We currently live in a society where certain factors seem to affect our role as a member of society. As we know, women are mostly always treated differently just because of their gender. That is a main one that can truly affect them when they are trying to get a job or when they are getting payed. We might have some disadvantages, but there are certain times where we might have more privilege than we thought. Analyzing the Matrix of Domination, there are things like race, class and age that can affect us or benefit us depending on where we live. A lot of times people don’t take small factors into consideration, but those little things can make a big deal. This society is too quick to make judgement, which can have long term effects in the long run, as we have seen. As I stated, women in society are seen as less than men in this society. Through society we have seen that too many times women are paid a lot less, although they might have a higher education than their male peers. Women might just be seen as less capable of doing certain things. That only leads to having to do the domestic work and not the hard and tough work. So far I’ve only had two jobs, but I can gladly say that I haven’t been discriminated because of my gender. I worked at the movie theaters and they would always treat me the same as my male co-workers. They would always tell me how hard of a worker I am. In my other job, my bosses are women, so they never treated me any different since we were easily
Men were the only people for many years to have jobs to maintain the family. I believe because women were so late in gaining equal rights they, till this day they are underpaid. It is unfair that both sexes can have the same qualifications and job and yet women still fall short in salary pay. Even when it comes to promotions bosses tend to choose men because it gives their company a better imagine, a more “manly” image. A man in front of a company is said to show more strength and business knowledge rather than a women. People tend to be somewhat skeptical of what a women is capable of handling in their jobs as well as in a everyday life situation. Women aren’t as involved in meetings are given any challenging tasks because women are seen as incapable to handle it. During the hiring process there tends an abundance of discrimination. Women are typically chosen for women-based jobs like cleaning or nursing. Men are typically chosen for manly jobs like business and construction. Women able to to the same jobs so it’s not like they don’t try, they just aren’t very likely in getting the job. When it comes to the hiring process sexism tends to be programmed into people 's brains.
Gender can happen in the real world which can lead to personal experiences. I have experienced some gender inequality throughout my life and have had family situations since I have been alive. For instance, my parents lived in a time where men went to work and the women had to clean, cook, and stuff around the house. I have experienced some problems myself by my brother and I having to do outside yard work while my sister only does inside work. She claims that yard work is “for men and it’s a man 's job.”. What I have to say about that is that men and women don 't need to do work based off if it is a man or woman’s job, work is work and you shouldn’t base it off gender inequality. Another situation I was faced with was when my mom was trying to get a job, she was trying to get a job at selling Tupperware. She was faced with “you can’t sell Tupperware because you are a woman and people don 't buy stuff off of women.”. She sticked with her gut and went for it, now she is very successful in her business and doesn’t let what a guy said to her stop her.
Women have been discriminated against throughout the history of the United States. Women were typically associated with being “mothers” and having to take care of the children along with other so called home “duties.” They were not allowed to vote until fairly recently. Astonishingly, women in the United States were not allowed to have their own bank account before 1974. There is no reasonable excuse for such restrictions, except to keep women under the control of men. Altogether, the United States’ has a history of discriminating against women. Women have historically been treated as second class citizens, especially in the workplace, which kept them from doing certain jobs that were meant for men. The reality is that women have proven more than capable of doing labor intensive work. World War II proved that women were more than capable of replacing men. Women’s rights in the United States have definitely been improved, but they continue to be discriminated against in the workplace.
Throughout history there has always been an enormous obstacle for women to overcome in the workplace. Occupational Segregation has continuously acted as a force that impedes on the daily lives of female workers across the world. It not only eliminates several chances for women to capitalize on opportunistic events, but has also denied them of the basic civil rights they are entitled to. Jobs ranging from the military, sports, and even the corporate world have long been dominated by an aura of masculine characteristics. Why is our society structured in such an uncivilized way? Some women may not possess the "supposed" masculine attributes that are sought for in numerous industries, but in all honestly just as many men fail to meet those
Men get paid more than females do. Men get promotions more than females do. In the work place women get sexual harassed by their employee. Women who had less education also received less pay. Females have a harder time on trying a CEO position and are challenged when they do earn the position by the male workers. If a male who has graduated college work he will make over 91,000 dollars but if a women who has graduated college works in the same position she would make around 60,000 dollars. So, we don't get paid the same amount even if we do work just as hard as the men
Women have been victim of gender discrimination for centuries, and this fact remains increasingly pertinent still today. In U.S. history we have seen that much of the heavy lifting or more important jobs have always been taken by men, and front desk jobs like receptionists and secretaries have been considered primarily jobs fit for a female. This has stemmed from a long history of being in a culture where the men are the bread winners. The man of the house has always been considered the one who has the responsibility of bringing home the money and supporting the family and the woman raises the kids and does household duties. Although, this was less true for women who were widowed or separated or whose husbands had a job that brought in inadequate
My interviewees also daily experience inequality based on what kind of gender they are, this is called gender segregation. For example, my female interviewees explained how they try to work on the same work that a male does, but the employers don't hire them, and pay females differently. Some said that males do not always take female's opinion seriously, and ignore them. Especially, people think they are weak and don't know nothing. It is very hard to be a female, as one of interviewees explained they receive sexual harassment at work and school. In addition, one of interviewees was job hunting. She found a place where they were hiring. They ended up telling her that they only hire males and to look somewhere else. As for males they receive better jobs and incomes than females. But then again as one of my interviewees said that because he is a man, it is expected to be strong and handle everything that comes in his way. This also relates to gender discrimination and it also to class stratification. For instance, Adalberto Aguirre stated, “Males and females within an ethnic subpopulation do not receive the same levels of income. In general, women earn less than men—a fact that is accounted for by their distribution in different kinds of occupations. Men are overrepresented in higher-paying jobs, but there is considerable difference among ethnic subpopulations.” Females are just seen more inferior than males. Even if you come from an ethnic group, males will still have trouble with income, but not as much as females do. Even though the males earn more income than females, they will still struggle, financially. They are from an ethnic group, they look different, and have different skin color, therefore race really impacts someone in the
Women have virtually the same rights as men. However, the fault needing to be recognized in today’s society is the way that women are treated. Even in simple areas, such as jobs, women are put on the back burner. A woman is able to become a CEO of a company, nonetheless, she will struggle twice as hard as a man would. Even as an employee, women are statistically paid less than men are.
