The demand that this question has put before me is to analyze psychological complexities of Herbert, protagonist of the story “The Kite” written by W. Somerset Maugham. In order to focus on this element, my argument will dilate upon events and factors that shaped what Lacan had called “I-ness”. This story revolves around a family consisting of husband, wife and a son Herbert. Mrs. Sunbury, Herbert’s mother, had always controlled her son and when he fell in love with Betty, she played very thriftily to take her son back.
