According to ESPN graphs, 34% of girls say that sports are a big part of who they are, and 61% of boys all ages say that sports are a part of who they are. I think that if it weren't for sports, I would not be the person that I am today. Some people think that it is a good idea for youth to be involved in competitive sports, while others think that they don’t want kids doing competitive sports. This is an argument that has been going on for many years. People may focus on the aspects of the injuries, cost, and pressure, the other side of the argument see that kids learn numerous life lessons, stay healthy, and make new friends. I think that kids have the opportunity to learn many life skills through competitive sports. Those life skills can help you in the future and in education, mental health, and it can prevent various diseases including obesity. Sports can teach kids life lessons for the future and through education. According to the website Edutopia (2017), there is a connection between physical activity and academic performance. “Studies have shown a direct correlation between physical activity and academic performance. A University of Kansas study looking at the performance of students in grades 9 to 12 showed that more than 97% of student-athletes graduated high school, 10% higher than those students who had never participated in sports. Athletes were also shown to have better G.P.A. outcomes than non-athletes.” They say that it may be because physical activity
A point of disagreement among the people whose youth play in competitive sports, is that some think they are too dangerous because the youth can get many injuries that can change their life forever. But on the other hand people think that it is a way to learn life skills and have great confidence, because they will need to know those simple key skills when they are out in the real world and have a job. Research shows, however, that competitive sports are good for youth because the children are meeting new people and they are building up their self-esteem.
To many educational institutions, it is controversial whether or not sports are beneficial to scholastic success. Offering athletic programs is said to supply students with an enhanced learning experience, as well as adding amusement to a rather dull school year. Therefore, sports should be provided in all schools to reduce stress, improve academic performance, and develop teamwork skills and equal opportunity in school.
“Sports teaches you character, it teaches you to play by the rules, it teaches you to know what it feels like to win and lose-it teaches you about life.”(Billie Jean King) Most students from first grade to twelfth grade say that sports are a big part of their life and make them who they were meant to be in a positive way. Some people might argue that students in sports or extracurricular activities have lower grades than the other students, but it's the opposite way around. Sports improve your performance in school because they strengthen your concentration ability and leadership traits.
For example school work and grades. In the video called “How much is too much,” by KCRA It states that sports and help kids with keeping grades up. The buissiere your schedule was the easier it was to prioritize what needed to get done. Altho sports could help with grades at could also make them decrease. In an article called “ Are High School Sports God For Kids,” It says that winning a competition for the sport they're playing can stress them out and only keep their mind on winning. When playing the sport and being under the pressure of wanting to win could change the importance of education to the kid. The kid could then not get good grade and affect if they get into college.
Also sports help kids with their grades.” According to a 2013 evaluation conducted by the Crime Lab at the University of Chicago, Becoming a Man--Sports Edition creates lasting improvements in the boys’ study habits and grade point averages. “ (“ Bowen & Hitt”). Sports are the number one reason for a kid who is thinking about dropping out to stay in school. Think about it if you need a 2.0 to stay in sports and you struggle in school but, you love sports and want to do it in college you will stay in school to achieve your dream. Also with sports that helps me is you don’t get time to procrastinate because if I know I have a game tomorrow and I have a big essay do the day after that I will do it tonight because I know I can’t do it after the game. Which is why most people who aren’t in sports struggle with procrastine. “Neish (1993) that found positive correlations between high, medium, or low levels of involvement in extracurricular activities and students’ GPAs and involved students attained higher GPAs than did students who were not involved.”(“ Lumpkin & Favor”). This proves again that sports truly do help are kids in school.
Children playing competitive sports is hotly contested because people think that they should not participate. People think that competitive sports can help kids burn calories and lose weight, improve their grades, and help them make friends. Others argue that sports can injure children, bring their self esteem down, and it costs a lot of money. I believe that kids should not participate in competitive sports because of those reasons. First of all, kids can get seriously injured when playing competitive sports.
