Antigone is a Greek tragedy which presents questions of what one should do when presented with the dilemma of behaving according to one’s morality and values or behaving according to the law. There is no absolute good nor absolute bad, instead, the world is composed of a complex combination of both. Ergo, Antigone’s rebellion against the law cannot be classified in either of these extremes. However, she weighted the advantages and disadvantages of her planned action and smartly selected what was of greater value for her. Although the law should be obeyed to maintain order and security, sometimes it should also be questioned and broken. The people give power to a ruler in exchange for protection. The law is one of the means used by the ruler to enforce security. However, if the people start breaking the law, it may signify that the law has failed. From this perspective, it is understandable that Antigone, when she felt her peace of mind attacked by Creon’s law, opposed it. “Only if I had let my mother’s son lie there unburied, then I could not have borne it.” (139) Antigone’s speech shows how Creon’s law threatened her mental security. A ruler should be wise and rule in a way that does not lead the people into madness, this meaning that he should observe that the basic needs of the people are met and no strong beliefs are harmed. Because when one’s beliefs, mostly being one’s religious beliefs, are contradicted by the state it may lead to acts of madness. Antigone felt directly insulted by Creon’s law, as she said to Ismene “The noble Creon! It is against you and me he has made this order. This were the absolute obedience and fear of the sovereign, her place in society as a woman and the continuous disgracing on her family because of their past. By her actions, she not only wanted to pay honor to her brother, but also to show society that she, her family, and women had strength and deserve respect. There was no better way to do it than to show bravery and give one’s life for one’s values. Because a life is a human’s greatest treasure, one who gives it cannot be considered selfish and because of this one attains the admiration of the people. Antigone died admired by the people, and she only accomplished this because she did not rebel against a natural law. She did not kill or cause any other type of harm.