Gender stereotypes still exist as Catherine Hill stated earlier in this paper. Statistics show that today 45% of women are enrolled in college compared to 38% of men. 36% of women have bachelors degrees compared to 28% of men (time.com). According to Francine D. Blau and Lawrence M. Kahn (2007 pg. 845) the authors of The Gender Pay Gap, women get paid less because they have over all less experience in the work force. Men have been in the work force from the beginning and women just joined during WWII. Another reason they say is because women also do housework, the more housework they do, the less time they have to spend at their job or doing their job. Also because women are anticipated to have a shorter work life, meaning they will not stay working as long as a male would or stay at the same job for as long as a male would.
There are many issues revolving around gender in this country. Despite many efforts for gender equality, such as the proposed Equal Rights Amendment which fell three states short during ratification, gender inequality is still rampant. In a perfect world, everyone should be treated equally throughout society, not just at work, or any other policy-designated sphere, and should not be discriminated against because of their gender. Unfortunately, we are living in a far from perfect world were these idealistic views fall short. From the economic sphere, to basic
Sexism has been prevalent in our society for generations. It has plagued the views and outlooks on gender, and has molded the populace’s minds to favor one over the other. Engrained within society is the strict framework of binary gender roles, and placing males and females into distinct and rigid categories that they can rarely break free from. While progress has been made with regards to weakening these rigid and unfair gender roles, the prejudice views that run rampant through the minds of the older generations, and into the up-and-coming ones, are difficult to combat. Women are often overlooked and regarded as the inferior gender, and they are often portrayed as individuals who are at men’s every beck and call. This is highlighted through the observations of Paula Rothenberg in her novel Invisible Privilege, she discusses her observations and dealings first hand with prejudice of all kinds. The book recalls her experiences from the mid to late 20th century, which was a time of more blatant sexism, but I will be using other sources in addition to prove that sexism is still a prevalent issue in everyday life. The sources I will pull from in addition to the novel include, “Different but Equal? Inequalities in the workplace, the Nature Based Narrative, and the Title VII prohibition on the Masculinization of the ‘Ideal Workers,’” an academic article by Kristin Housh, which uses statistical information to argue that women are treated differently in the workplace. Secondly, “Gender Bias in Education,” an op-ed by Amanda Chapman, which discusses unequal treatment of women in education, in addition to a visual and song lyrics that also support these arguments. Sexism and unequal treatment of women in the workplace and education is still a problem in society today that needs to be changed.
Women in general have been discriminated by men that don’t believe in the power of women. Over the course of time, some men discriminate women by particular things that make them men are superior then women. Women are strong not only physically but emotionally and mentally, but some men don’t seem to notice yet. There are people that think men and women aren’t in the same level, and they don’t give women the opportunity to show it. Throughout years in America people have found evidences that there is a wage gap between two genders. Women deserve to be equally paid just as men are being paid. Both genders work the same amount of hours, but have different pay checks; this is unfair because women shouldn’t be paid less just for being a woman. This is an act of discrimination for both genders from society.
Gender discrimination is not something that we can see in our home but also when we look into our society, we can see many types of discrimination. It can be in school, workplace, bus or even in train. The main problem with our society is that people consider women as powerless or someone to be in home to look after the kids. People think that some works can be done by only men so they just hire male workers by thinking that female workers can't do heavy works. Also, there will be unequal wages between male and female workers by just looking into their gender. Sometimes men get higher wages because the boss think that males are the one who take care of the family. In some cases, if woman is pregnant, some employers do not even like to interview or hire them just because they are pregnant. So, in most cases, women have to hide their pregnancy because of the fire they get fired. These kinds of gender discrimination
From the beginning of time the male and female have been expected to perform certain roles in society. Males have been expected to work and provide for their family while the female raises the children, cooks, cleans and keeps the house in order. Today many women have broken that tradition and are starting their careers and becoming more independent. Even though females today are braking away from that stereotype, they are being discriminated in the work place because there are still individuals out there that believe that women should play a certain role and that they are not strong enough to work in a cooperation or
The Commercial Revolution began in Italy because the starting area was near Ancient Rome civilizations and the center of trade with other regions, so information was quick firing from all directions. People used literature to learn like the Book of the Courtier which explained a modern noble.
