We live in a world surrounded by hate, discrimination, bullying, suicide, and unrealistic expectations. I am not saying these things did not exist in previous years, but they have manifested into a monster that cannot be stopped. Everywhere you go you can probably count on one hand how many people you see not on their phones. The issues I stated are mainly related to the internet, television, and social media. There are more cons about the internet, TV, and social media than there are pros. Some cons are delayed child development, long-term mental disorders, cyberbullying, and suicide, while pros are easy to access to articles and news, communicating, the convenience of having the world at your fingertips. With privileges provided by internet, social media, and TV comes responsibility, and many people don’t understand the consequences of one harsh comment, hours of watching TV, and reading false facts on the internet. Limiting screen time would drastically change the mental and physical effects on humans.
The first major social media surge was in the early 2000’s. MySpace set the foundation for the media-controlled world that we live in today. Facebook and Twitter began around the year 2005. Today there are over one billion people on Facebook and 330 million active users on Twitter. It is estimated that 81% of the world’s population has social media; that is approximately two billion people more worried about their phones than about what is happening around them. Children
People do not realize the immense impact social media has on their lives. Social media first impacted people’s lives with the invention of the telephone in 1890. Following this, the radio entered many homes in 1891; this was the beginning of social media. During the twentieth century, computers and the Internet began the modern rise of today’s social media. UseNet, in 1979 was a virtual newsletter, which began what people think today of as modern social media. When home computers became popular during the 1980s, such sites as relay chats took off. Then, in 1997, the first true social media site , Six Degrees, came about: “It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that’s still popular today” ( “Complete History of Social Media: Than and Now”). Although social media has some positive effects, social media has changed the world for the worse because it negatively affects politics, privacy, and bullying.
Social Media began affecting our communication and relationships as early as 1969 when the first internet service provider become available to U.S. universities. In 2002, Friendster, the first social media website available to the U.S. was created and gained over 3 million members in just over 3 months. One year later, MySpace launched. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg, a 24-year-old Harvard student, created Facebook, an online social networking service. This service was originally a way for students to interact. It wasn’t until February of 2004 when Facebook was created by Mark Zuckerberg. When Facebook first came out it was an instant hit. Another social media that is trending is Twitter, which was created in March of 2006. Twitter did not become as big of a hit as Facebook in the beginning because Facebook was still the highest used social media in the world at the same time Twitter came out. In the book by Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point, it helps shows how twitter and social media is more of a connector than a maven or salesperson. Without the use of social such

This social networking site also allowed users to send messages and post information on a bulletin. The bulletin would help the users find common interest with each other.