There is no “review of literature” section in this study. However, in the “Introduction,” the authors discuss some of the background knowledge for the study. They mention how previous research done in Texas has shown that, on average, fitter students score higher on Texas state assessments. The authors also discuss that, based on previous research, athletes are more likely to be fit because they engage in physical activity for more hours during the week than non athletes. The authors include additional background information explaining that although participation in athletics has not been shown to increase intelligence scores, previous research has shown that there is a correlation between athletic participation and higher academic performance. However, the authors believe that there have been limitations in such studies, such as small sample sizes with lack of ethnic diversity. Therefore, they conducted their research study to address some of those
Some people think that competitive sports are horrible, but others realize how many benefits come from competitive sports. Research shows however, that there are many mental, social, and health benefits for playing sports. Children get close with a group of people how share the same interest. They also learn how to deal with failure, preparing them for the future. Finally they get good exercise from practices and the games.
Do you have a passion, something you love to do more than anything? Imagine people trying to stop you from doing what you love because they think it’s not useful or a waste. Some people say competitive sports cost too much and they are way too dangerous for young kids to participate in. However, for many youth, competitive sports play a positive role. When kids play competitive sports, they are happier and they learn how to be healthy. Also, they learn life lessons that they will need for the future.
Sports can be beneficial in many ways.Higher grade expectations and attainment(source 1A) greater connections with school that is greater attachment and support from adults(source 1b),greater personal confidence and self esteem, more academically oriented friends,(source 1c),more restraint avoiding risky behavior(source 1d
Imagine a world where anyone who played any sport and worked very hard, just got the same trophy as everyone else. That trophy has one purpose: to show you participated. There would be no point in trying your best and working your hardest if you never got recognized for the work you actually put into what you just did. You would never get recognized or acknowledged for some of your greatest achievements. Even though some people believe that competitive sports are unnecessary for kids, competitive sports are healthy for kids and teens, they provide a safe and beneficial place for the athletes participating, and it teaches the children/teens valuable life lessons. Therefore, competitive sports are helpful and beneficial.
First competitive sports are good is it builds character in kids are, sometimes you can only learn certain things from sports like what hard work is. According to the (National Council of Youth Sports) they say there are over 40 million kids are in competitive sports and that helps because when we grow up there will be a variety of adults with different lessons that they have learned and that will help when we are adults because there will be a variety of people from different childhood lessons. Also being in competitive sports, kids have less negative behavior in school and in public because they are the names behind their program and I have never met a sports player that said I want people to think are sports program is a bunch a bad kids. They also make life lasting friendships with other kids that they played or are on the same team. I know this because my dad talks to a friend that he made from playing baseball and football.
Sports and the general physical activities have been associated with a plethora of benefits. Not so much in correlation with education though. The debate on sports and academic performance relates as to whether sports affect academic performance positively or negatively. Mostly, academics, especially in high school and colleges, require an enormous time commitment. In the same way, sports demand time commitment. Apparently, academics and sports run linearly and either would consume the time of the other. Such would be the argument put forth by the claimants of the negative effects of sports on academic performance. The opponents to the positive correlation of sports and academic performance ground their arguments largely on the time commitment that the two require claiming that sports would consume a student’s time for study hence affecting their academic performance. Proponents of a positive correlation between sports and academic performance summon an extensive range of evidence showing that students who participate in sports perform well in academics. The proponents’ arguments are fetched from the proven benefits of exercise which improve a student’s overall well-being and motivate their academic performance. Opponents would, however, argue that the studies that find athletes and sports persons good at academics do not show how such correlations occur in that other factors could be the actual causes of the correlation and not sports in themselves. Regardless, opponents to the claim that sports affect academic performance positively cannot deny that sports affect the overall well being of any human being. As such, there is no denying that sports affect academic performance positively where a balance among the two is maintained.
Sports programs have been an integral part of all schools. They support the academics of the school and therefore foster success in life. These programs are educational and help produce productive citizenship. They help students experience and build skills that may help them in their future, like interpersonal and time management skills. Education may kindle the light of knowledge, but sports help to maintain the proper physique. Sports are also an important means of entertainment and a use for energy after long hours of study. Sports increase a student’s performance not only in the classroom but also in their life.
Anyone who plays sports knows that occasionally students can’t focus on their grades with sports in the way of their academics. According to an article by Amanda Ripley, “sports do have many benefits providing exercise lessons in perseverance and just plain fun but the emphasis has gone too far”(10).
