pressure from such families and encourage more cohesive family units.
I believe that raising the minimum wage would cause a lot of problems in many aspects. One way would be the cost when it comes to having to eat out, even with your family or friends. Take for instance if I went to a fast food restaurant and spent fifteen dollars for a family of three and the minimum wage was increased. The company would then want to consider raising the cost of food prices. This in turn would possibly cost in the long run upwards of twenty-five dollars depending on what you order to go out to eat. That is almost double than what you might have used to pay. Now, I am sure if you live in a bigger city where consumer goods are already expensive you may pay a little more for food when you are out. Also, take in consideration of large tourist towns how much you might spend there. However, from there people would want to stop eating out at restaurants. In turn, businesses would take a major loss, especially small locally owned ones. On the other side of things, instead of businesses wanting to be able to hire two people they may only consider hiring one. If you think of it that way it might off set their cost, but then it would also force minimum wage workers to
Moving along the list of advantages, increasing the minimum wage will also increase the amount of money workers have, which, in turn, will inspire them to increase their consumption and pump their extra money into the economy. If workers have more money going into their pockets from increased wages, the income effect comes into play, and provides an incentive to go out into the market and buy goods and services. In an article printed by The New York Times, it was also pointed out that raising the minimum wage would decrease labor turnover. This is because if workers are paid more, they have less incentive to leave their current job and seek a higher paying job.
The minimum wage is the lowest possible wage that employers can legally pay their workers. Today, it seems like everyone has their own opinion on the minimum wage. Should it be abolished, raised, or should it remain the same? I will talk about the pros and the cons of raising the minimum wage as well as my own opinion if it should be raised or if it should stay the same.
