We seem to live in a world where nothing is private anymore. Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, or any other form of social media, most of us are sharing our life’s adventures on the internet. While it’s a great tool to use to keep up with friends or stay up to date with what’s in the news, social media is also something that can get someone in big trouble. And for those who are police officers, social media is something that can not only get you in trouble in your personal life, but can get you fired. Like anything else in life, social media has its pros and cons. And that thin line between appropriate and inappropriate is one that can very easily be crossed. The city of chandler, my department, is a big fan of social media. They are constantly posting on Facebook about the positive impact officers are making as well as new community events planned for the month. However, they’re very concerned about officers conduct when it comes to personal social media accounts. According to chandler police department social media policy (social media policy, 2017), it’s crucial that employees know the consequences of posting inappropriate things on social media. What officers post on social media is not only damaging to their reputation, but the reputation and integrity of the department as well (Chandler police department social media policy, 2017).
