The Benefits and the Possible Disadvantages of Lean Production Methods Being Utilised by an Aircraft Manufacturer Lean production is the term given to a range of measures traditionally used by Japanese businesses in an attempt to reduce waste and costs in production. It is aimed at the elimination of waste in every area of production. Its goal is to incorporate less human effort, less time to develop products, less space and to become highly responsive to customer demand while producing top quality products in the most efficient and economical manner possible. Another advantage to using Kaizen is the motivation it would give to employees as it involves both job enrichment and empowerment. Also if the frequent and small changes mean that employees would not resist from change as they are use to them within their working environment. One example of an aircraft manufacturer who has found the Kaizen method successful is Barnes Aerospace Ogden Division. This company is a build-to-print manufacturer of aircraft components. It used the Kaizen method to improve profitability by reducing operating costs and increasing sales. This method of lean production proved extremely successful for the manufacturer as it Space savings from 169,000 ft2 to 56,000 ft2, improved productivity by 24% and increased sales. Kaizen is both a popular and successful lean production technique but it does have its disadvantages. Firstly, it is not suitable for every type of business. Additionally it takes power away from management because sub-ordinates are given empowerment and over time the 'continuous improvement' method may be forgotten by employees. Just-in-time, also called JIT, is another method that could be utilised by an aircraft manufacturer.
